  • How Do U Evolve Onix???

  • Badass bitter berry!

  • lol! Level 8 Steelix! However I never realized Magnemites carried Metal Coats...learn something new every day! That can come in hand down the road if you find a higher level Onix...but the chance of it knowing screech might be low. Otherwise looks like Sudowoodo came in handy. Quilava NEVER STOOD A CHANCE!

  • ah, I loved the rival from Gold/Silver. It's the last time we had an evil one, and I prefer evil rivals to good rivals because pokemon already makes me feel bad when I play it!

    Dammit, now I miss Gold...

  • @smallells

I also didn't return to any of the games for many years thinking it wasn't even a game but just an extension of my diapers, but then realised it was still quite fun to play.

  • @MoogleBoss There's something about it that makes you want to play it again when you get older. You know, like nostalgia.

Or the pretty colours and flashing attacks.

You can never quite tell with an attention span like mine.

  • A level 8 Steelix, I gotta admit, that made me laugh. BTW, I've just defeated Red and am now focussing on defeating the Elemental Archfiends. I should be able to reach Kefka by the end of this week.

  • @Arceusvids

Good luck grinding your Captain Basch's levels.

  • @MoogleBoss Ha! I saw what you did there! You can't level up in this challenge! Although I did manage to catch a lvl 45 Ultros, albeit that it's of a pretty high level, its only known move is constrict... I wonder why.

  • @Arceusvids

Well, Ultros knows Terra's weakness to all things tentaculous.

And I hope you understood that by grinding I meant grinding your Cpt. with stat experience from the surrounding Cactuars, then transferring him to Lucca's PC and getting him back out with improved stats.

  • @MoogleBoss Oooh like that huh? Well, I gotta confess something, I kinda added another restriction to this challenge to spice things up a bit. No PC-usage.

  • I still cannot get over the fact, that Pokemon looked cooler in the old games then their new counterparts do now.

  • @NathanWubs

I think they've been gradually running out of fresh ideas for new Pokemon. Seriously, Aggron? Well, if that doesn't remind us of anyone... Every no-evolution form (well, almost) getting an extra evolution? Okay...

I have to say this trend sorta started in GSC, but when I got my Crystal game as a kid I didn't see any bad omen in the game at the time.

  • @MoogleBoss Well I do not mind that too much, I just do not like all their artwork. I also do not like it that black and white are basically worthless as you have almost no trading options. So, yeah I will wait until later again to get a new pokemon game, maybe 7th generation as you know that pokemon will continue.

  • @NathanWubs

Idk, if we're talking OLD Pokemon, I like what they look like in the remakes (for GBA and NDS respectively). I just find playing through the game to be neither as refreshing nor as satisfying as it was before (I did play the 3rd Gen quite a lot, mind you).

I can also see the complexities in the online battling metagame, though nowadays only as an ignorant outsider (didn't like natures & DVs in RSE, and stopped keeping up with the series around that time).

  • @MoogleBoss the competitive metagame is pretty boring as everyone uses the same stuff.

Plus every generation has a new gimmick that is on half of the teams.

gen3 was skarmbliss all over(it got seriously annoying when half of the people just stalled to death)

gen4 was stealth rock(rendered fire pokemon pretty much useless unless they resisted rock and way too many pokemon learned it)

gen5 is weather spam thanks to more pokemon getting autoweather moves.

  • @Bananamatic

I guess some trends could be observed in the metagame of the first two gens as well. In RBY, almost every competitive team has Chansey, Kazam, Tauros and Snorlax, there's paralysis abuse, exploding, body slam on nearly everything that can possibly learn it, etc. GSC is a bit more varied but has its recurring traits too. I guess you just can't all types and units equally usable in competitive play.

  • @MoogleBoss The next gen always seems to nerf the previous trend though.

2nd gen nerfed psychics, 4th made bliss less useful by going by phys/spec and not by element, 5th removed the Stealth Rock TM etc.

The tiers also suck as they went way too much outside of competitive. You had people disconnecting on Garchomp and Salamence in random/noncomp matches just because Smogon called them uber.

  • @Bananamatic

Back when I played competitive GSC when I was little, I almost always used Celebi on my irc team and, while a few people complained, I didn't get many disconnects. The whole WiFi scene must be spoilt or something, either way I'm not part of it in order to comment on it coherently.

  • @MoogleBoss Back then there wasn't Smogon.

It's a good information resource but WAY too many people take it as the definitive guide to pokemon battling.

Basically, if smogon bans it and you use it in a completely friendly battle, some people still get pissed off.

OHKO moves are banned, direct evasion boosters are banned, yet more of the same held item are allowed.

Oh and don't forget that more than 50% of players use pokesav these days.

  • @Bananamatic

Back in the days of irc gsbot when I played, nobody cared if you hacked your game file or not. For competitive purposes, you had to enter an imaginary team that you didn't train and then see walls of text of your intense struggle against somebody else.

Smogon looks like a good resource, but really, if you play strangers on the internet, you should kinda be prepared to play OU, unless specified otherwise. Seems too obvious to me, personally.

  • @MoogleBoss Well, the smogon tourney stuff still works on simulators like shoddy battle.

The thing is "legit hacking", where you use pokesav to edit really hard to get pokes into your actual cartridge.

It's almost not worth it to breed for a pokemon with the desired Hidden Power type.

One thing are the competitive simulators, another are wifi battles through the actual games...almost everyone hacks in their teams these days.

  • @MoogleBoss *points to Banana* I agree with him. Well I just liked some of the art style in the older games. I loved how haunter and Gengar looked for example. That is all, but after the third Gen it has gotten a bit worse. I hope they are able to revive the series in a better state later though, but I am not counting on it. And for a single player collector like me it is much harder to get everything!
