yea rotaries dont have a head or valvetrain its awesome, just housing but those things are sideways and held together by alot, the only thing you could expect to blow is the apex seals but if you dont have a turbo and have better seals then it will last forever

JDOxO the coolest things about these engines is you can have a turbo one and do 7 second 1/4 miles or NA and have a F1 car, but the thing that makes rotaries better than V8's is because it has no head or block and just a engine casing and 2 or 3 rotors just get the best rotors and seals there is and you can have a 1000hp rotary that cannot blow because nothing can really blow up in it lol

A rotary will make power every stroke whereas a piston engine makes power ever 2 or 4 stroke depending on the design. Rotary will get much more power for the same displacement as piston. 2.3L 700hp, naturally aspirated (no turbo or supercharger) that'd be impossible on a piston engine without forced induction.

Ive seen a methane rotary putting out over 2000hp still more than an F1 engine which is ridiculously expensive. 700+hp is attainable with a rotary on pump gas without forced induction and to get more power all you need to do is slap on another rotor, or another and youre looking at over 1800hp with a 4.2 liter 6 rotor, again, on pump gas no forced induction. Tuning would be a bit of a pain with that many rotors though And thats an obscene amount of power anyway

@Brendon00000 Ive heard the opposite in some cases, that rotaries can sometimes run too cold. The reason being that the rotating rotor causes heat swipe, not allowing enough heat to build up which can cause running problems. A good rotary shouldnt over heat with proper oil cooling which is about 70% of how rotories are cooled.

I'm making it my mission to run a rotary when I start road racing in two years. If I can't run something like a four rotor, I will no doubt be doing Spec Miata. About 1 1/2 more years until I'm road racing cars. =)
@Parag0n you might be right, but these are wankel rotarys an the rotarys (or radial engines) used in planes are usually still piston engines just in a circular kinda set up... you probially already know this but they have the same name but work very differently....
@JozeyHall i think your confused buddy, rotors are used in small planes as they are very reliable and there is little to no chance of catastrophic failure compared to a piston engine, also if a rotor overheats it will not seize due to the different rates of expansion in the rotor and housing.
@ChaseSpeer The easiest and cheapest way to get a 20B (Triple Rotor) is to buy a Mazda/Eunos Cosmo that has been wrecked, though you have to be careful what engine you get as the 20B has 4 series, A, B, C and D with the D series being the most sought after.
However you can get a A/B series, most serious rotary workshops will stock 20B front and end plates / housings etc from later models that will enable you to build a moster engine :)

You have probably seen the Star Mazda Series cars with Rotary's, they really don't look like f1 cars other than being open wheeled. The length, width, down force, weight, tire width and power output are nowhere near the same, but still very neat and fast cars.

Mostly because they are smart. Because they want a reliable engine that has good horsepower and torque and they won't have to rebuild every month.
I bought mine to rebuild. I liked the size and the competence of the chassis. I drove the rotary before I pulled it and it confirm that I was doing the smart thing.
My car now has 200 h.p. and 200 ft/lbs more of torque without touching the engine. I know also that I won't have to put up with the finicky nature of the rotary.

11,000 RPM on a 20B would take lightweight rotors, clearancing the rotors , oil delivery enhanced at the bearings, lightweight seals, huge spark, plenty of fuel and an ECU that would be capable of tuning a car safely at such a high RPM such as a MOTEC.

And just to kill any 'witty' retort, yes I do have a RX-7, a 1987 GXL with 96k on it, producing 100+psi compression figures on all faces. This is in addition to my grandpa's 1974 RX4 that has clocked 400,000+ miles with only the aforementioned maintenance.

You have probably seen the Star Mazda Series cars with Rotary's, they really don't look like f1 cars other than being open wheeled. The length, width, down force, weight, tire width and power output are nowhere near the same, but still very neat and fast cars.

The same can be said about head gaskets, pistons, cams, conrods, harmonic balancers etc.
Apex seals held up pretty well when the Mazda 787B won the Le Mans 24 hour, and is still the only Japanese manufacturer to have won that race.

Too bad on the street, and in smaller performance arenas they fail. Piston engines aren't as prone to failure as the rotary is.

Mostly because they are smart. Because they want a reliable engine that has good horsepower and torque and they won't have to rebuild every month.
I bought mine to rebuild. I liked the size and the competence of the chassis. I drove the rotary before I pulled it and it confirm that I was doing the smart thing.
My car now has 200 h.p. and 200 ft/lbs more of torque without touching the engine. I know also that I won't have to put up with the finicky nature of the rotary.

11,000 RPM on a 20B would take lightweight rotors, clearancing the rotors , oil delivery enhanced at the bearings, lightweight seals, huge spark, plenty of fuel and an ECU that would be capable of tuning a car safely at such a high RPM such as a MOTEC.
