say you had a bunch of pages from a book and you needed to put them in order. that's all they really mean by "sorting".

if you had to do it by hand, there's a number of ways that you could keep track of the pages you're sorting. likewise,there's a number of ways that a computer program can keep track of what it's doing when it's sorting.

that's all that this is showing, really. bigger bars means bigger numbers, and usually, some ways of sorting are faster than others.
