  • I thought it was kind of twisted how people actually poked him with their feet before moving on.

  • My guess is that less people cared since they were students.

Their first reaction is probably to check if it's a prank.

    And some spotted the camera.

But i'm not ruling out the bystander effect.

Although i think i would check him out, i can't be sure.

  • We are robots who cannot think of others.

  • Finally, someone helped...a lil. It was probably a mom.

  • I think this experiment was wrong, I think you focused on the wrong audience group, what you should have done was do this in a station or busy area, with many different groups of people, teenagers can't be bothered... Its also wrong to summarise a Student age group as society, it is a good test but take into account other things

  • It so simple: All thinks! no i dont need to do anything, some one else will.

The next thinks, no i don't need to do anything, some one else will call ambulance.

It's the same as you play a multiplayer Team game.

You think some one else will defend or attack.

Basic he could be lying in a pool of blood and we get a same effect losing vital seconds.

    The bystander effect

  • Umm im pretty sure they saw you holding the camera. Fail

  • Comment removed

  • What if he was actually dead?

  • They're sick, it's the reason why you get that kid in school that hates everyone.

You know that kid, the one sick of the sick social order in life.

This is a perfect example, it's fake all fucking fake.

Just a face, a farce, a lie. NOTHING.

You may meet one or two people in your whole life who don't apply to it.

    Cherish them.

It's also the reason why school shooting happen, this society is sick.

Some take it pretty far when they realize this.

I can't wait to see it all go.

  • shocking experiment just goes to show how people who are unsure on how to act in a situation like this, tend to look to others for guidence and as all are just walking past what do others do? excatly walk on! we need more non conformists lol

  • People are just scared. I would be if someone was suddenly lying on the ground, I'd think twice before I approach that person lol.

  • It's only because the chick that stopped wasn't a retarded teenager.

  • DID SOMEONE JUST TAKE A PICTURE???

  • Comment removed

  • He doent need help ...he is sLeeping !

  • Look, I know that this is a really easy-to-do social experiment, but that doesn't mean it's as easy as "I'll bring my camera and when middle school lets out I'll film you looking hurt and no one will help, aren't we just little psychologist!"

I saw people looking and smiling at the person holding the camera, if people SEE you filming him laying there it taints the results.

  • I would have done the same as everyone else here... it's after school, dude probably got caught lippin' off to the wrong dude.

  • people realised it was fake

  • @daaa37 I agree. I will always help if I can. Always.

  • I think a lot of this shit has to do with the propping up of the "I don't give a fuck about anyone but myself" culture in this country, and also the fact that people have been spoiled on the antics of reality TV and stupid internet videos where assholes do things like this just to prank and scare people. This stuff is so prevalent in American culture these days that hit has changed the way people think and made people into robots. And sometimes I wonder, if that was the plan all along.

  • @CyberSpectrumND It's not just your country. The bystander effect counts everywhere where there are large populations. The first experiment I've seen in my police academy studies was in england.

  • hahahaha you white bastards having ago at people in china, go and fuck yourselves!!!

  • My Soc teacher sent me here.

  • fuckin strange creatures

  • and not a fuck was given that day

  • they can see the camera, they even smile at it. pretty sure that effects the experiment.

  • what school is this? the guys are cute >.<

  • At least he was not robbed

  • very very sad we have no cristians here, it's not about human-kind, it's about modern or postmodern piggy insensibility

  • @no2religions

Agreed. Made me a little sick actually seeing the guy's face like it was a joke to him.

  • My favourite part is where the kid tries to kick his foot on the way by. Someone needs therapy...

  • Wow that's really cool!

  • that guy is just REALLY good at planking

  • @56..... The bloke even attempts to kick him!

  • i dont even believe in (A) god.

    but o my god.

how many just walked by? i wasent keeping track i thought one might have help atleast most half way through but beginning to end people just walked by, none even told a teacher because they would have flew down the hall. that would smell of law suit if no one came and knew.

  • omg

  • wow

  • this reminds me of NYU students and the stuck up bitches were more concerned with their cell phones than another human being

  • no joke this same shit happended in my school kid got nailed in the nuts and passed out and ignored by everyone until a teacher showed up this ifs fucking rediculous

  • This wouldn't have happened at my High School, but that's because I live in a small town where people aren't completely insane yet. No one has anything better to do where I live anyway, lol.

  • lmao. damn they just walk right over him! thats cold...

  • it's only cuz he is dressed like L and every1 thinks that Kira killed him

  • /watch?v=OSsPfbup0ac&feature=related

    It happens universally

  • I want to see a bystander effect done in the UK, i just can't imagine this happening on my street - Disgraceful.

  • what a disgrace people can be

  • Awhh man..makes me feel like a bad person inside..

  • Did you guys see that fatty kick the dude at 0:57?

  • Humans are sickly creatures - they create a God to forgive their soulless natures.

  • How is this possible?

  • it seems that most of the people saw that you had a camera.. maybe they knew it wasnt real? lets hope so...

  • 1 person in 2 minutes wow poeple do care with all those kids walking by

  • Its a High or Middle school....Most people would think its just a goof.

  • @howlbigbadwolf no but it is really a bystander effect. It is real. People just do not give a damn about everything.

  • It's cool just walk along, Jerome is just taking a nap in the middle of the walk way right?

  • i can understand that people would have just thought it was a joke

  • That's funny how people are actually walking around him-being sure not to step on him... haha "Sorry man"- I won't help you up BUT --i won't step on you either. ---you figure this looks like a jr.high or h.s. ---word probably got around pretty quick that an experiment of this sort would be taking place..... on the other hand --that looked like me last weekend after an all nighter

  • Could you make another video where it's a girl in need of help instead of a male? I bet you all the money in the world she'd get helped faster than him...

  • This is why I have no faith in humanity. Good people are the vast minority.

  • I know that the person that helped was a teacher but did you notice that she was the oldest person to consider offering help?

  • This is unreal but in society today there's alot more risks invovled in helping people who appear injured. For example, with the rise in people carrying knives, syringes and even guns you have no idea what potential risks there could be to your safety as a helper. Also, i've been verbally abused by others when I've tried to help in the past so forgive me for being skeptical!

  • Comment removed

  • Next time when real things happen people will think ere's camera hidden

    n walk off...

or maybe people will help so dat ey will get famous?

  • I've done this b4! andno one helped!

  • I would have just assumed the kid was being an idiot and sleeping on the floor..

  • I HOPE SOMONES OPENS IN UR SCHOOL ASSSES!!!

  • I think that if bystanders are standing in the hallway longer they will be more likely to go and help as time continues and they see no difference. But every person that walks by doesn't expect him to be there for another 5 minutes or so... They all think someone will help soon... but if one hesitates and stares, then eventually he or she will help. That's why it's easy to watch this video and say you will help, because you've stared at it for a good minute.

  • The worst thing about this video, is that if that teacher hadn't had an obligation to help that guy, there's every chance that she wouldn't have either.

  • Their kids what do you expect, they don't give a crap, but I can assure you I would be suprised to see someone laying on the floor like that and would make sure the person was ok.

  • The teacher did something because she was outside of the group of students; therefore she was not one of the sheep.

  • The one that DID help was the teacher, the bystander effect didn´t apply to her because she has the social override to be an example for the students, if it were nother place out of the school, she most likely wouldn´t have helped

  • @superbarajaso your right, she does this because she is an authority figure, which brings about the aspect of personal responsibility for the child on the ground. If it was outside of that school she more than likely would not have helped since there would be no responsibility on her part thus the bystander effect would take effect. however is someone were to prime them self to acknowledge this pattern of behavior the bystander effect would be non existent for them, so spread the word

  • @VinceFSU07

    advantages of studying psychology XD

  • @superbarajaso agreed haha

  • That's why i believe that Bin Laden is living somewhere in the US. Who knows maybe in one of those hotels near the white house, he probably even eats in the white house cafetaria.

  • They're just like " O its just a dead person just leave to the FBI they'll clean up the body" It's like wht the H*** do someth'in bout it

  • They're just like " O its just a dead person just leave to the FBI they'll clean up the body" It's like wht the hell do someth'in bout it

  • what ass holes

  • @greengirl2478 this social experiment deals with two main factors (there are 4 i believe, wanna save some space) pluralistic ignorance is when people in ambiguous situations turn to view others reaction to determine if the situation is an emergency and mistake the stimuli(i.e. person on floor) as something innocuous, and since there is no single bystander there is no strong feeling of personal responsibility for others to help, which is called diffusion of responsibility. Hence, bystander effect

  • @greengirl2478 take no offense to this but you would more than likely do the same thing, or have previously done the same thing as those in the video. This deals more so with external factors and group dynamics as oppose to internal, so for all we know the people who walked by the kid on the ground could be genuinely good people as are you for all i know.

  • whay ass holes!

  • Some douche kicked him at 1:22

  • Collage rule

Student - U dont know him so dont help him

Teacher - Its my responsible to care about him ?

Security - Its my job so i have to do this !

  • Surprised no one ran out the door as soon as they walked in, thinking there might possibly be a gunman somewhere in the building..........with a silencer.....and......other people are at risk......yeah........because of the "bystander effect" IDK

  • AT LAST! i have found the video! That person on the ground is me.... no lie. this happened in the last week of school. the head of security yelled at me "YOU THINK THIS IS A JOKE?! I HAD TO CALL MY ENTIRE SECURITY STAFF!" he took my arm and dragged me to the office in humiliation and then i looked up at Wilmer (cameraman) and this nigga dipped! haha i was like WTF?!?..... he ended up helping me and we both got in trouble and almost suspended for the rest of the school year.all in all, teens suck

  • @GMRox i would of done something i would of called the teachers or tryed to wake you up

  • @GMRox

    U have sum balls lol.

  • @GMRox This is an experiment i am planning to do for my psychology dissertation. However i have to get ethical approval and can't have someone lying on the floor or anything too over the top in case people call the police. one idea i have is just to have people drop papers and see if anyone helps. I need another more dramatic idea that doesn't involve blood or anything, any idea? :D

  • @CutenessFairy

That is actually a great idea. you should carry lots of papers so that it becomes extremely obvious that you could use some help rather than have people think you can pick them up easily and not make them feel too altruistic. good luck!

  • @CutenessFairy Accidentally drop a suitcase full of dollar bills, see how many people are willing to help you pick it up.

  • Fuck teens, they are so fucking selfish and take life so fucking casually

  • @jalejalemmt Not just teens, humans in general. Check out the Kitty Genovese case, where she was stabbed to death but yelled for help several times. EVERYONE in the entire block that heard her believed that the other neighbor/person was gonna call. Not one of the 38 witnesses called.

    :(

  • Uh, Isn't It Obvious That its Fake, Cause A Lot Of Them Looked Up At The Vid.

  • @BzzFest lol, i didnt noticed it, but after i read your comment. i agree that they keep looking at the video, hahah. and the camera keeps on moving, and at 0:16-18 he moved, and i bet someone sees it, the one who was on the left side near him might have witness it, at 1:00 the girl high five to whoever was still there and saw it. the camera tries to hide whoever was in there at 0:34-38 and focus it to the guy.

  • @mucik Yup Lol.

  • dude, you were so obvious when you were filming it, everyone could tell it was a joke.

  • Its amazing the way they just look at him and do nothing, didi they think it was a joke or something?

  • Hey Wilmerexing, u shud've have carried out the experiment ,without letting the onlookers know that the person is under surveillance, cause a few looked at the camera . can this point make a difference, of not showing the people the camera?

  • @amannvig That would be a good point, but I honestly do not think too many people saw the camera. I think it was just the two kids who walked out together at 0:36

  • @Wilmerexing i think , things (including the human brain) are much more convoluted than most of the entities of our species think they are.

  • The one person that actually does stop to help os a fucking teacher. Christ

I'm a 14 year old girl, and I would NEVEr do something like that. If someone drops something, I pikc it up for them if possible. If someone falls, I try to help them up (whilst holding back laughter, sometimes). And if someone appears to be unconscious on a concrete floor, I'D DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT FOR FUCKS SAKE

  • The bystander effect is basically based on the fear on 'what others may say'. That is the reason why nobody does shit. Each one of these fuckers KNOW something is wrong but nobody is doing something so they are all like: 'ok, it must be fine'. C'mon people! wake up! GET THE FUCK INVOLVED!!!

  • For the experiments sake I hope no one saw him move his foot XD

  • He's in a pretty awkward position too, like he just collapsed.

  • It's certainly interesting how these people react and obviously do demonstrate the bystander effect, However, i aggree with hipster420.. it's age specific and so can't be generaise.

  • i wonder which high school is this?

  • UNfortunately this is how it is. Selfishness. But if it turns out that something serious happened to the boy, and a news crew came out to cover the story....alll of a sudden people will swarm telling about their wonderful attempt to save this poor victim! I've seen it happen. No one cares unless they can gain from the situation somehow. Just my opinion.

  • its also interesting how there are no teachers around.

  • The bystander effect: Demonstrating how useless people are in a crisis

  • These highschool or middle schoolers are conditioned to ignroe such conflicts. If you were still in school, you'd see that they just stand there cheering on a fight.

i wasn't there, but a male was beating up a female and people just stood there.

She was screaming for help, and 5 mins later her friend came. Only if I was there..

  • this is a sad commentary on humanity.

  • There is another video on the bystander effect in which a little girl seems to be getting kidnapped. It's on the street and many different age groups are involved. Even more, the girl is clearly saying "You're not my dad. Someone, please help."

  • Add alittle blood and people might just poke the body.

  • Reminds me of Metalocalypse:

"Remember, Death is an everyday part of the workplace, so if you see a dead body, just ring your death bell."

    Anyone remember that?

  • 0:37 they sussed you out haah

  • This Shit pisses me off so much!

  • yeah i tried to put myself as one of those guys but the more ppl that came out the less involved i got becuase it would seem embarrasing.lol i thought only selfish ppl would do the effect but its true anyone would do it no mater who u are

  • few weeks ago a guy died from bleeding to death on the streets because of this. There are video tapes caught by cameras of it.

  • it just looked like someone had a bit too much to drink...

  • I counted almost 50 people that walked by and did nothing. but then again high schoolers dont give a shit about anything exept when they can loose their verginaty.

  • This experiment was limited to an age group ie..high school. The older people get the more compassion they seem to acquire.

  • @Hipster420 I think thats an interesting point

  • @Wilmerexing youth are scum these days, selfish as fuck, plain and simple.

  • @Wilmerexing This experiment has been repeated in many locations with various age and socio-economic groups and the effect remains the same regardless of age. This experiment was carried out in London in the financial district with a male and then female actor playing the victim. They found that people, young and old, walked around the victims when they were dressed in casual, but not unkempt clothes, but when the victim dressed in a suit typical of the financial district, people offered help.

  • @Hipster420 that's not exactly true, but you do have a point. you see when you're in your teens, early adulthood and adulthood, you are thinking about nothing but yourself. Kids, mature adults, and elders tedn to be more compassionate. Kids because they haven't been "tainted", mature adultsand elders, because they have already "been there and done that", they would want people to do the same for them, and they are well... mature, so to speak. ^^U

  • @Hipster420

What do you mean? I suggest you watch other bystander videos where only adults are shown. shoot man, when I'm with my mom on the train in nyc the adults ignore those in need of help. You've got another thing coming.

  • @Hipster420 The frightening thing is, that's not entirely accurate. The Bystander Effect holds veracity in any age group... which, is discomforting. The diffusion of responsibility is something that happens in any group of people.

  • @Hipster420

pardon me? the older they get, the more compassion??

Please, please watch "the bystander effect" by coolpsychologist

Please, please, also watch as many episodes as u can on American TV programme "what would you do?"

ESPECIALLY: Aiding the Fallen - What Would you Do? Linda Hamilton Heroine-Ayudando al Caido

  • @Hipster420 interesting, but so is Avatar..it doesn't mean it's based on truth. Time and time again, this has proven to be a fact in all age groups, in all regions of the world. People have been murdered in public, died of natural causes all because no one intervened and helped. When in large numbers, compassion is irrelevant.

  • @ncPsychosis We are all products of our environments. So your saying that you would not help a person in need if others in the area were not? I believe a certain amount of compassion is innate but it's mostly a learned behavior... Maybe you were just raised in a very hostile environment...Intelligence and rational should be able to override the "herd instinct"....But most people live their lives with fear as the main catalyst of their existence.

  • @Hipster420 well depend most if the people are in their group i think, please watch the related video by coolpsycologist ---->

  • @Hipster420 Ummm no. Countless experiments like this have been done. Age groups don't appear to be a factor, I wish it was true though believe me.

  • @Hipster420 I think that while we would all like to believe that compassion is something we acquire with age, I do not believe this is true. To be completely honest by the time you reach the "adult" years you have so much going on with your own life and busy "fast food lifestyle" that it's even easier to walk away. If you watch some of the other videos on the Bystander effects, some a little more professionally done - although this one exhibits the basic idea nicely- PART 1

  • @Hipster420 then you'll see that most of them are done in areas where the adults are the first to ignore and walk away, whereas if there are any younger children around THEY are the first to turn a head. It's scary but happens all the time.. people are just too consumed in their own life.. sadly the fact that they're high school students, in my opinion has nothing to do with the lack of compassion :(

  • @Hipster420 This does not seem to be true, if you check other Bystander-experiments in other groups you notice that agegroup doesnt seem to matter at all.

In this case none of the students are helping because they are part of the "student-group"; and the group walks by; therefor every student who belongs to this group of people follow their group, and does nothing.

Thats why this experiment is more effectful the more people of the same group there are. The peerpreasure to walk by increase.

  • @marcuslind90

But! There are those who are cool like me, who marches to his own drum.

  • This is High School , these kids are used to seeing people passed out on the ground, if they stopped to question/help every passed out person they came upon they would never get to class....You should have held the experiment in a grocery store or shopping mall.

  • Cypress Bay High School FR THE LOSS!!

  • @ArticunoMortis This experiment portrays trends. Its not something that happens only in certain areas. Its something that would happen in any society, whether its my high school, your high school, or pretty much anywhere.

  • @Wilmerexing lol i know people that go to cypress bay i go to plantataion

  • nao duvido k aconteça algo parecido se fosse serio, mas esta montagem esta mto ma, ve-se logo k ele esta fingindo e ainda por cima numa escola de miudagem... gostava k a experiencia fosse mais realista

  • some of them may have seen the camera? but no you're right, I might try this experiment some time you know, it's interesting how people can just ignore things like that, what if he was actually unconscious? lol

and according to the bystander effect the more people present the less chances you get help so I'm not surprised that a high school would be like this

  • yeah. people are dicks

  • nice

  • Unfortunately, this is an incredibly accurate portrayal of society :(

    Very interesting social experiment!

  • as you see closely at their faces, they're smiling as if it was some joke

  • -sigh- our society sucks ass

  • @alyangelallstar not with ppl like u who know it sucks

  • @alyangelallstar all societies

  • @alyangelallstar I mean most of them, i don't know all

  • @ethostvchannel yupp, unfortunately :( most societies....

  • he had his head on his forearm like he was sleeping

  • was this for a school project..... people really don't get it i see what your getting at

  • If he was realy hurt, he would be soooo dead.

  • lol he got pownt!!!

  • WTF? Of course they saw the camera. Am I the only person who goes to a school with cameras? Guess they just don't trust me...

  • oh well sleeping on the floors in this school must be the norm

  • wtf is this world coming to !! no body helped !!! what kind of bastards are they !

  • wow this is seriously messed up

  • future experiments should involve killing any bystanders in a public area and see if anyone cares. it should work...

  • Cool video, haha hi five to that guy that was lying on the ground, I would be scared people would walk on me

  • The worst place outside of a prison yard is a school area of any kind. Weakness or being hurt is rewarded with laughter and possibly causing more harm to a person in trouble. Nothing that happens in a high school that shows weakness is shown mercy by and large. I really think a person is actually safer in a prison yard than a school yard.

  • HEY FAILED Experoment i can see people lookin in the camera

  • they all saw the camera...they looked up...there is no way that this would ever happen at the school i went too...people would have been crowded around

  • people just thought a drunk guy was sleeping. if he had bled, their reaction would have been different

  • @fffinol Dude, this is at a high school. They didn't think he was drunk

  • whatever, they thought a jerk was sleeping

  • lol, I don't think you understand. This is a regular High school. Students dont just go to the front enterance at the ring of the last bell and lay down to go to sleep.

  • some jerks do.

  • @Wilmerexing actually at cypress people do that i mean i sleep on the grass and in front of guidance all the time probably one of the most chill high schools in the nation.

  • @fffinol LOL...

  • We staged a fight and someone getting beat up to test this effect out. Nobody cared. They in fact walked THROUGH the fight, only moving their head to avoid punches.

    Amazing.

  • -.- rly he could of had a serizure and passout from it

and no one would even help him.

    this is sad

even tho it was a experament

  • but it was a school. these things generally happen in schools.

if they see someone just lying on the floor they wud assume it was a joke unless he looked seriously injured.
