The hole is located next to the sea estuary and its to do with stabilisation of the ground. The sand is being pumped out but has hit a layer of clay.

South coast of England. This is the underground incinerator under construction for a new energy from waste plant. One big deep hole!

Yeah, it sure is one big hole..... I thought we went deep with 12 feet one time when we were building a tank for a cattle shed!!
