  • Mestre Canguru!

  • no se escucha pos mierda

  • I recently started playing berimbau and I thought I was getting really good, but now I feel like I suck! Wow I want to play like this!

  • amazing...

any1 knows the name of the song?

  • my brother is rediculous at this instrument i hate to say it cause they probably know eachother but i think mestre cafu form grupo cafu capoeria has one of the best singing and playing styles ive ever heard. i need to make a video.

  • call me a noob if you want, but is tuning involved?

  • Kind of. You tune the berimbaus to each other so they sound right...for recording, some people aim for a specific tone to fit the song they're singing on the track. In general, you aim for the best sound our of the verga (the stick) and cabaca (gourd) as a couple. When you have a trio, you tune to each other to make the best harmonious sound.

  • woooooooow

  • Can you play more than two notes with this thing?

  • @natureboy84 It plays three different notes and can be variated using the cabassa (gourd) to resonate the sounds on those notes. As a percussion instrument the possibilities are endless on the berimbau

  • @fridgeopened You can play way more than 3 notes... more like 26 notes / tones.

  • Exactly, it's a percussion instrument; 2-3 notes is enough to do wonders in the hands of a master :)

  • @natureboy84 Nature, in case u ddn noticed, berimbau is a percussion instrument, not a guitar or something. You should try to play it. Cheers

  • i`m not into capoeira stuff but i admit i like this. very good

  • he is the Jimi Hendrix with a berimbau.

    Axé

  • "He got it with *a* japanese, this one"

  • ...What the hell does "He got it with a japanese, this one" mean ?!

  • It's a joke. A japanese thing in Brazil usually is fake or crap; it's not racism or anything.

  • lol none taken

In Egypt, when you call something Taiwanese or Chinese it means the same thing :P (coz, almost always, the chinese & taiwanese merchandise on the market is of extremely low quality)

  • "he got it in the japanese, this one" at least that all I could make out of it

  • L4D style

  • Demaissss!!!! Parabéns

  • sick

  • Maravilhoso!!

  • Orgulho

  • brutalll

  • eso pau de bamboo?

  • Nao, Pra fazer o berimbau e biriba e pau.

  • Santos: "MESTRE DEPUTADO!"

    Suassuna: "...Suassuna"

  • Muito loco o toque!!!!

  • Well - it's not that clear cut. The musical bow is an instrument found in well over 120 cultures (documented. There are almost certainly many more undocumented). It is found all over the African continent, and it is extremely likely that it came to Brazil with African slaves, hailing from a variety of tribes/regions/"nations". BUT the musical bow is ALSO indigenous to parts of South America (including modern-day Brazil), though it doesn't always appear exactly like the berimbau.

  • GRANDE MESTRE MUITO AXÉ PARA USTED

  • es impresionante gran mestre

  • This video is amazing. Such talent. I am new to the capoeira path but aspire to be as good as this mestre. Truly inspiring

  • OMG! I'm so determined to improve my berimbau skills like RIGHT NOW!!!!! super duper impressed!

  • Contra Mestre Eurico said that Mestre Suassuna is Jimi Hendrix with a Berimbau!

  • o loco é mtu foda........

  • A strange instrument, but used to great effect by Max Cavalera, without whom I wouldn't ever have heard of it.

  • agreed

  • further agreed

  • Furthur agreed, they sound so amazing!!

  • Yep! I'm brazilian and i love the sound of berimbau and i must say that Cavalera created an impressive combination of sounds introducing the berimbau to our so loved heavy metal. Awesome.

  • The name is Cavalaria... So Brasilero tambem.. Abraço

  • Fala. ;-)

Hi. We are referring to Max Cavalera, from Sepultura Rock n Roll Band. ;-)

  • Yes, Max Cavelera's usage of the berimbau introduced me to this instrument.

  • Jeje, Today I Met Him In Colombia. weeeeee!

  • Viva mestre Suassuna!

  • O Mestre Suadduna E Mestre Jogo De Dentro... Dois grandes...

    Greetings From Colombia.

    Sensei David Duarte (Judo)

  • maestro de maestros....

  • porqué se ríen?

deberian contemplar el arte con respeto...

    maestro!

  • The instrument is beautiful! Just like the Portuguese language. I truly wish to learn Capoeira now.

  • Portuguese is what they speak Brazil...

  • True... capo is an African art as well... so Afro-Brazilian.

  • not so true, a few historiers, principaly europeans, claims that in Africa there is nothing that looks like the Capoeira played in Brasil. Also, there are registers that tells brazilians native-americans used to play Capoeira to have fun, 100 years before the africans were brang to Brasil. Obviously, that capoeira was very diferent from what we know as capoeira today. The word Capoeira comes from the Tupi, a brazilian native language: "Caa" means grass, bushes and "Puera" means recently cut.

  • Well... the Europeans were wrong again. They are often wrong when assessing indigenous cultures. Anyway, there are fighting forms that exisited in Africa and anyone capoerista knows about batuki and other systems. I have seen footage from African civilizations appearing to be doing capoeira. Who denies the African origins of capoeira these days? There were also Africans in South America hundreds of years before slavery. Read van sertima's, "They came before columbus."

  • bonita

  • mestre suassuna manda mto!!

  • i took this but i had Mestre jelom in my capoeira class it was fun too wen he came to the badyzado he was nice to the other kids that were in my class but my instructor aladin died in a car acseddent so i stoped goin for a long time

  • adorei!!!

  • mto bom

    é de matar

  • toca mtt!

  • esto esta bien chidisimo

  • The hammer tones at 2:23 is where the game will become very aggressive right? Capoeira will become full contact instead of a friendly game.

Does anyone have a video on how to play the hammer tones? I know the basics buzz buzz closed open open.

  • Hi jus199,

that tone is called "Iuna" and was created by Mestre Bimba.

The Iuna game is for mestres only (or high graduated students).

It's not an aggressive or ful-contact game.

Instead it's very elegant and flowing, born to show the beauty of Capoeira :-)

  • lindo actuaçao mestre =) saude

  • eeeeeeeeoooooooooooooooo fora de hora rsrsrsr

mestre suassuna toca muito e canta tbm

    parabens

  • Meu mestre =) Beleza d pessoa!!

Oo

  • grande Mestre Suassuna do grupo Cordao de Ouro !!!! valeu meu mestre

  • where is this instrumentfrom?/ west africa?

  • brasil ;)

  • no, I mean originally

  • still brasil =P

  • thanks, but I see that the berimbau is angolan in origin, brought to brazil by african slaves

  • Go to Angola and try to find a berimbau then....

  • smart reply.still angolan.where do you think most of the blacks from brazil are from too?

  • Sudan region. The Bantu people, from the Angolan region were the second largest ethnicity to be brought into Brazil (mostly to the southeast). And that is besides the point too, especially since the first berimbaus, as we know them today, emerged in Bahia, where most Blacks (90%) are of Sudanese origin.

  • finally some one with reason. Thats what ive been trying to get at,Since there are no know string instruments indigenous to that part of the world before the african diaspora, the berimbau had to be brought there

  • Comment removed

  • The musical bow is also found in ancient cultures from places like: Greece, Japan, Nepal, India, Rome, etc.

Each place gave it a name, so it has over a hundred. The Portuguese in Brazil named the hybrid instrument that arose there Berimbau Da Barriga, which literally means Jaw Harp of the Stomach.

  • angolan -congolese

  • like you know every thing,PEACE!

  • This man is Grand Master Suassuna, Co Founder of Group Cordao De Ouro with Mestre Brasilia... He is legendary for his skills, including Berimbau with one hand, behind his back, all kinds of stuff that must take 50 years or so of practice... Peace. Axe.

  • anyone know where i can download this at

  • I bow to this man.

He is truly a master on this beautiful instrument.

  • I have a tiny berimbau from when I was in Brasil, but I can't play like that. waaaay coool :)

  • That was awesome... One of the best players!!!

  • just to hold the berimbau still is a challenge... and, justa as an example, most of the grestest Bob Marley's songs are played with three chords. Beauty might be blurred when you leave in ignorance.

  • I admire his skill on the instrument...but...can it only play two notes? I don't understand what is so beautiful about this instrument.

  • If you don't belong to some culture, probably you'd not have more profound feelings to understand it better. You need a more sensitive ear to see how skilled he is, playing this difficult Berimbau. The variations of vibrations and rithm changes a lot, but you only can hear that if you have trainned ears...

  • most western instruments can only play 12 unique notes, and most western musicians can't really do all that much with them. The minimalism of the berimbau is something that can definitely be appreciated along with its unique sound. It's power and complexity is in its simplicity.

  • Thank you both for your replies. I am obviously do not have trained ears but I can now appreciate this man even more.

  • Maestro!

  • Wonderfull... :)

  • BEAUTIFUL song :D what is name of it ??

  • Mestre Canguru near the end lol

  • mt god if i was in a roda with him on the berimbau, that would be intense

  • lol right, but sooooooooooooooooo fun man

  • Amazing. Anyone know where I can find lyrics to the second song he sings?

  • did you get them? its: capoeira for foreigners is grass (play on words) but for brasilians its for killing...
