Thanks so much for this upload. Love listening to sucdaughterh classical music and specially where Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustald Alla Rakha are concerned - two of my favourite artists. Another to add on to this is Anoushka Shankar, Pandit Ravi Shankar's daughter. Love this rag.

@erider1 Please, play us some sitar music. Go on. Obviously, since you're being so critical of such a great musician, you should be able to do better.
Music knows no race, skin color, or other form of discrimination. Music is a universal language. Music is one of the few things from heaven that we have on earth. The closer you are to music, the closer you can be to God. Plain and simple.

Good point 420lovinlife ... Ravi was pretty good (not the best) in his days and with the luck of george and the 60's became what we make of him now. i hear he is now 90 and what you say is what he is exactly doing in selling with his daughter's sleazy packaging. And no i am not talking about Norah as she is real.
I will see the argument that "American youth need more music other than pop to influence them", and raise you by saying that they need more education on the history, meaning, and context of other music.
Yes it is true that traditional Indian classical music is very spiritual and can really calm ones mind. Its a highly evolved form of music. But many ppl (especially westeners) seem to overdo the spiritual bit. Over the years, Pt. Ravi Shankar's name has evoked feelings of mysticism and spirituality. Thats just complicating things.
At the end of the day, he is a legendary musician. Respect him for that and dont make him sound like some Godman who holds the secret to your spiritual bliss.
@VHalen2112 this is indian music. the sitar player (one in the middle) is ravi shankar, and the tabla player is allah rakha (was one of the world's best), now passed away. the melodic pattern the sitar is playing is called raag Charukeshi. Raag's are the musical forms that we play. i just read the description of the video and it says Rupak Taal, which means that it is 7 beats. therefore, the raag must also be 7 beats long. Raag = the musical pattern, Taal = beats for the tabla. hope that helps

america needs more of this culture influencing the youth, instead of pornographic sales pitches brainwashing everyone into thinking that doing wrong and living life for self pleasure is the point of the human experience, mark of the beast or just greed in its purest
I think Allah Rakha and Dildar Hussain are the greatest Tabla players in recorded history. It is a great pity that beautiful music such as this is losing popularity in the sub-continent. @420lovinlife why is it always america? I mean ur right in some respects but thats being a bit harsh dont you think? @Hunty1130 420lovinlife is compelled to speak out. Because the world has witnessed in 2 generations. Americans go from an optimistic & self reliant people, with a willing spirit to help someone out. To a selfish & mean spirited people who annually consume 2/3 of the worlds resources. With a blatant sense of entitlement & disreguard. Madison ave & Wall st. Have made this all possible. For the sake of profit. They'd pimp their own mothers.
@shipwreckedcamper Your point is completely valid However, I also think that it is completely unfair to blame everything on the Americans. I also have a small feeling they don't quite consume 2/3 of the worlds resources or else we would all be dead by now. I would also like to point out how do you think the world works? With-ought Wall st. the world economy would simply collapse. Im also quite sure that most Americans wouldn't pimp their own mothers
@Hunty1130 This may come as a shock brother, but I am an American. I've seen the change that has come over people here since 9/11. Fear to intollerance, grief to hatred. & the worst an all consuming belief that if you throw enough money at a problem, it will simply go away. & please allow me to clarify. Before the economic slow down. 2/3 of the raw materials produced in the world. Were used in the manufacture of goods for the US market. I believe most Americans are brainwashed consumer addicts.
@420lovinlife The point of the human experience is what you make it. If that means a life of hedonism for some, that is their prerogative. You just can't define the purpose of our existence without imposing your own views onto others, which is wrongful in itself.
@420lovinlife bro this culture might be high but its embarassing to say that this is all that is intellectual in india now. indian philosophy and culture are nuthin but instruments of incitin national chauvinism. India too has gone down the gutter of Nihilism
@420lovinlife i guess pornography is bad but you cant help responding to your bodys needs once you hit puberty you cant control yourself nevertheless pornography is making it worse and damaging youths minds mentally & physically.
@420lovinlife I agree that American needs more of this culture, but I'd rather not force anything... Young people like me find this stuff and love it. Maybe if it were more available more people in general would be interested in it because they're able to listen to it and find that they like it. So basically what you've just said...
@420lovinlife Ravi was no stranger to the party life and he got laid like a rock star (he's got a few ex-wives and out-of-wedlock kids, too). But yeah, he's a musical genius of the highest order.
@420lovinlife living life for self-pleasure is the entire point of the human experience.. its just nice when our happiness does not infringe of the happiness of others.
@420lovinlife You sound like a strict preacher. The point of life is to enjoy whatever beauty you can find (both artistic and aesthetic) without harming others while at the same time bettering yourself. It's not "the mark of the beast" as you would put it. Live a little
@420lovinlife or paranoia on a religious base.mark of the beast? 666 is a cyfer for emperor Nero not mark of some imaginary devil.youre right we need more diverce culture but it isnt porn destrying things its chit like xenophobia, religion and lack of education.
Pandit Ravi Shankar has written all kinds of compositions. He has also composed orchestra pieces for western/eastern fusion. He has composed new ragas, compositions within existing ragas and much much more. Not to mention the brilliant and constant improvisations. The format of Indian Clssical music is a little more complex than just having songs. They are composed of parts both fixed composition and improvisation.
in an Indian Classical concert 90-95% of the stuff is improvised on the basis of Raagas and Taals. The only time you hear a lot of fixed material is in a Tabla solo, and even that is largely adapted.
I find Indian music and the sitar so awesome and hypnotising I can't put it to words. I could seriously listen to this stuff all day and be in my element., but one must go to work. LOL
Ravi sankar ji and vilayat khan sahab have there own unique styles, from what i have gathered from my limited knowledge is that ravi ji plays more staccato (with more khatka) and vilayat khan sahab is the master meend (glide). both are great players in their own way
hello to every one , pandit ravi shankar is one of the best classical indian sitar player , but ustad vilayat khan is the sun of sitar , he plays more classical then ravi shankar
Awesome ! This is transcendental music. Incredible. If there are better music than this I bet you'd have casted already. So far, only Ravi Shankar has the ability to synthesize it to something everyone can hear. If there are better works of art like these, "Let's hear them out too" Rauf Sheldrake, Mt. Lavinia, SL..
You're absolutely right. Mastery of music is a lifestyle, not an achievement.
It's great in that this brings out some of the more eccentric elements of his personality. Some exciting modal exploration, and a few really characteristic Andolan sways.
In a talk, Ravi-Ji was at pains to emphasise that a single "note" is in the Raga not a single note, but a tone containing an infinity values that wavers around a center. The Western piano was designed to play a single pure note, the purer the better and this was and is strange to Ravi-Ji.
This is remindful of quantum theory, in which the elementary particles are clusters of probabilities.
[Parenthetically, when you think about it, the physicists lacked imagination when they speculated on elementary particles: for the space between ultimate things is something out of the ordinary, and it'd surprise the thoughtful soul to find things in quantum theory mundane and sublunary.]
Like, it's just annoying when I'll be playing a Ustad Shahid Parvez CD, and someone will ask "cool, is that Ravi Shankar?" It's like, I have no problem with interest or curiosity, but it's like assuming every reggae musician is Bob Marley or every asian actor is Jackie Chan--it's just ignorant.
okay, well, for one, I'm NOT criticising Ravi Shankar, he's better than I'll ever be, It just reminds me of how most people think that Reggae is all about Bob Marley, or sitar is all Raviji...meanwhile, people like Shahid Parvez Khan, or Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt are just as good (although I like Shahid Khan more) as Ravi Shankar. that's all. wasn't insulting anyone. but Shahid Khan has improvised Ragas that are pretty amazing.
Well, at the level Pandit Ravi Shankar plays at, better is a useless term. Still, there are many sitar players who the general public aren't familiar with that many prefer over him. Pt Nikhil Banerjee, Ustad Vilayat Khan, Ustad Rais Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Rt Kartick Kumar, Pt Partha Chaterjee, Pt Balaram Pathak and so many more greats out there. Pt. Ravi Shankar is one of those greats. Its just sad that many unfamiliar listeners think every sitar Cd must be by him. So much great music out
I don't think there are "better" players than Raviji. His style is fairly unique, considering that nobody else who studied sitar under Allauddin Khansahib sounds the way he does. For instance, his use of the ring finger on his right hand is fairly unique amongst sitar player, as well as untraditional. But it works fine. So, others are just "different". I personally love his alankars and chalan, but I do not believe he is the most melodious sitar player. Still, subhan Allah raviji! You inspire me
Also part of what I'm talking about with people thinking whatever sitar they hear must be Ravi Shankar, they miss out on hearing what makes Raviji and the other great players so unique. Its obvious to me when I hear Pt Ravi Shankar compared to Pt Nikhil Banerjee. Its seems most of the time unfamiliar listeners just glance over the subtle flavor that ICM has. This is part of what makes all the great players UNIQUE! I
Who cares about this generation? If Ravi Shankar Said you where a lalu would u say fine? Stick to the originals and youll get somewhere. The Way Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Played The Jori Was Amazing
I appreciate your concern. As tempting as the offer is, I would still like to decide for myself what would and what would not "get me somewhere". Oh, if Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji said you were lalu, would you say fine?
i love this ... why is it a problem? i dont like drugs.. i love folk music from over the world.. and indian classic music is like one of that.. i like my own swedish folk music too :-) why cant we all be friends?
'only fools compare' is a philosophy not a formula for being smart or perfect- perhaps thinking too much is the problem below - hint: maybe you could enjoy the beatles AND ravi shankar both a lot more

GatoradeIsNotJuice 8 months ago
@420lovinlife You sound like a strict preacher. The point of life is to enjoy whatever beauty you can find (both artistic and aesthetic) without harming others while at the same time bettering yourself. It's not "the mark of the beast" as you would put it. Live a little
CatastrophicDisease 8 months ago
@420lovinlife or paranoia on a religious base.mark of the beast? 666 is a cyfer for emperor Nero not mark of some imaginary devil.youre right we need more diverce culture but it isnt porn destrying things its chit like xenophobia, religion and lack of education.

the funny thing is, most arent fulfilled or living with pleasure. true pleasure is spiritual - deeply emotional and a state of being.

has ravi done any actual written songs or has he just done improvisations?
rockgod111 2 years ago
Pandit Ravi Shankar has written all kinds of compositions. He has also composed orchestra pieces for western/eastern fusion. He has composed new ragas, compositions within existing ragas and much much more. Not to mention the brilliant and constant improvisations. The format of Indian Clssical music is a little more complex than just having songs. They are composed of parts both fixed composition and improvisation.

rockgod111 2 years ago
in an Indian Classical concert 90-95% of the stuff is improvised on the basis of Raagas and Taals. The only time you hear a lot of fixed material is in a Tabla solo, and even that is largely adapted.
yjvnz 2 years ago
This is one of the Shringara/sensual ragas, isn't it? Either that or Shanta/peaceful.

Ravi sankar ji and vilayat khan sahab have there own unique styles, from what i have gathered from my limited knowledge is that ravi ji plays more staccato (with more khatka) and vilayat khan sahab is the master meend (glide). both are great players in their own way

Refreshing!!!...that's all I gotta say about that...lol

hello to every one , pandit ravi shankar is one of the best classical indian sitar player , but ustad vilayat khan is the sun of sitar , he plays more classical then ravi shankar

Thank God music isn't basketball.
There ARE no champions.
There IS no #1.
It's NOT a competition.
It's MUSIC.
It's for setting aside all that other stuff.
And being in the moment.

Sreggaematic09 2 years ago 3
The question is, is Marijuana a drug?
also, I wish people would expand their tastes...there are so many better Sitar players than Ravi shankar, you just got to look a bit
Sreggaematic09 2 years ago
name us some better players. I mean if your gonna claim that then why didnt you mention some????
Darkmartian 2 years ago 2
okay, well, for one, I'm NOT criticising Ravi Shankar, he's better than I'll ever be, It just reminds me of how most people think that Reggae is all about Bob Marley, or sitar is all Raviji...meanwhile, people like Shahid Parvez Khan, or Pandit Vishwa Mohan Bhatt are just as good (although I like Shahid Khan more) as Ravi Shankar. that's all. wasn't insulting anyone. but Shahid Khan has improvised Ragas that are pretty amazing.
Sreggaematic09 2 years ago
So much great music out
Itheprosperone 2 years ago 4
I don't think there are "better" players than Raviji. His style is fairly unique, considering that nobody else who studied sitar under Allauddin Khansahib sounds the way he does. For instance, his use of the ring finger on his right hand is fairly unique amongst sitar player, as well as untraditional. But it works fine. So, others are just "different". I personally love his alankars and chalan, but I do not believe he is the most melodious sitar player. Still, subhan Allah raviji! You inspire me
CarnaticConnection 2 years ago 3
Also part of what I'm talking about with people thinking whatever sitar they hear must be Ravi Shankar, they miss out on hearing what makes Raviji and the other great players so unique. Its obvious to me when I hear Pt Ravi Shankar compared to Pt Nikhil Banerjee. Its seems most of the time unfamiliar listeners just glance over the subtle flavor that ICM has. This is part of what makes all the great players UNIQUE! I

The drums, as a set are called "Tablas".
As I recall, Tabla means right, Byan means left.
dantheartisan 2 years ago
wrong, byan is left, dayan is right...tabla is the set.. In Punjab Gharana it is known as chatu (small drum) and Duggi (big drum)
ikirtan 2 years ago
actually... tabla is sometimes referred to the dayan..

but that is historically incorect

what do u mean historically?
ktkdrummer 2 years ago
I meaan look up the history of the tabla..originating from the jorri and you will see that never has the chatu been called the tabla.
ikirtan 2 years ago
UNTIL this generation where even Pt Ravi Shankar believes that it is called a tabla.
ktkdrummer 2 years ago
Who cares about this generation? If Ravi Shankar Said you where a lalu would u say fine? Stick to the originals and youll get somewhere. The Way Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji Played The Jori Was Amazing
ikirtan 2 years ago
I appreciate your concern. As tempting as the offer is, I would still like to decide for myself what would and what would not "get me somewhere". Oh, if Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji said you were lalu, would you say fine?
