  • Wow really wastefull of decent part donor vehicles so much coulda been saved and reused

  • Interesting... they destroy these cars before the consumer can get their hands on them... yet Toyota's vehicles weren't when they were taking off and injuring/killing people???

  • @4:43 I guess this is what Mr. Slam does when he's not competing in Twisted Metal.

  • This goes back to all the frivolous lawsuits that judges should throw out but don't. If judges did their job rather than awarding seven-digit settlements to stupid people for doing stupid things, then these Mazdas would probably still be around today but Mazda chose to scrap them to avoid the possibility of a frivolous lawsuit down the road. And for those bashing America, Mazda is a JAPANESE company...they made the call so stop your pansy whining.

  • @deloreanman14 the call was made by the american Government who paid Mazda for all the cars crushed.. Please research before making announcements..

  • @lostin1999 - It was in the original C&D article that this video accompanies AND I worked for the company that stored the vehicles (Auto Warehousing) and deployed the airbags before they were taken and crushed. Mazda made the call and Mitsui OSK's insurance company paid it off. I can also tell you that 35 Mazdas were not crushed and they sit at AWC today (coordinates 45.627706,-122.738762). It's clear you don't know how business works so I'm going to stop arguing with you about this.

  • Y U Stupid ppl do this to EARTH??!

  • What a waste of resources. So much could be reused..

  • They wrecked the cars because they might have been damaged when the ship fell over. Mazda will not sell cars that might be damaged and maybe causing accidents for the people who buy them.

Although, they could have taken them apart to re-use the equipment, but then again I`m no car engineer so I can`t be sure why they decided to wreck them.

  • destroy fake mazda made in china

  • This is such a crap, on one side we have North America who is disposing brand new cars on other hand we have Pakistan where since the time first car has landed on streets has never gotten off.

  • Greatest con of all time this bullshit recycling of cars

Using the save the world notion just to save jobs in the automotive industry

    Perfectly good cars scrapped

Go to India and see what recycling means

  • Fuck you America. And, a Mazda 3 is the first car i want to start with..

  • @158158cow It is not up to America. Mazda decided to wreck the cars!

  • Should have sold them half price with a sighned waiver "as is" no exceptions or donated to needy people who use them to get jobs etc... such a waste.

  • A car has thousands of parts... why the fuck couldnt Mazda use it has new spare parts??? The most wastfull stupid thing i ever saw... nowdays everybody talks about ecology and recourses and then people do this shit... and we are in the 21 st century!!!

    How retarded civilization we are...

  • The second it demostrates is that mazda cars are very bad quality cars (they result damaged when they tilts... if your car tilts could be dangerous for your safety) Come on!!! So the warranty service should replace your car if it tilts, correction, the service is too bad than they prefer destroy the car than fix it... Stupid Americans and stupid society.

  • It only demostrates how stupid Americans are and why they are the major world resource wasters. Just think how many energy was used in the manufacturing of each car, for example the tires. why destroy the tires? tires doesn't even result affected by seawater, instead they inutilize them and convert it in garbage because an useless tires only can be garbage, it only can be shredded and become a carpet. If they where worried about cars safety then just a review and refurbish them and sell as used

  • theyre still better than my car i routinely drive salvage vehicles, i buy crashed carsfrom junkyards change a few parts pay a 53.00 inspection fee and go on my way, in ohio they dont check for safety, materials, or workmanship on rebuilt salvage vehicles, just stolen parts, have all your reciepts and it can be held together with ducctape and zipties i brought in my intrepid slapped together headlight glued in fender wired on, it passed flying colors, dont have to put the airbags back in either

  • Thats one ting that I love about this rotten country. We got money to burn allday everday. SICK

  • they could of used the cars for parts

  • I unloaded these cars very few were damaged the only fluid anyone saw leak out was some battery fluid, there were a few that broke free from lashings and had body damage and in the bottom of the ship there were some that had gotten water into them but it was a total waste, in fact the rumor was that the crew got sent back to China and that the captain was relieved of more than his job.

  • Why don't they just recycle the cars?

  • holy sh... that shredder is fast.

  • Such bullshit. This is what is wrong with society. Too fucking wasteful.

  • FACT; NONE OF THE CARS WHERE WATER DAMAGED, JUST VERY LIGHT PANAL DAMAGE, CRUSHING LIKE THIS, DRILLING THRU NEW TYRES ETC IS THE SILLIEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN!!!!!

  • Jesus....what a crying shame this was.

Strangely though....there are still some twenty of these Mazdas sitting at AWC in North Portland. Their airbags are NOT deployed and they have signs taped to the inside of the windshields saying 'HOLD - DO NOT SCRAP'. I checked a few out for myself (I work there part time) and they still smell new. And damn if I could find anything wrong with them. When I asked why they were still there, I couldn't get a straight answer from anybody.

  • Ha, People that want them to sell at half price or sell parts cheap. Like Mazda is sitting around saying You know what we need? 4703 Half price Mazdas with possible issues hurting resell and to compete with our full priced Mazdas. And it's not their cars anyway but the insurance companies.

    Hubiee got it right, below.

  • So sad , poor mazda3

  • 18812 tires.... THAT is a ton of work !!

  • I dont understand Mazda dont wont people to get hurt in one of the these cars but yet they will sell cars where the engines blow up and they wont even do anything about it that is stupid.

  • Comment removed

  • Oh my God. I know - the liability, but still, it hurts to watch this!

  • Man.... The mazda3 that I had specially ordered from the dealership was on either the ship before or after this accident.... Sucks that they couldn't salvage some of the non-safety items... But as everyone said before... It's too big of a liability to Mazda.

  • Simple:

Mazda does not want it his reputation getting damaged... therefore they claim these cars as insurance cases because they were confronted with salty air too long which might cause airbags not to open on impact and things like that. The Insurance comapony himself wants to make sure that mazda does not make any profit with these cars, therefore they have to be destroyed completly. Many schools and social institutions asked mazda for a car, they declined their afforts :(.

  • it all comes down to big money does whatever they want..

  • dude we is that? i need some of those lights for mine damn..

  • what a waste! has mazda never heard of SPARE PARTS!!!!!!

  • EVERYTHING would have had to be replaced

  • It's a risk, parts had been in the middle of the sea, corroding, for over a month, some were completely under water. They came from scrapped cars, so they don't qualify as new (so it needs a lot of paperwork to sell those parts) and as if it wasn't enough, replacing that car with a brand new one probably costs 3 to $5k to the company (They got the steel, the engineering, the ads, the machines to make them, just need to re-do the hand-labour which goes by a dollar per hour).

  • don't see why they had to mess up the rims

  • Seems like an unnessesary waste... but what do I know?

  • Mazda was worried because all those cars had been sitting at like a 60 degree angle for a few weeks. And they dont know what that could do to an air bag sensor, or to the components to the engine.

So they didnt want to be liable if someone gets killed in a car crash because the air bag didnt go off because the air bag sensor got messed up sitting at 60 degree angle.

They also didnt want to be liable if the car turned out to be a lemon.

Better to just crush the car, and not worry about it.

  • everytime i see it...just makes me sick....guess again..the insurence bayed out for all the cars..and probely mazda did not want that the cars go in use..cos there is a 1%of chance that some things on the cars may maufunction. in finland i saw how the toll crached brand new chricler C300's new vw golf's dodge ram's...and more..300cars in tottal...just what a waist of energy!...could atleast use the cars as parts.

  • What a waste! Couldn't they find something useful with these cars?

  • would have been smart to auction the cars off.

  • They could have done that but then there would have been the risk of the people that bought them getting hurt some how and the insurance issues that would arise from that. So to prove they were serious about the accident, Mazda decided to crush every single car.

  • they crush the car, melt down the metal, and make new parts, so yes they are making something useful with them, new cars

  • Sell them to china - very lax road safety standards and no paths for litigation. Oh well.

A bunch of dumb marketers made a mistake.

  • so wtf? they had to destroy these cars and lose all the money they invested. they couldn't use body panels, tires, or any of the rest of the car. seems like they could have used some of the parts at least couldn't they

  • dont you understand?

they get money from the insurance and they themselves want to make sure that mazda doesnt make a deal out of it so they want those cars to be destroyed. It's better than people getting hurt even if only one airbag would not work properly of all those cars' airbags in a crash.

  • The first Saturns manufactured were destroyed because the wrong kind of anti-feeze was used.

  • The first Saturns that were manufactured were destroyed because the wrong kind of anti-freeze was used in these cars.

  • Seems like extremely little damage to the body panels, if any. And they seem to be driveable, if the first car was anything to go by. Does someone smell an insurance scam? Lol.

  • its was salt water contact they were worried about for liability reasons

  • This is disturbingly similar to one those PETA videos.

  • Make sure you don't get a salvage one, lol.

  • But why destroy all those brand new parts. Just disassemble them and reuse of recycle what is good.

  • They recycled what the could. All the car bodies and everything is going to scrap metal places. A lot of it is going to be recycled and turned into something new.

  • guauuu que vaina tan jodida, me dolio, la verdad me dolio acaso los autos que estaban jodidos, eso es tener mucho dinero para desperdiciar.

Yo como fanaticos de los autos y de Mazda me parece que es un homicidio.

  • I don't see the reason for demolishing thousands of Mazdas that look new...

  • Mazda didnt want to take on the liability if one of these cars where to get into an accident and the airbag didnt deploy or some other defect from being at a 60 degree angle for so long.

  • Oh, becuase they all have water damage?

  • No because they were sitting at 60 degree angle for more then a month. They dont know what is good and what went wrong in those cars. Its safer to crush them all, then sell them used and have someone get into an accident and die because the airbag didnt go off.

I wouldnt want to take on that responsibility.

  • use it for spare parts

  • WHY ???

  • I'm sad... :-(

  • Very sad. I'll take MS3....and MX5 and a RX8 and a CX7. Thank you very much.

  • Hell, I would take one and sign a waver if mazda gave me one for free. they look perfectly fine!!!!

  • that has got to be one of the biggest waste of anything ever!

  • The holocaust truly pales in comparison to this.

  • dude.... not a cool comparo.

  • Not even close! dude there cars not ppl we crush cars every day

  • they could atleast sell the parts, like the headlamps, tail lights etc for cheap.

  • This makes me so sad!

  • really suprised at how well mazda dealt with this problem by keeping those cars out of the market.

  • it wouldnt be that bad if they were all mazda miatas

  • man this is because of the laws in north america complete bullshit, because some fat ass loser will probably sue so they have to distroy these cars, why couldnt they just sell the cars half price and have the customer sign papers explaining what happened to the cars and no to sue for those reasons. i wish i could have gotten on of those cars for half price.

  • all the cars had the airbags deployed so youd pay more to get that fixed

  • no they were deployed because they carry hazdou's material's if not pulled out.

  • @saweet999 i agree but on a difrent story think about all the trees that are cut down each year animals loose there home and everything its really sad.. but this is a lot worst than the trees being cut down. but i agree

  • wath was this

  • What was wrong with those cars to begin with?

  • they were on a boat that fell on it's side, so all the cars shifted, and were on their side for 2 weeks, fluids spilt oat battery acid, water got in their and stuff. they could sell them discount but someone could have a problem and sue mazda, so in order to save face mazda had to destroy a couple thousand of their cars. You can read more in the october 08 issue of C/D.

  • Thanks. I can't get Car and Driver where I am.

  • Is this spy video

  • I saw this in the car and driver mag...crazy

  • Crazy, how do you tip over a huge ship? I wish they had that video.

  • When a ship comes into US waters it has to dump the ballast water it took on outside the US waters, and then pick up water inside the US. Its a rule. But the ballast system messed up on the ship, and it was unbalanced and it tilted over.
