this episode always made me sad as a kid because I didn't get how we were supposed to be happy/ amused (?) about Grimes dying. I know he wasn't a nice guy, but his life was shit and Homer was an absolute dick in this episode. It's the only episode that made me very uncomfortable as a child.

It's almost as if Homer was trolling Grimes on purpose throughout this episode. He was annoying and ignorant on levels far greater than usual for his character.

@LimeZYX Yeah. The fact that Grimes didn't pour the acid down Homer's throat (let alone smacking it out of his hand) says he's a pretty decent human being. Too bad Homer pretty much destroyed what was left of the poor bastard's miserable life. I always find this episode rather odd, because Homer's normally a jerk with a heart of gold. In this episode the heart of gold seems to be on vacation, but the heart of potent, concentrated jerk is filling in.

@spjfrat Really? I thought Grimes was actually a really nice guy, despite his horrible life. Homer was such an asshole in this episode, it's like they removed everything nice about him and amplified his worst traits by 100. I mean the guy destroys Grimey's meagre possessions, steals his food out of greed, then when Grimes saves his life, Homer almost gets him fired.  (Even after all this, Grimes is pretty nice to people who are not Homer.)

Agreed, I still love the old simpsons and always will but this episode sadly showed what homer simpson was to become in the future, homer became like this permenantly in the episode they killed off maude (flanders should've killed homer for that) and that's when homer turned into peter griffon, homer used to be stupid yes but he had common sense and knew when he screwed up and had a heart, now he's just a jackass and completely unlikable (like most of the character there now).

@wesker100000000 Agreed, I thought this episode was an early reminder of things to come (and it's like you read my mind on the Peter Griffin comparison. While I can appreciate what they were trying to do (seeing how a realistic character would behave in Springfield, a total subversion of a typical happy sitcom ending), the execution was horrible.
