And this lady was a "contralto"? She hit high notes that many so-called "high-voiced" singers today wouldn't even try. I hadn't heard of Turner before, but this lady was definitely a musical treasure.
I remember seeing the band, "The Smiths" play in 1985 and this song played just before they took to the stage and I can still see that moment vividly in my mind. It was such a moving song that ended right when the drummer for the band started playing and the curtain went up. I will never forget it. It was magical.
Beyond magnificent. Ms. Turner played the character of "Nettie Fowler" in the film version of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic musical "Carousel" starring Gordon MacRae and Shirley Jones. She introduced this song in the film and sounded just as glorious as she did on this Ed Sullivan clip. Brava!
@SugarTomAppleRoger I appreciate your comment about Claramae Turner and "You'' Never Walk Alone" very much and cannot understand how it was flagged as spam.
@opertutto O. I didn't realise that it was. Has someone removed my comment now? I can't find it. I think Claramae is the best anyway. I may have mentioned Kathleen Ferrier somewhere as being a great singer also. I think Claramae is definitely in this class, and they are the best two contraltos to my mind.
@opertutto Couldn't agree more with SugarTomAppleRoger, and thank you so much for posting this personal favorite! I remember hearing this very show and even my father had tears in his eyes...
@opertutto I'd guess it was a football fan who thinks it's only meaningful when sung by a crowd at Anfield or Parkhead or Gerry and the Pacemakers. I actually like this song in all of those contexts but some people just can't look beyond their immediate experiences.
That song seldom sung so well. I wondered why I'd never seen this on CAS, but since it's that Ed fellow and not Bell Telephone Hour or Firestone, that explains it. Despite compression, the sound with good headphones, pretty good.
A beautiful, elegant and subtle performance.

The woman had charisma, conviction,
a deep connection to her music, and
the ability to project the feelings contained
in the song outward to the audience!
Beautiful color in her voice...artistic in-
terpretation but not grandiose or showy!
Her enunciation and dynamics are superb! Thank you, opertutto, for
posting and to CurzonRoad for
sharing! Brava!!

Very enjoyable - superbly sung. The prowling Hitchcock-like figure of Ed Sullivan is an added bonus.

Always pleasant to received praise for Miss Turner's singing.

Beautifully sung. The right amount of emotion and a simple approach to the music and lyric. The chorus behind her is not to be believed.

Great, wonderful, magnificent performance, presented in the manner and format many of us fondly recall from the 1950s. Many thanks!

Thank you, libbychecks. You will probably be pleased to know that Miss Turner is living graciously in retirement in her native California.
