id give almost anything to make a film like this...if i were an actor, id want to make movies like this. Instead of the mindless garbage thats put out today.
@kagetora7tsukiyo I know what it means and I'm neither Japanese or of Samurai blood. It means to chose a path that is morally sound, to put the needs of others above your own and to take full responsibility for any wrongdoings you may have committed.
At least, that's how I look at it. A pity that some of today's generation is so wound up in their IPads, fashion gossip and snide behavior to follow such ethics.
Not me though, Bushido has helped guide my life well
Some people today always try to convince me that guys like the Samurai weren't as virtuous as we've seen them in TV and movies. While I think that it may be somewhat true, history has mainly remembered the Samurai for their skill and dedication.
Furthermore, they are remembered for using said skill and dedication to defend their land and their people. When you hear of people who courageously defending others, in spite of their reasons; you can't help but call them heroes
Those people always thinking How to die...and still now. Important things how to live own life without any longer!! young kamikaze solders wrote that's for memory of next generation his die....
Japanese culture, the old culture ..is the best in the world........great love india...LOVE SHINTOISM.....i love it. japanese people pz don't change to islam or cristianity or any abrahamic religion. WE have ASIAN religions that is the best and our spiritiuality can be experienced not just read in books.
@shubroto81 Yeah, the reason why Asian country's have work forces with such amazing work ethics is their base in Confucian, Legalist, and Shinto/Bushido philosophy. Respect for your ancestor, devotion to your craft, organization/efficiency, pursuit of honor...all of these are common virtues in the Asian philosophy. China is crushing the US in every sector not because of their pop., its because their people have the correct mindset. Although, eventually they will westernize and crumble
In my opinion, The Last Samurai was one of the best movies to present the truth of Zen and martial arts as well as Japanese culture and Bushido or Budo. Great movie, is it historical?
@XiaoLinLong Somewhat historical. Katsumoto portrays Saigo Takamori the considered "Last Samurai". There was never an American who came over to Japan to witness all of this. There was a a battle that took place called the "Battle of Shiroyama" in history where the Satsuma Rebellion fought to the last samurai against the Imperial Japanese Army. The Last Samurai does a brilliant job in showing the ideals of the Samurai and is a perfect representation in my opinion.
@TyphorT38 brother, let me tall you, being an atheist does not mean you cannot be spiritual. I am an atheist, and all that means is we do not believe or subscribe to religion; not believing in anything has nothing to do with atheism, though some will try to define your beliefs for you. That is Nihilism (sp?). Anyone with any intellect can at least admit the possibility of a 'God'-like being existing. Doesn't mean it's jesus, or whoever. But, how could we mortals know/not know such a thing?
@LamonicBomb i can admit the possibility of a "God"-like being/ or a being that by our humans standards are like a "God". But i do not believe in spirituality and the supernatural. my philosofy is that there are no Supernatural things, only sience that we don't understand jet.
@TyphorT38 Well...not to start an argument, because you ARE entitled to your opinion and I do respect that. But you just contradicted yourself. If you believe in the possibility of a God-like being, then you do adhere, somewhat, to spirituality, insofar as that one God-like being. And, if there can be one, there can be many such beings. Like us humans. If I exist; maybe you do, too? Also, since you don't believe in anything of the spiritual nature, I ask, and not in anger, What is Life?
@LamonicBomb Yes there might be multiple God-like beings, but i don't believe them to be "God" by the human definition. they would simply be aliens that are far superior to humans.
@TyphorT38 And, why are we alive when, per the mandates of science, we're all composed of the very same atoms that make nonsentient, inorganic matter? Basically, I'd like to hear your views on this; it's always been something thats baked my noodle and maybe your perspective will offer new insight?
@LamonicBomb I think that life and dead material are about the same thing. that it's just a random amount of different atoms that creates something when they conect. just like when you are baking cakes. things just exist, theres no real meaning to the existense itself. were only alive because of a coincidense, it just happende. and the only meaning that life can have would be to make new life, reproducing. well atleast that's what i think. it might sound boring and scientifical xD
@TyphorT38 lol well, its your point of view, it doesn't need to be amazing LOL. Anyway, you didn't really answer me; you gave me an example of how life continues. I asked what IS Life? Maybe I asked it in a way that you didn't grasp, so let me try it this way: Your heart beating is the act of Living. How you conduct yourself in the day to day is your Lifestyle. I ask, What Allows Life to be? Ergo, What IS Life? Even if atoms coming together makes a thing alive... Why does it?
@LamonicBomb hmm, if i got it right, "why do the atoms come together and create a living being?" theres no reason to why the atoms creat life, i think, when you bring some atoms together you get a stone, and when you bring others together you get a living being. depending on what you mix ther will be a different result, and i don't know why that happens, and i don't think that we should care to much about What life is. instead we should try to make our lifes as plesant for eatchoter as possible
@TyphorT38 lol, again, not the question I asked. Though I thank you for attempting. Everyone I ask finds grasping the nature of the inquiry a bit challenging, so don't think I'm tricking you or making you look bad. Why atoms come together it due to their electro-static attraction. But, as you just said, sometimes this creates an object. And, sometimes, sentience. If its just in the atoms forming as one, then there'd be sentient rocks, etc. But, their arent. Thus...what... is Life?
@TyphorT38 And, I agree; the quality of our lives is very important. But, so is an understanding/appreciation for the unexplained events and forces that, without which, there are no 'lifestyles' to live. One can keep a clean house, and yet not appreicate the fact that they even have one. Does that help you grasp my question? (FYI, this may very well be one of those questions not meant to be answered, just understood. To teach and not challenge.)
@LamonicBomb now i feel that i would have studied a bit more theology xD I can honestly say that i don't know What Life Is.Why it is, or what its purpose is. i think that "Why we are here isn't important, What we should do with the time we have here, that's what's important." So i guess that i will have to say that i can't answer your question. but this have been a really nice conversation
@TyphorT38 Likewise. I was so happy to converse with you, brother. But, I think in realizing we do not know what Life is, we will come to understand its awesomeness and nobility. You could have been an unaware clump of atoms. Ah! Alas, you...have the gift of free will and thought. Thank you for this moment, friend.
@LamonicBomb Yeah, life is really a beautifull thing. it's early spring at my place and i'm almoust moved to tears every time i sit down to watch the blooming Anemone hepatica outside my house. it's hard to believe that they are just atoms But even atoms can be beautiful and worth cherishing. anyways, have a nice day bro
That comment about samurai who fucked dead bodies is hilariously ignorant. They would never have had time for such a thing. Between perfecting swordsmanship, meditation, and war that is. Give me a break, Not all samurai were honorable obviously. That would be like saying ALL people are honorable. It was so shameful to dishonor ones own life (which reflects back to the ancestors) they would commit seppuku. I suggest that person study samurai rather than spin off of the mouth with mindless banter.
@Rico8458 Zen is one segment of Buddhism. I don't see how it could be the highest form. Unless I hear it from Buddha's mouth, I am not going to call it highest. Besides, what Buddha said is true for all religious core philosophy. So the KEY is not Zen, but rather the WAY of achieving enlightenment. Be it a sage or a fakir or a sufi or a monk. The level has to be high or else, we will always judge this 'form' as something specific, like you said "highest form". LOL
Anyone can waste all the hours in the day studying and trying hard against their will. Anyone can do it for the illusion of wealth and happiness. Most people do it for their parents or their disillusioned dreams, and others do it because they want to look smart. Anyone can wake up everyday and go to work and never be late. Anyone can do every favor for their boss and kiss ass all day. The world of men is dying. The eternal triangle is fading. Mind, body and spirit. Lost in translation.
@Nemesis0300 To change something you need an education, there are 2 ways you change the world. You become a important figure head like a politician or you become an inspirational figure head like an MMA fighter or sportsmen. By your attitude you are not gonna change anything you will just have a low paid job and live in a small house, once you have changed something then you can tlak like that.
School, work, money, sex, drugs, war, fighting, racism, college, homework, studying, pay day, x-box, cellphones, guns and power. These are the things that people think of when you say," real life". When people ask me what I want to do and why I refuse to try hard at work or school, I just look at them and say nothing. I want to live like these folk.. Clean, wise, strong, and full of honor and skill. I am so tired of the world today. No one will understand how important the Samurai Philosophy is.
@lilsm555 I'm not stupid, we should live like this, not the way of murder and war. What you see here in the honorable and bright side, we should live that.
@Nemesis0300 Ok but the samurai who were suppose to be honorable werent lol They would kill children and women and fuck there corpses you think that honorable?
@lilsm555 They didn't do that. Where the fuck did you hear that? That's what the celts did I think. The samuari were Xen Budhists. They had a higher understanding than you and I. The idea of what you just said does not even exist to them, they respect all things too much.
@Nemesis0300 Samurai have gained some squeaky clean image in the publics eye due to movies and lack of understanding of history but they were far from honorable maybe in there own minds.
@lilsm555 Death is just another path of destiny. We all die anyways, you're too liberal to understand. It's like trying to prove oxygen to someone, you can't see it, but you know it's there. I'm an atheist too, so that's pretty embarassing on your part. Once again, the only thing I really envy is the lifestyle shown in this movie -- true or not. I believe that passion in free choice and liberated spirit is the key to true happiness. Someone who uses, "lol" in a sentence knows nothing of honor.
@Nemesis0300 The feeling is quite mutual. I feel the Samurai mindset is far more meaningful than today's morals. Especially the marines' "Unit, Corp., God, Country" morals
@redheadeddude219 Yes, it is a paradox. I studied Aikido for 18yrs...and the hands that can stop a 300lb attacker in his tracks...are the same hands that gently hold my daughter close when she needs comfort.
is there any videos or name or playlist to which i can lisen 2 anout the philosophy of the samurai... bushido or anything related.......... please replay
We do not know our fate, when we will die, or how we will die... We just know we are going to die. The Way is found by death in ones lord, and that his how we make our death the most esquisite and beautiful thing....
@Coaco98 Are you into deep asian meditation , I am just curious bcoz in asian meditation the philosophy is totally different from what u just said....our soul survives the death process...our body dies YES but our spirit , we merely change forms we don't die...but anyone can say that, but with true meditation u can experience that...that makes u a believer..experince.....!!!! not book reading knowledge.
@Coaco98 Then do christian meditation, do some sort of meditation ..slowly work your way upto 2-3 hours a day. Then u will get a better understanding. Or else you will merely have philosophical or book knowledge with no practical knowledge.
@Coaco98 Well that's how I see it. Just sitting down outside, getting some sun, and freeing your mind of all worries. I'm sure there are many different types of meditations. You could find one that fits you.
uncomplicated, poignant and very much appreciated, thank you for this submission to you tube, it makes a refreshing change to loud Americans hurting themselves, though i must confess i do find that entertaining too lol.
wow did you put this together? if so it was excellently done :-) however I was hoping to hear the conversation in the garden "A perfect cherry blossom is a rare thing. You can spend your whole life looking for one, and it Will not be a wasted life." "To know life in every breath, in every cup of tea, in every life we take. That is Bushido - the way of the warrior."
I once did kendo, best sport ever did, but so hard. My hits were to hard and i kept getting told off but my sensai would strike with beauty and mastery. His hit was so soft you wouldn't think it was deadly but it still made my shinai vibrate.
@sshmalado It's the same with movies about Africa or Australia. People wouldn't identify with a non-white. Ahm... or look at it this way. Where I come from, the Power Rangers are asians. But in US and EU they are white folk.
Great collection of scenes, however I feel that putting them in the wrong order like that takes away the impact that the order of scenes in the movie creates...also, you left out one of the most profound scenes!! The scene after the ninjas attack, in the apple blossom courtyard where Katsumoto speaks about the poem he wrote, and "the way of the warrior", Bushido.. How could you leave that one out?!?! That scene is gold.
LOL "what...is your name?" your a funny guy..(unless your serious of course!) but seriously, it needs the cherry blossom scene. that would have been the perfect scene to sumarise.
Actually there was a white man who became a true Samurai. His name was William Adams and he was a Navigator. Tokugawa Ieyasu himself (!!!) made him to a Hatamoto of the Bakufu in the beginning of the 17th Century.
Also there were later on in the Bakumatsu Time (end of Edo Period) several other white people (Dutch and French ones) that fought for the Samurai too.
It's not uncommon that there were Samurai without japanese ancestors.
clearly you didnt pay atention to the movie because that is NOT the way they portrayed it .....not everything is about "race" you know wake up why dont you
@shadow6543 Completely Agree Bushido is not just a philosophy of the samurai or the japanese but can be and should be adopted by everyone the morals and principles are so basic and pure it is ultimately compelling and i personally try to follow the code of bushido as much as i can in day to day life I think the main thing is being aware of what you are doing, saying and thinking in the moment and act accordingly to those basic principles.
I hate it when people complains about an american being the "hero" in this movie. Maybe they got a point, but just let cut the America-saves-the-world-prejudice-crap and focus on the movies true topic - the search for peace in life. It doesn't matter which country you are from for we all strive for a purpose in life where we feel at peace with ourselves. In that aspect no one should judge this movie for glorifying America as the land God loves the most (which it, imp, doesn't).
Exactly! If, for instance, the French made this movie, the French guy would be the "hero". Yes, that's true - this movie is a hollywood production and thankfullly to this it has a great chance to be seen by as many people as possible. No doubt that this "colorful hollywood fairy tale" has a great deep meaning.
As for me, watching this movie is like feeling love; It's my beloved one and I know I will never ever see a better one
I agree with you. But actually, the true heroes of the film are Katsumoto and the rest of Japanese who accepted them as their own, even though he has killed one of them. I think Taka and her children are the ultimate heroes in this movie.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
"oriental philosophy" dude what the fuck is that? there are like 80 cultures and at least 100 religions and ethos under the term oriental - that's like me saying the white people philosphy is tough to learn.
@vortexcito If you are looking for clarification on eastern philosophy and mysticism i would suggest studying the works of a man by the name of Alan Watts. Many of his lectures on zen and hinduism are here on youtube.
@vortexcito ALL spiritual ascension are based on simple concepts. Only a conflicted mind cannot see it. And thus it becomes complex. What samurai believed is simply a part of infinite knowledge that only sages would possess. But even that would seem extreme to some, assuming if it was portrayed in a movie. Even this movie that we love and try to understand, we probably do so using our own preconceptions toward honor+bushido+chivelry. But it is far beyond that.
There are maybe 4 films that I went to see at the theater more than once since 1980. This was one. I was trying to find people to go and see it with me. The peace that he finally gets is what I have searched for all my life and possibly what all of us search for: To be content and at peace with yourself and life. I love the line, "Here I have known my first untroubled sleep in many years." Untroubled sleep is good!!
Beautiful selection of scenes. Captures the essence of the movie. How ever well orchestrated the fights are, it's the human story behind it that drives the characters and the plot. Great movie, and very well made.
Purely Amazing best film of all times.... starting from the soundtrack by hans zimmer down to the actors.. everythin is perfect... hope they make somethin like dat again about samurai...
This is an inspiration of the heart, to a summer sun, imagery glows in brilliancy/ Within a moment of clarity, embrace the powerful visuals as medicine for your psyche/ walking on fire, sounds sparks the spring river of passion and desire/ Frozen tears of ecstasy and sadness give way for my eternal love for this movie. My fav movie period.
I bet you can't even fight. People like you are pathetic. People like you beat up little boys and think you're tough. Just shut up and leave the responses to people of dignity.
I say fuck the last samurai, Tom Cruise should have been the bad guy and Kenji should of been the last samurai, you should be in the movie and get your head chopped off hahaha!
Ur correct.Japan has no native tigers nor lions.but knew they are in the neighboured Korean peninsula. When Kato-Kiyomasa(An powerfull Daimyo) and his followers get over to there. They met a tiger in the forest and get rid of it with Katana and spear as recorded.
why is the last samurai white?

@Nemesis0300 Dont be stupid lol This is the bright side of samurai they were actually incredibly brutal.
lilsm555 11 months ago
@lilsm555 I'm not stupid, we should live like this, not the way of murder and war. What you see here in the honorable and bright side, we should live that.
Nemesis0300 11 months ago
@Nemesis0300 Ok but the samurai who were suppose to be honorable werent lol They would kill children and women and fuck there corpses you think that honorable?
lilsm555 11 months ago
@lilsm555 They didn't do that. Where the fuck did you hear that? That's what the celts did I think. The samuari were Xen Budhists. They had a higher understanding than you and I. The idea of what you just said does not even exist to them, they respect all things too much.

@Nemesis0300 Samurai have gained some squeaky clean image in the publics eye due to movies and lack of understanding of history but they were far from honorable maybe in there own minds.
lilsm555 11 months ago
@lilsm555 Death is just another path of destiny. We all die anyways, you're too liberal to understand. It's like trying to prove oxygen to someone, you can't see it, but you know it's there. I'm an atheist too, so that's pretty embarassing on your part. Once again, the only thing I really envy is the lifestyle shown in this movie -- true or not. I believe that passion in free choice and liberated spirit is the key to true happiness. Someone who uses, "lol" in a sentence knows nothing of honor.

We do not know our fate, when we will die, or how we will die... We just know we are going to die. The Way is found by death in ones lord, and that his how we make our death the most esquisite and beautiful thing....

Coaco98 1 year ago
@Coaco98 Are you into deep asian meditation , I am just curious bcoz in asian meditation the philosophy is totally different from what u just said....our soul survives the death process...our body dies YES but our spirit , we merely change forms we don't die...but anyone can say that, but with true meditation u can experience that...that makes u a believer..experince.....!!!! not book reading knowledge.
subroto81 1 year ago
@subroto81 im talking about the Way, you know, Bushido, and know, i don't do deep asian meditating, as im christian -_-
Coaco98 1 year ago
@Coaco98 Then do christian meditation, do some sort of meditation ..slowly work your way upto 2-3 hours a day. Then u will get a better understanding. Or else you will merely have philosophical or book knowledge with no practical knowledge.

@subroto81 thanks

@Coaco98 Why can't you do a meditation because you're christian? It's a meditation to free your mind.

@ReThinkHeroic I had always thought that meditation was a kind of... buddhist thing... i hadn't know it was to free my mind
Coaco98 1 year ago
@Coaco98 Well that's how I see it. Just sitting down outside, getting some sun, and freeing your mind of all worries. I'm sure there are many different types of meditations. You could find one that fits you.

You can spend your whole life looking for one, and it Will not be a wasted life." "To know life in every breath, in every cup of tea, in every life we take. That is Bushido - the way of the warrior."

That scene is gold.
smooths15 2 years ago 3
I think that you are correct about the order, but ending with that scene is quite enthralling

It's not uncommon that there were Samurai without japanese ancestors.

shadow6543 2 years ago 29

ProtoType989 2 years ago 6
RESPECT. I couldn't have said it any better...
"...focus on the meaning, not the material!"
getdown42 2 years ago
Exactly! If, for instance, the French made this movie, the French guy would be the "hero". Yes, that's true - this movie is a hollywood production and thankfullly to this it has a great chance to be seen by as many people as possible. No doubt that this "colorful hollywood fairy tale" has a great deep meaning.
As for me, watching this movie is like feeling love; It's my beloved one and I know I will never ever see a better one
shader12 2 years ago
I agree with you. But actually, the true heroes of the film are Katsumoto and the rest of Japanese who accepted them as their own, even though he has killed one of them. I think Taka and her children are the ultimate heroes in this movie.

vortexcito 1 year ago
