  • Hank, thousands of hours of training.

  • fire fly butts, that was random.

  • This would be even more helpful if video gamers actually played Foldit instead of Wow.

  • nice title. FTW!!!

  • All that time running Folding@Home, wasted!! D:

  • Comment removed

  • I'll just feed my cat and then start helping science :D

  • This is a definite win.

  • I don't even watch these scishow videos all the way but I've clicked LIKE for 12/12 of these videos.

  • just tell this to my mom

  • how do you play foldit

  • thumbs up if u like bugs with glowing butts!!! :D

  • why is that hot pocket a weird color?

  • I actually did send that text to my mother.

  • I have a dedicated folding rig running 24/7

  • @tardedZnerfZgun Are you sure you're thinking fold.it or are you thinking folding@home?

  • @SinSchism F@H but still helps the same cause

  • why does he curse

  • ...So, I avenge Ronald Reagon by finding a cure for Alzheimer's by learning the distance it takes to one-shot with the shotty in Halo?

  • I've never tasted a hot pocket... but they look delicious >.o

  • I love these vids. So much fun I forget I came here to learn

  • Sometimes I get really pissed that The Katherine got to Hank before I did.

  • GO GAMERS!!!

  • you u_s_ cereal

    man i love transcribe audio

  • ...Oh my gog. I'm going to pass my science test. <3!

  • Silly Hank...Hot Pocket's can't be digested

  • @BigGreenMonk Hooooot Pockeeeeeet... Jim Gaffigan you dog.

  • Evey one who's attacking bokkabonde's comment should probably go back to middle school and re-learn the basics of English grammar. Really, he said "finding", finding as in future tense, not found or even find, finding. Come on, think before you type, its a science show for goodness sake.

  • You're such a cute nerdddd <3

  • can i have some please

  • Your eating that upside down.....INFIDEL

  • i am a nerd and i'm proud, because nerds make the world go round! :D

  • @screech130 Or, just figure out How it goes round... but good attempt. :D

  • @Damienxi haha so literal :P no what was implied is that humans succeed as a species because of nerds

  • @screech130 Lol just making fun. I agree though :P

  • What is it with Hank and hot pockets?

  • There's a difference between educational games and competitive educational games.

  • Videogames also teach people how to recognize, explore, and exploit systems. They can hear how the enemies items and you can craft the items and shops buy the items and quickly figure out how to get the most money fastest. Other media flat out does not teach this, and it is very important to understanding the world. Unfortunately, censorship has kept videogames extremely immature as an art form and that doesn't seem to be changing.

  • If you can make an important project into something fun, then unleash the power of the internet on it, anything is possible. There should be more games like that.

  • Wooo mac user :D

  • Finally, a legitimate excuse to play video games. :D

  • Yikes. This was awesome to hear. I'll keep my eyes peeled for this kind of information in the future. nice mole on your neck. I have one on my cheek. keep it clean dude.

  • draw the stomach on the wrong side

  • Omg..... Is this heaven?!?!?!? Now they just need 2 sum how encorporate pokemon & i wuld completely happy :)

  • That is soooo coool

  • Stomach. In. Wrong. Position. It's not down there. It's somewhere up under your heart. Human biology fail, ugh.

  • Hank's got a zit!

  • They should make that video game into an iPhone app. I'm sure it'd get downloads.

  • Isn't this more biology than it is science?

  • @MajaF93 Biology is a science...

  • This made my week. Now I can justify to my family why I have to go play skyrim

  • whats FTW i no FUCK THE WORLD BUT WHAT ELSE?>"

  • @DEATHSTROKE565 For The Win lol

  • @thelightestpink11 Oh ok thx though i most be stupid than and pile of rocks humping a dead cat

  • hey hank

  • so next time my mom tells me to stop playing videogames im going to scream back et her: IM FINDING A CURE FOR AIDS!

  • @bokkabonde There is already a cure for AIDS. Patent #5,676,977

  • @MrInfoMonkey There is no cure for AIDS. We can slow it down to a practical halt, but we can not reverse it. If there was a cure for AIDS it would be all over the news throughout the world, which clearly has not happened.

  • @MrInfoMonkey hehe you made me laugh with your uninformed post.

  • @MrInfoMonkey FALSE. That was in the news. It's a theoretical cure that hasn't been proven.

  • If only we can get the guys at machinima to start playing this then we'll have like toads of wannabe let's players saving the world.

  • Hooooottttpppoooocckkkeeetttt... ME WANT

  • like the background ;P

  • He was so gonna say "link in the doobly-doo" haha!

  • @omarmusictube - The retroviral protease M-PMV. The original paper is titled "Crystal structure of a monomeric retroviral protease solved by protein folding game players" and was published in Nature Structural and Molecular Biology last September..... I was curious too.

  • its a bloody good game as well

  • This is the coolest thing ever.

  • Apparantly doctors make less mistakes if they're a gamer. SO gonna be a doctor

  • Speaking of Super Mario Brothers.... Hank and Katherine ;)

  • learning is fun.

  • aaannndd now that hot pockets a tax write off way to go hank ::DD

  • WHOA that's so cool!!

  • If I had seen that before my chemistry exams.. I might have gotten a better grade, because I didn't get this structure part of proteins

  • Does Foldit update the games so new proteins can be folded?

  • @AlmostGreatness Yeah, all the time.

  • @AlmostGreatness i think so, but my computer doesnt read the file correcty (and i have vista)

  • I can now feel better about playing videogames when I get home today. :)

  • i feel like soon there will be a new awesome game on hank games!

  • "which is just meta"

  • 3:27 . . . . like Phalanxifor??????

  • Protein and Pro Team... As a non-native speaker, it took me a while to even realize there were two different words involved ^^

  • I tried playing this game a while back and gave up after like ten minutes. Boring.

  • Subscribed.

  • Which protein? Do you mean GP120? You need to be specific if you're going to touch on AIDS. That's a topic that deserves accuracy.

  • The Science Show: Piano!

  • I got my science fix for today! Subscribed!

  • I had no idea Gordon Freeman was so talkative! :O

  • Is it bad that I actually texted my mother from halfway across my country that she was wrong about video games??

  • But still cool ^^

    Telomarase for a talking topic?

  • Old news

  • Is it just me or does the background seem to bleed out side of the video....?

  • I learned more from this than my entire gr 12 chem and CHEM 1010 class......thank you

  • Take that GTA bashers!!

  • Why isn't this news?!

  • @WhatTheHellsAGigawat Because it involves video games and parents and close minded people think video games are the devil.

  • GAMERS! UNITE!1

  • @mooglew This is for your computer. You download the game and play it. The objective is to fold the proteins into their stable state. The problem scientists had before is that a computer can determine if the protein fold is stable or unstable, but can't easily fold it to be stable. This is where the gamers come in, as they are very quick at making the unstable proteins into stable folds.

  • Where does the term 'meta' come from? I know what it means, but not its origin.

  • @sidnegirl It's greek for "beyond" or "adjacent" or even "self"

  • @sidnegirl dictionary döt com is your friend: (in ancient Rome) a column or post, or a group of columns or posts, placed at each end of a racetrack to mark the turning places.

Origin: 1570–80; Latin meta cone, turning post

  • Does it work for handheld games too, not just console games?

  • I linked this video to my Biology teacher, and he showed it to all of his classes the next day. Thank you Hank Green, for teaching people and kids around the world!

  • The face ferret... I thought it was over...

  • at 1:35 the stomach is on the wrong side of his body

  • @SuperRustyTrumbone Somebody probably told this already, but, "Situs inversus", wikipedia it

  • "which is just.... meta" slayed me

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!

  • I got the latest issue of Mental Floss, the January-February one. It had an article talking about this dude who made customizable glasses with build-in lenses that one can adjust to their prescription. At the side of the page it had a little sidebar thingy that talked about Hank's 2D glasses. I was so excited to see that, you have no idea.

  • @funsizedclaire HANK GREEN WAS MENTIONED IN MENTAL FLOSS MAGAZINE?! Thank you so much for sharing this!!!

  • MY TEACHER SHOWED US THIS IN CLASS TODAY. I think she might be a nerdfighter...

  • @xangie8204 SHUT UP YOU WHORE!

  • @Goombowser Take a chill pill, man.

  • @xangie8204 My teacher once showed us his 13 severed hands video. This was two years ago but now that I think about it...

  • That's amazing !!!!!

  • I WANTED TO WRITE ABOUT FOLDIT IN MY COLLEGE APPLICATION SUPPLEMENTS BUT I COULDNT EXPLAIN IT PROPERLY. WHY COULDNT YOU HAVE POSTED THIS EARLIER, HANK.

  • so I can decrease world suck by playing video games? that's fricking awesome

  • Could you do a video where you talk about why scientists are so upset over the neutrinos-faster-than-light thing? And the theories to explain it?

  • @FuntasticUniverse they're upset because they broke the laws of relativity and if they broke that law of it, (nothing can travel faster than light without infinite energy) then how many other laws of relativity and physics are not real and arent right?

  • @FuntasticUniverse It's been disproved, and they accepted their calculation errors.

  • @FuntasticUniverse /watch?v=mT-mCQY2XBE

    MinutePhysics covers this.

  • @FuntasticUniverse They proved that the math itself was wrong. Blah de blah blah and a nutcracker thats it. It is obviously far more sophisticated than that, and it may still be possible, but their test was done incorrectly to achieve what they thought they achieved.

  • @FuntasticUniverse because of einstein teorie E=MC at square

  • @FuntasticUniverse Try searching michio kaku on youtube for that. :)

  • @FuntasticUniverse nothing is faster than light. Thats what has them upset. Simples

  • @BJMCM11

Actually there are a group of massless entities (I think called tachyons??? maybe), that move faster than the speed of light all the time. They are completely opposite to us in the fact that, when they lose energy they actually move even more faster than the speed of light and when they gain energy they move at a velocity closer to that of light...

Hence all this is to disproce that you saying "nothign is faster than light" statement is in truth - false...

  • @Ratoscruvy do a bit of research before spurring your nonsensical shite. Jesus even the first sentence of the Wikipedia entry lets you know everything you need to know. You are basically quoting fecking star trek you lunatic

  • @BJMCM11

I'm sorry, but what part of my comment was nonsense? Everything I've stated is true. Also, I must apologise for not "googling" or searching wikepedia for little piece of information I know...

  • @Ratoscruvy All of it. A little piece of information that you think you know. I once thought that Santa was real, doesn't make it true. Its a hypothetical particle. A thought experiment and nothing more. Seriously, there is nothing I hate more than people talking about something they know nothing about. You are talking out your ass.

  • @BJMCM11

All of it? SO tachyons dont move faster than light? Arent they massless entities? When they lose energy dont there Velocity increase?

Seriously, there is nothing I hate more than people accusing other person about something they know nothing about, or perhaps just recently searched on the internet to find.... You are an ass.

  • @Ratoscruvy No because that goes against every single law of physics that exists you fucking imbecile. Shit I didnt need to google it to find out they were hypothetical.

The fact that you aren't even bothered to go and read up on the subject before arguing is ridiculous. Just because I am educated enough to go find a paper and read it before arguing does not mean I know nothing about it. I don't need to prove my intellectual superiority over you anymore goodbye

  • Hank:"Gather 'round everybody, listen up. You do NOT have to be a scientist--!" *video pauses to load*

    Me: "You mean, I..I don't? You mean I'm FREEEEE??? ;__; "

  • Ah! So this is what that whole 'Folding at home' on the PS3 was. I used to leave it on sometimes thinking I was helping science in whatever way it was. Glad to know it was about unfolding proteins!

  • I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!!!

  • What an awesome way to decrease world suck

  • 10 people are proteins

  • @Aaronandfabs You know proteins can be good, right?

  • I should probably take action to understand this more thoroughly before I comment. What I need to find out though is whether in fact the program determines the most stable state by running a simulation based on known criteria, you know, so as to circumvent the catch 22 of needing to know what the most stable state is already to know who wins... My bet's on that, but I really shouldn't comment until I know...

  • =)

  • Why is your stomach on the wrong side?

  • @nomiddlee0824 epigenetics did it, watch out they'll get you too :O

  • 0:53

    THE AMAZING HANK ZIT.

I feel like the decision to shoot these in such good quality was a bad one.

  • this dood smokes a lot of weed

  • I hsve a feeling that in the future teachers are going to be showing these videos instead of Bill Nye the Science guy.

  • Do a video on the 4th spacial dimension

  • It's funny because my bio teacher was talking about this a the end of class today. I'm totally sending him the link to this video to see if he'll show it in class.

  • It was developed by the University of Washington! That just made my number one choice for college so much cooler!

  • Wasn't the portien that they decoded HIV? Ive also read an artical that there is a vasine been made, as well as a cure.

  • Luckily I happened to watch this right before I started to write my essay on the evolution of video games. Also this make me proud as a life-long videogamer.

  • Don't get Hank to play the science aiding video game based on Super Mario Brothers games. He's terrible.

  • @Llawliet246 Really? That was definitely not a reference - I live overseas in a time zone that makes it impossible for me to watch the live shows. That's such a funny coincidence!

  • i wanna be a firefly butt protein :)

  • Gamers are some of the most dedicated people in the world. It's almost like they've spent their whole lives saving the world... Wait

  • The constant cuts in these videos are disturbing....

  • Proteins digesting proteins seems like a form of cannibalism.

  • BACON PROTEIN!!!

  • so what your saying is proeins are a specific sub type of carbon structure or a molecule subgroup?

  • I am playing fold it right now because of your video!

  • i though this video`ll be about folding@home, which is also uberawesome and mostly done by gamers with powerful gaming rigs

  • HOOOOYEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

  • :( no more hotpockets in videos. I am too hungry :(

  • Maybe this is a Canadian thing, but our hot pockets don't look like that at all. There more round, like balls of dough filled with pizza goodness. That looks better though.

  • This isn't the only way scientists are crowdsourcing. Zooniverse has programs where people can help scientists identify dips in light from stars, which could indicate orbiting planets, or identify solar storms in images from satellites STEREO A and B. Just a bit more productive than Tetris. ^.^
