Someone, a coach or a more experienced fencer, should have corrected your en garde before he let you begin. It's pointless entering a bout with poor technique, even for fun, as it will just form bad habits.
what i think that someone should only move on from foil to sabre once there is a certain level of foil mastery. my ambition is for sabre and it has been over a year and im still not allowed to touch a sabre. there are so many applications of foil that are transferrable to sabre from foil i think that everyone should have a solid base in it
who taught you your engard position? cause if it was an instructor im sorry but he was not good. it looks like your preping in the begining and the person your fencing is quite slow. you should have taken over. the hand behind your back..ehh i dont like doing that it adds pressure and for me it makes me lose balance. for sabre i grab my body cord in the back cause my arm is still loose and since my arm is in an awkward position to hit the quart is obvious and i can parry easily.
My advice is to take this sport seriously and not piss about during training. This kind of attitude is an insult. Sort out your ridiculous garde position, hold your weapon properly, stop mucking around. Seriously.
I do take the sport seriously, and believe me I wasn't 'pissing around during taining'. This was during the first couple of weeks I was fencing...and I wasn't 'mucking aroung' I have worked on my engarde and it has much improved...I just thought it would be fun to record some video's of me starting out so I could then better see where and how improvements could be made.
you should go back to foil. all fencers should spend at least one year on foil to get the basics down. after that you can change if you want. you're fencing club seems shady...
Thanks for the tips everyone! As for historical fencing who knows maybe I will get the chance to give that a try someday. I will for sure enjoy the fencing :)
Really, it isn't necessary to pile on negative criticism. Everyone starts somewhere, and elitism is completely uncalled for. We want to promote fencing and encourage people to try it, to practice it, and become great fencers. Even if people only do it for fun, it's still a great sport to enjoy and get some exercise in the process.
Shannon, keep fencing. With practice, determination and hard work, you will become a fine fencer.
HI sharon, try historical fencing with a smallsword or real sabre its more fun(Ithink!!) fighting to the original tratises. However, enjoy the sport what ever you do. Cheers!!
Go back to foil. if you fence at all it looks like you're someone's girlfriend and wanted to try what your boyfriend does...and he's not that good a fencer either.
I've only fenced sabre a handful of times I could probably count them on the one hand. I didn't join fencing because of a guy I joined to have fun and meet people and try something new. Which I did so I may not be the greatest fencer but I am having fun and I originally uploaded these for the others in my beginner class to see too so we could learn from our mistakes.
also, to me it seems that ur back leg (left leg) is starting out too much to the right. your heels should retain the right angle from 1st position and just step out into enguard position.
I am not too sure...all I know is that this is only my second semester fencing and only about the 4th time using the sabre and well are terminology is still a work in progress; but as long as we are understanding the action that is taking place then we are improving. But I have to say what you put does sound familiar as in something the instructors in the class say but it is the students in the class that were judging.

I really hope this was like her first or second week in the club. Cause if she has been fencing for a while, this is really bad.
But assuming you just started, keep up the good work and fix your gaurd.

Working on the basics, especially footwork & a "lightning-like" or "snake strike-like" lunge, would help quite a bit here.
Don't be discouraged by anyone though. ALL fencers must start from have 0 knowledge, and working up from there.

"Attack block hit" = some directing skills, and the girls stance is incorrect, not that it matters.

I'm with jayx, I fenced foil nonstop (3 nights a week) for about 2 months and then switched to sabre now. I've also done pretty well in sabre.

WORST En Garde I have ever seen.. her guard and elbow are way out of angle.

That it is...at least that's what I have been told several times...but it has improved.

Thanks for the tip...I did get told that and have since kept and eye out to catch myself and fix it :)

Hey don't know if you still want advice but:
1. Your engarde is odd you need to bring the blade arm down and angle the blade so it points towards your opponent
2. When advancing you're dragging your back foot (I do it too) it means that you won't get the right of way as any advance will not be a smooth
3. Back leg position (as t4l2l2z4n said)
4. Hold your body more upright! You lean forward too much, someone will just keep bopping you on the top of the mask!
Otherwise, pretty good

You're holding the sabre with the gaurd to the right, instead of more centered... That's just begging for an elbow touch.

"Attack, block, and then hit"
Do you mean "attack, parry, riposte arrives"?
