Some people live outside the loop in suburbia-land. To them, Houston is a whole different experience. It's hard to even communicate to them how different it is inside the loop. Here, there are small cafe's and shops, gay pride day, rice village, montrose, museums, international festivals, more international cultural events, shady TREES, coffee & tea houses, etc.

@bigtown The illegal part is true, depending on where you live. But I have lived in the city for 5 years, never once seen a cowboy hat except on a traffic cop. Only see boots worn around rodeo time and that's it. Maybe the suburbs and country areas are different, but there are really no cowboys anywhere downtown at least. Dallas has cowboys downtown, but not Houston. My two cents. Oh and Houston has an openly gay mayor, not quite the stereotypical Republican stronghold people think Houston is.
