I read a review , believe it was from The Rolling stone Magazine who had Hank rated as one of the top 100 singers of all time. The article went on to say while many may find this strange to rate hank so high, Hank had such a pure voice it could cut through wood. After listing to this song I can see what they mean. What a beautiful unvarnished voice.
Pure. Music with dignity. You couldn't have paid this man a cent to sing a song about something he didn't yearn for in his heart and live through. No auto tune, no special effects, no big time producer on a huge budget, no million dollar music video, chances are some of these tracks were done in one take, and there's not a single mistake nor flaw found.
Real music made by a real man. No modern day corporate "cowboy" copycat, they don't get the saying "your born original, don't die a copy".
Although Hank Sr.passed away before I was even born,My dad kept his albums on the record player and the songs on his lips.Somehow I can't imagine growing up without Hank and Ernest and,and,and....
I think Rufus Payne's ghost is carrying the rhythm in this song. That steady swing beat and subtle guitar accompany the beautiful swooning of the student come master.
Any aspiring songwriter should study this man. His songs have everything down - the lyrics, story, hooks, melody, arrangement. Wish there was more actual video footage of him.
Best Hank tune, ever! Had the pleasure to go to Hank's museum in Montgomery, AL a few years back. Sat in Caddy he died in. Saw lots of hand written letters (chicken scratch with pencil) to Audrey, his mom and even to infant Jr. Was cool how simple and real he wrote. Eerie part was that he died at 28 but looked 58 in lots of the pics. $7 was bit pricey (it's a tiny museum), but paid it. Was only one there on a Saturday so I bribed them with an extra 10 to sit in the Caddy. Didn't allow pictures!
cant stand these poeple that say ohh saw this on family guy or a vidio game.dont you idiots know this has been around hitting the charts poeple loving it all around the world befor that crap was even around
I don't understand how anyone could dislike this... They must be people who have never felt the love of a women, the burn of whiskey, or felt the strings of a good ol' folk insturment.
What's amazing is how many songs he wrote that we not recorded. He the oldest looking boy in his twenties I've ever seen. He was the original self destruction, before Hendrix, Morrison or Joplin. Sad!
Not only the greatest country singer/songwriter ever, but one of the greatest of any kind of music. His influence on country, blues and rock & roll artists is unequaled.
One of the very few in the Rock & Roll, Country Music, and Songwriters Halls of Fame. And he died well before reaching his peak...much like Buddy Holly.
Love hearin them white boys singin the white boy blues...hence, Country Music. Now, folks, don't get all jumped up on me...that's how it is. Don't mean I 'don love it any less. Hank was a rare beauty indeed.

My very favorite Hank tune--thanks for posting. His yodeling on this tune sounds just like a dobro guitar! And as on most of Hank's records, some fine steel playing by Don Helms.
MR. WILLIAMS DRANK BEER - I MUST NOT WATCH OR LISTEN TO SOMEONE WHO DRANK ALCOHOL!
THUS, I MUST LEAVE THIS VIDEO AND FIND A GOOD SONG BY REV. GEORGE JONES, A FINE UPSTANDING, NON-DRINKING SORT!
I AM GLAD HANK, JR. DID NOT DRINK ALCOHOL, LIKE HIS POOR DAD DID, MAYBE I SHALL LISTEN TO "WATER BENT AND HEAVEN BOUND" - YES, THAT IS WHAT I SHALL DO!
I listened to Jr. first and then Sr. Both good versions but I'm old school. So many of his(Sr's) songs were just gut-wrenching broken heart moments of his life put to music. This song was used in the baseball film "Long Gone" with William Peterson and Virginia Madsen ( Miss Dixie Lee Boxx!)
@buminacan14 alot of songs by artists arent written by them they are written by other people and the artist sings it their way thats why there are mulriple songs in country that are the same as a song in RnB and/or pop
@Kyle1084 He had a house on Franklin Rd. in Nashville and another house near Demonbreun St. and 16th Ave. which was a Hank Tourist site back in the 80's (I got to go through it in '86 or so) but I think its been either torn down now or was sold - not sure. The home vids appear to have been at the Franklin Road home.
My candle burns at both ends; It will not last the night; But ah, my foes, and oh, my friends It gives a lovely light! That poem describes Hank's career perfectly to me, he was the best that ever lived ... he just couldn't stay so long.
I remember hearin' this song the first time and right away I was thinkin' that this fella has some real crappy luck.Being older now and gettin older everyday makes me realize that this fella definately had an incredible insight on how a woman can rip a man in pieces
Name all the great country singers/writers...and I mean ALL OF THEM. Then put them in line behind this man 'cause he is the greatest that ever lived my friends.
@basenjib123 .. I deff. agree to that HE IS THE BEST!, came up listening to Hank Williams Sr. each time i'd be at my grandparents house,I think Hank and Johnny Cash are still the only country singers my grandfather listens to today

"I'm going down in it three times, but Lord I'm only coming up twice."
I love it. Been there before, dude. Nothing better than Hank when you're brokenhearted. Mealy-mouthed, feel-good bullcrap will only make you more depressed.
His woman scene spelled it all. No disrepect for Hank Jr. His momma was an opportunist. As a Southern boy and the fact she has passed I will say more ill will of her.
My dad will be 81 on the 21st of this month,God willing.,..and he's not fieeling so good now but when it comes to Hank Sr he still gets a twinkle in his eye.
@yermomsboxx exactly. His grandson is about all that's left. Willie is still around and Shooter Jennings is teetering on being a sellout. RIP Hank Sr. Johnny and waylon
Hank was the greatest that ever lived. He had alot of problems some of his own doing and some not, and he probably died early because of them. Hank was the best ever despite his flaws!
You can take those modern day frosted haired , manicured finger nailed , earring wearing , sleeveless t-shirted Nashville cookie cutter wanna be country music artists and put them where they belong , on the pop rock charts . THIS IS , AND WILL ALWAYS BE , WHAT COUNTRY MUSIC IS ALL ABOUT !
Now that Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash are with Hank Sr. , dead and gone , there is NO such thing as country music anymore .
what is jsut so sad is that if he were just getting started today he would fail as an artist.... we have all lost our way with music.... rip hank you represent a better time for us all
"You got to have smelt a lot of mule manure before you can sing like a hillbilly."

Silly suit and stetson? Ignorance is the night of the mind, void of the moon and stars.
Hank will always be remembered as one of the all time greats of country.

I think if he were alive to see what's become of country music, he'd rather be dead.
