The section between 3:50 and 6:50 can be a little hairy when it's wet. I drove it a few weeks ago in mid July 2011 in an FJ Cruiser 6 speed manual (though with street tires). There was a hailstorm followed by a torrential downpour. I'm really glad I didn't meet anyone coming up in this section. When I started to slide I used the rut on the mountainside to keep it from sliding left. I was going sideways where you've got no business doing that. The video seems longer than driving it took.
I love Last Dollar Road! It is a favorite destination any time we come to Colorado in Autumn. The vistas are incredible! The aspen forests of the San Juans have a sense of magic when they change to their gold and yellow hues. Its a shame the Fall season comes only once a year, but it is something worth waiting for. We have plans to go there again in late September. What a beautiful place!
Driving thru Colorado on the dirt winding roads, some of which are only a few inches away from the edge of a steep downward drop. I have wonderful memories of this great place on our planet. Much enjoyed your vid and the music. Thanks "M" from downunder
Hi, wondered why it is called Last Dollar Road? It's beautiful and looks like a fairly easy 4 wheel drive.....is this correct? Love all your videos!!!!! Music is perfect for the video too!
@Copperpenny1962 Not sure why it's named that, but I would give my Last Dollar to live on it! Yes, it's a VERY easy dirt road...there are a couple of creek crossings that can be deep depending on rain and snowfall, which high-clearance helps with, but other than that, if it's dry, it's almost passenger car accessible. It's one of the most beautiful drives in the state, I think...the old growth aspen forest is immense.
I love colorado and I thought we had covered most of the back roads..but, we missed this one..will be there in september. Can't wait to do this one...alabama girl.we come to colorado every two years...I always cry when we leave I want to stay so bad....love it..
What an amazingly beautiful place and what a great video .. I am finally here living in Colorado been my dream since I was a kid . Its going to be a great summer !!
the san juan mountians are one of a kind and thankfully are not over run like aspen....well at least not in ouray when i go.... but it is the most beautif place i have ever been and leaves me just in awe when we go jeeping
Saw this video over a year ago which after watching enabled us to decide if we could go down there with our hire car. We did do just that, and this trip is still in my top ten of places that I have been and loved.I must admit though, that there was one place where I held my breath, and you can see the camera move side to side as you avoid the large ruts! The video truly represented the real thing. Gorgeous.
Ye, Last Dollar is a nice, easy drive. The only hinky spots are a few water holes that it might help to have a higher clearance vehicle. Gear-wise, only near the top do you need a little umph to get up and over the pass :) Beautiful trail, for sure!
@flycubfly You should have put in a quick shot of the ranch used in John Waynes movie True Grit. You are so close to the spot 5 months ago Where abouts is the ranch will be out this Summer. Been a few years now but visited the minesite with the snake pit w/ the fiberglass rocks still there South of Ouray, actually about 50 feet from my Aunt/Uncles property.
I am touched by the video JeepsterGal, thank you very much for sharing. The hymn in the background makes it wonderfull, nice choice. I love my Colorado, ahh, and my Jeep.
greetings from Denver! thanks for keeping me up waaaay too late :( haha. i felt compelled to sit here and watch your great videos. enjoyed them a ton!! :)
This is one of my favorites! Reminds me a lot of the trails I used to run in California. Wish I could have made the trip to the San Juan's this year... If you do this again next summer, please let us know... I'm sure I'll have time next year to make the trip... One question: what kind of camera mount are you using? On some of your videos it looks like you have moved to an external mount...
Hey gal. I always love your videos. We had planned on taking this road out of Telluride to go back to our cabin on Cristobal. But we did Imogene TO Telluride and didn't have the time. I can't wait to go back and do it. We posted ours from last year and are leaving next week to go back again. Doing Tincup, Pitkin, Alpine loop, etc. Thanx again
As a kid I saw the many beautiful photos taken from this road, in coffee-table books!
But as a Texan here who's happily been to Telluride 3-4 times ... the conditions were never right for driving this road, much less in a cheap rent-car (do you need four-wheel-drive?) ... I guess the road conditions need to be dry .. sad I missed it
I've never drove it, but now I have to !! I luv ya Jeepster Gal .. now just post a vid of going over Black Bear Pass!
Hi swatty76, thanks for commenting. I just returned from a trip down that way and will be posting some more videos as soon as I can! Still haven't done Black Bear yet...
I pointed this video out to some friends in the Chicago area who haven't been to Ouray in 24 years. After watching this video, they have "coerced" me into a trip to Ouray in July, 2010. Could I refuse? Does life get better than that? Thanks, JeepsterGal for another excuse to go back.
Is this an Indian Reservation? HuuuuuuAAA Hmmmmm
