i guess what i was commenting on was Mariah's creativity. she makes musical lines with her melisma. her peers are Aretha and Ella. the other showboat in a much more stop and start kind of way, not creating a crafted vocal.

After watching your deconstruction, I happened to watch Becky Gulsvig perform Legally Blonde Remix (youtube) and she riffs up the scale on style in "I'm going back in my style." I loved it, and I don't think I would have noticed otherwise.

Seth, I absolutely LOOOOOVE what you do, and I find that these are the sort of crazy things I obsess about myself.

About these upward riffs: they're all based on the pentatonic scale (do re mi sol la and any combination thereof). Mariah loves this riff...toward the end of "One Sweet Day", she and one of the Boyz II Men guys sing the words "I know, I know together" on the exact same melody (sol la do re mi). I loves me some pentatonic riffing!!!

Seth you are a-mah-zing for sure. I have watched your Deconstructing Babs video too many times to count. I remember my first belting experience (of course I didn't know there was a name for it)! It was Ellen Greene singing "Suddenly Seymour" in "Little Shop".  I was so young and amazed by the sound of her voice. I would love to hear your take on the Emily and Alice. Especially from their concert performance at Town Hall. Alice belts the hell out of a few songs on that disc.
