Left foot forward only if you're left handed with a sword. Either way, never limit your range, that sheild is merely a fail-safe and perrying aide. Stay on your toes and keep your knees bent. Blade straight at all times. Whether blocking high, mid or low, always straight (except when defending a low/high attack, in which case you turn and raise your blades handle from a low, straight blocking stance) learn the 12 basic points of attack.
I think it's cute you all think you know what you're doing. Really, I do. In reality, you doing almost everything wrong, from the footwork, to the shield/sword partnership. Your shield is never your primary defense against another sword or long blunt object (arrows are obviously an exception) You need to focus and keeping that blade straight in one hand and using the flat of your blade to fend of attacks. RIGHT FOOT FORWARD!! Especially if you're using a shield
@nsight123 : You're obviously forgetting that this is FOAM weapon based combat. The weapons are far lighter and have a tendency to bounce off of things. This changes everything completely from normal sword combat. It's not the same, and most of your swordsmanship practices will never work during it.
Also, simple geometry and physics here – a stab is always going to hit its mark quicker than a broad, sweeping slash, even if the slash looks cooler. Stab any dude who raises his sword for a broad cut, because it's physically impossible for him to strike you first.
If they have a shield and you can condition them to circle or sidestep, even better. If you throw successive strikes at one angle, 99% of people will sidestep and you can get them to walk right into your weapon.
People watch too many movies. IRL, a swordfight would end in about 5 seconds with one person mortally wounded.
Do NOT lead with a static foot. You don't see Fedor Emelianenko, prime Roy Jones, Anderson Silva or any elite fighter standing with both feet planted on the ground. Footwork is king, and to fight (with or without weapons) you should come from odd angles and put the force of your body into the strike.
I know many LARPers would disagree, but you can learn a lot from a boxing class.
I 100% agree. My teacher did years of mma and jeet kune do and he's trying to open up his own school specifically for melee fighting. AAMF (acadamy of american melee fighting) We're in Vancouver Washington and we really need some PR

No, wouldn't be fun at all. Not only would they not stand more than a few seconds, but i'd probably get a side ache from laughing so much. hey there, nice video, I have one question though, are you allowed to do shield kicks in dagorhir? the only thing that might not work with it (besides kicking someone really hard) would probably be messing up their shield. what if you rip the cloth/other thats on the front, or mess up the paint or something. Thanks for the help. (I hope its legal, I would really to kick some shields)
"4.7.12 - Shield Kicking: Players are allowed to kick shields, provided the kicker keeps one foot on the ground. (No flying kicks!) Shield kicking must be done with regard for the safety of other fighters and will be monitored carefully by the Heralds."
i'm not actually in dagorhir (yet) but i'm interested in joining :D
@kazesamurai1000 U can shield kick but no flying kicks XD they actually show a little bit of shield kicking in the later parts of the series and since the shields are easy to make most of the people don't mind if it gets ripped or the foam breaks
Only thing I see wrong with this is that without ability to throw head shots, the shield guy can stand there forever holding that shield in front of him with relative safety unless he's faced with an opponent with longer weapons.
You can, if you can get in close. The problem is that I'll hit you before you close the distance, unless you also have a shield and you can close the distance fast enough. If so, then you're right, the length won't matter.
Don't even really need to have a shield. If you use your other arm to protect yourself from the shot, I would gladly trade an arm in order to kill the other guy, assuming of course you kill them. But there are many different scenarios that can occur.
I like my kiteshield, but I am seriously good at defending and attacking with a 2 hand blue longsword, held in the imaginary reverse blade stance, wich I literally had to learn to use myself (it was created in an anime) and it's my secret weapon, I am a beast with that blue.
It costs about $40-50 to get the matrials for all your stuff. The group near you will be happy to help teach you tobuild/sew.Some will sell premade equips, search online. Not really an expensive hobby.Fun,athletic, friends, tall tales to tell...good times.
well I'd love to hear those techniques....I mean sure it's great if you get inside their range but how do you step forward faster than they step back WHILE warding off heavy blows?
and if you pull that off, they still usually have a back up weapon to pull out
well most people who use the long range weapons like pole axes ect arent as good with the shorter range weapon they have, and if your any good with short range and get around the range you can usually get the kill, also its best to back them up to a wall or something. a good technique is just misdirecting their weapon and coming in for a hit.
...the Spartans are the only ones allowed to do that ad they all died at Thermopylae. a good warrior can not only fight with either foot forward but is equally as good with both hands. a shield is a good tool, but use it as an extension of yourself rather than an immovable barrier to keep you out of harms way. stay mobile and move, the samurai had a philosophy of never remaining in one place, to keep moving, even if it is to circle your opponent. improvise and take advantage of a weakness.
in medieval europe master of sword said : if you do not move you are dead.
about not moving their shelds - notice that they do not hit heads nad have large shields, so they hold shieds in 1 position and do not have need to do this
but after alll - is only game for boys what they are doing
Not true,I fought SCA for 20year,got sick of politico crap. This is just as fun, fast and hard. All training requires this sort of slow work to program muscle memory so the technique can be done with out thought.Different fight style,yes.Inferior,no.
Its notSCA its called Dagorhir,we pad the weapons instead of the people.Things you can do in this would not work inSCA becauseSCA hit power has gotten out of hand how hard you have to hit depends on relative disparity in political rank.If Im a duke I can ignore 3 head shots in crown tourney because my opponent is not at least a knight. The officals would not step in because they need the duke to get themselves or their people up in rank.Later my opponent would be told 'that's the way it is.
I guess a rattan stick is closer to a real weapon than a padded baton.I played SCA for a long time, all fighters are equal, some are just more equal than others. Those padded batons if well made actually behave more like a real weapon than rattanMelee is more dynamic in Dag with gappling and back attacks, light unarmored flankers and surging shield walls+lots of archers and javilins
ok, i have to agree with genericusername562, because while i can't deny that those tactics may work at something like Ragnarok it truly is a bad form of swordplay. i am a swordsman i have been for a while, and the one thing i have noticed while doing dagorhir is that there is a lack of finesse when fighting. it may not have started this way but from what ive seen its become a contest of who has the biggest shield with the longest spear...
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
yeah thats what you think. Im 6'6 390lbs. I thought id be knocking everyone around. I was wrong, I been playing for a few months and I still get knocked around.
Your probably just a fucking momma's boy, "i have skills with swords and sheilds amongst my skill with all melee weapons"
so, your getting knocked around, and think that means you get to be an asshole to a random person? from what i've seen, a lot of people at dagorhir don't fight very well. so you getting knocked around is showing how bad you yourself are.
as a general comment, the students here are holding their weapons better than the teachers.

I recommend you pick up a sport, start lifting weights, deit/get a good nights sleep, and socialize with people. This will ensure the loss of your virginity and future happiness.
I didn't even remember being filmed, haha. It should be kept in mind that this was less of a "class" and more a discussion for the people physically present.

and if you pull that off, they still usually have a back up weapon to pull out
waldoman7 2 years ago
well most people who use the long range weapons like pole axes ect arent as good with the shorter range weapon they have, and if your any good with short range and get around the range you can usually get the kill, also its best to back them up to a wall or something. a good technique is just misdirecting their weapon and coming in for a hit.
DavinSteidel 2 years ago
that is one advantage a shield user has over a dual wielder(sp) they can defect hits slightly faster

...the Spartans are the only ones allowed to do that ad they all died at Thermopylae. a good warrior can not only fight with either foot forward but is equally as good with both hands. a shield is a good tool, but use it as an extension of yourself rather than an immovable barrier to keep you out of harms way. stay mobile and move, the samurai had a philosophy of never remaining in one place, to keep moving, even if it is to circle your opponent. improvise and take advantage of a weakness.
strykr2028 2 years ago
not only samurais
in medieval europe master of sword said : if you do not move you are dead.
about not moving their shelds - notice that they do not hit heads nad have large shields, so they hold shieds in 1 position and do not have need to do this
but after alll - is only game for boys what they are doing
slavuBOG 2 years ago
about the way they fight - a lot of non-sense postures and moves
no headshots no fun
slavuBOG 2 years ago
Not true,I fought SCA for 20year,got sick of politico crap. This is just as fun, fast and hard. All training requires this sort of slow work to program muscle memory so the technique can be done with out thought.Different fight style,yes.Inferior,no.
redstar170 2 years ago
but i think video is not about SCA. as far i know it looks different, but i might be wrong
i only wrote that i see many non-senses in this training - from perspective of few years in combat.
slavuBOG 2 years ago
Its notSCA its called Dagorhir,we pad the weapons instead of the people.Things you can do in this would not work inSCA becauseSCA hit power has gotten out of hand how hard you have to hit depends on relative disparity in political rank.If Im a duke I can ignore 3 head shots in crown tourney because my opponent is not at least a knight. The officals would not step in because they need the duke to get themselves or their people up in rank.Later my opponent would be told 'that's the way it is.
redstar170 2 years ago
i prefer when both opponents have the same rights
pading weapon.... the feeling of holding and figthing real weapon is, for me, priceless
slavuBOG 2 years ago
I guess a rattan stick is closer to a real weapon than a padded baton.I played SCA for a long time, all fighters are equal, some are just more equal than others. Those padded batons if well made actually behave more like a real weapon than rattanMelee is more dynamic in Dag with gappling and back attacks, light unarmored flankers and surging shield walls+lots of archers and javilins

have you ever used steel weapon ??
slavuBOG 2 years ago
only steel I have used for SCA fencing.Mainly thrist with some draw cut allowed.

ok, i have to agree with genericusername562, because while i can't deny that those tactics may work at something like Ragnarok it truly is a bad form of swordplay. i am a swordsman i have been for a while, and the one thing i have noticed while doing dagorhir is that there is a lack of finesse when fighting. it may not have started this way but from what ive seen its become a contest of who has the biggest shield with the longest spear...
strykr2028 2 years ago
ya i agree. most vids u see there are a shitload o spear users and alot o ppl with wall shields. duel wielding takes alot more skill

yeah thats what you think. Im 6'6 390lbs. I thought id be knocking everyone around. I was wrong, I been playing for a few months and I still get knocked around.
Your probably just a fucking momma's boy, "i have skills with swords and sheilds amongst my skill with all melee weapons"
LOL! maybe in a video game you fag
BredrinJ 2 years ago
so, your getting knocked around, and think that means you get to be an asshole to a random person? from what i've seen, a lot of people at dagorhir don't fight very well. so you getting knocked around is showing how bad you yourself are.
as a general comment, the students here are holding their weapons better than the teachers.

ive been thinking of playing dagorhir lately how i found out about this awsome sport was in a dvd documentery called the master of the rings

If you're under 14, I think you might have to get your parents to sign a waiver...not sure.
But there's probably a field near you if you're in the USA.
HeadRage 3 years ago
It's in Somerset Pennsylvania (USA). Based on the videos I've seen, it looks like most of the people there are 16-30. I'm not sure though...

Its 14 and up, and there are more then just the one in PA, The one there is Badon Hill. Go to Dagorhir[DoT]com for more info.
TheFallenOfEryndor 2 years ago
it is 16-75 but if you are 14-15 you need a parent or guardian to sign a waver so ya you have it partly right

I recommend you pick up a sport, start lifting weights, deit/get a good nights sleep, and socialize with people. This will ensure the loss of your virginity and future happiness.

Yeah, the audio quality here is lacking. The instructors weren't really projecting well, except for Magnus (most of the time).

I didn't even remember being filmed, haha. It should be kept in mind that this was less of a "class" and more a discussion for the people physically present.
