It is fairly clear that Magnus is avoiding main-line sicilian because he has some ideas prepared in the various lines, that he will probably use in the candidates match.

Anand was doing a similar thing as carlsen is now, before his match against Topalov. Anand would choose "different" openings and find himself in a spot of trouble, and then try to wiggle his way out. Unfortunately Carlsen has been a bit less successful with this technique.
