  • Hi again Teresa, I figured it out. Please disregard my previous message. It's late and I couldn't get my mind to clarify what the author was saying until I read it over and over. Thanks again

  • Hi Teresa, I am a beginner to crocheting. I'm following a pattern by Red Heart for a visor cap. It reads dec, sc in next 6 sc. I understand the decreasing but the pattern author has a note that says: DEC (decrease) = draw up a loop in each of next 2 sc, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook. Please explain what author is talking about. And thank you for your easy to follow tutorials...Kudos to you!

  • The pattern I'm doing says "dec over next 2 sc around" What exactly does these mean.. I know I'm decreasing i'm just not sure if i do the decrease twice? Please help..

  • @HuMaNxBloOD The best answer will come from the pattern author if that is possible. My interpretation is that you are doing single crochet decrease all the way around since it says "dec over next 2 sc around". I hope that makes sense.

  • Teresa is awesome

  • @bloweduppy You are kind, thank you!

  • why does the decreasing always show holes? i'm making a sackboy and whenever im decreasing it always shows holes. please help!

  • you know what? I think the light just went on for me? I think the 2(3) combination refers to "2 or 3"; in other words, single crochet together 2 or three stitches together.

  • @rebeccabasenfelder A decrease can be two or three stitches together.

  • What does the following mean: sc2(3)tog? I understand what it means if it said "sc2tog", but what does the "2(3)" combination mean? I cannot find this explanation anywhere! Thank you very much.

  • @rebeccabasenfelder im not exactly sure myself

but maybe it means to do it 3 times

  • @kellypinklily I would suggest that you make a chain, just as an example of how small you want your opening to be. You can use that as a guide on how many decreases you will need.

  • My pattern says "{dec2, 6sc} rpt around (42). I understand how to decrease, but does it mean to decrease twice when it says that? So far, Ive gotten the pattern perfectly until this part where it says to decrease.

  • IN MAY INSTRUCTION, IT SAYS DEC,SC IN NEXT 5 SC, TWICE, IS THIS EVEN POSSIBLE, 5 IS AN ODD NUMBER, HELP

  • @themagicmelon922 You will work the decrease over the two stitches. Then you will work an individual single crochet in each of the next 5 stitches

  • Thanks for the video. It really helps.

  • thanks for the video:) And especially thanks for putting it in slow motion:)

  • @rasteely I try to put a bit of slow motion in all videos now, when applicable. Thank you! :)

  • how would i crochet this:

*skip 3 ch, (sc, ch 3, 3 dc) all in next ch; repeat from * to last 4 ch, skip 3 ch, skip 3 ch, sc in last ch; turn

and how would could i read it?

  • @amyappleg That looks like a typo to me :-) cause that wouldn't even be possible at the end.

  • How to decrease at the end of the row?

  • @laspilly The technique for decreasing is similar or the same for many techniques. It all depends on what you are making and where the decreases look the best. I have found that making the decrease just before the last stitch looks nicer than making it right on the edge. It is up to you and what you like the best. There are many different ways to accomplish the same end goal.

  • Your tutorial videos have helped me sooo much! Thanks from a newbie. Now to make a friend some baby booties for her baby shower!

  • At the beginning of the video there's a link you can click to get the star pattern ^_^

  • oops, I've been doing decreases wrong then! ^^"

Thanks, now I can do it right! X3

  • this is very helpful but i have a question that doesnt have to do with increases or decreases.

What is the pattern stitch on the project your holding in this video? It looks very pretty and i would like to try it.

  • The pattern is the star stitch. I will send you the link and insert an annotation to the video.

  • Hi there, can you please help me with this question. (ignore the other ones if you haven't got to them). I am trying to make single crochet baby leggings for my daughter and the panel is not long enough to wrap around my daughters thigh. Can I somehow add more crochets to a side to extend it? Please let me know. Thanks very much!!

  • You should be able to add single crochet increases, which is two stitches in the same stitch to make the thigh larger around.

  • Thanks for the advice on the leggings. I will do that. It might save me alot of trouble.

  • hi I like your work and I'm intersted to learn all your stitchs but I want to know why we need to use stitchs decrease & increase

  • It helps to save your projects from destruction. For example I am making a single crochet beanie cap that she has a video on and you need to have a certain number of stitches every round and this helps if you have to many stitches in a round. You can fix it by using this. =)

  • thanks for your response

  • Increase and decrease are used for shaping crochet projects. If you want something to get larger, you add increase stitches(2 stitches in 1 stitch) to make it lay flat or get larger.

Decreasing is often used on the neckline of apparel in shaping the shoulders and sleeves so they fit together. It is used in little stuffed animals too.

  • thanks soooooooo much

you are the best : )

  • Your videos are great!! Very clear pictures which helps and the slow-mo is a brilliant idea. Have mastered the single decrease - all I need now is the single increase, but you don't seem to have one. Do I just do extra chains on the end of the row?

  • Thank you. The single crochet increase is two stitches in the same stitch. You can watch any of the basic beanie cap video's and they show increases.

  • thank you for this tutorial ~ very clear and easy to follow, much appreciated by this beginner crocheter!

  • You are welcome. :)

  • Theresa, I learned how to crochet from your tutorials and I made, so far, a sweater and a bunch of hats, flowers for those hats, I even made few amigurumi dolls, following your instructions.

You are a good teacher and I thank you for all the tutorials!

  • Thank you. :)

  • thanks

  • ooh okay, thanks!

  • Could you do a video on a chain space increase? my instructions say dc, ch 1, dc (Eva's Shawl on Ravelry)

  • That sounds like a V-Stitch to me. I recently posted a V-Stitch increase the other day.

  • I like the color combination of this one. It makes the galaxy stitch look even nicer. Thanks so much for all the videos. :)

  • Thank you. The stitches are similar but this is the full star stitch.

  • Opps.. now you know I am a beginner.. ha ha..

  • I am happy you are here learning, as a beginner. It is impossible to remember all the stitch names. I don't even know them all.
