I enjoy the original, but as you can see by my username, I'm more of a big band man. So I completely agree with you, being a trumet player and Maynard lover, that Maynard's does indeed blow this out of the water.

@Sford0dude5 dude...harvey mason was TIGHT. count basie did the same with his stuff...the tunes were simple, but one note could sound like a work of genius depending on how it's played. don't knock the drum part because it LOOKS simple. c'mon :c)

74', this is before Midi/Sequencers etc, so it has to be a tape loop bass line.
Nowadays we can play about with pushing and pulling a beat at will.
This is a pioneering peice of music.
