I watched this, would some kind soul please explain to me wht the f***ing hell its supposed to be about ?
Going to watch it again though because didn't realize it was filmed in some place in Russia where a container or plutonium blew up in the fifties....probably what Northern Japan is going to end up looking like very very soon.
So... thank God Tarkovsky is dead, because I feel like an Ass now! I researched the film and it turns out that the original film was destroyed and had to be completely redone on a much lower budget. There was probably not enough funding to start deleting scenes and replacing them, especially when the lighting was being perfected like this and shots (on average) are really long and slow. Either way the film among the Greatest! I wonder just how different the original was? Guess we'll never know!
If you guys don't know what I'm talking about, watch the film again and look for it. There are many times when it is obviously required that the actor in the scene looks into the camera and then there are the painfully obvious fuck ups! I wonder why I'm the first person on here to point that out. I think you all may be blinded by your love for this film. I am nearly blind, but I must have seen a light somewhere.

This film is brilliant and way ahead of its time but ONE thing that bothers this SHIT out of me is how some of the actors occasionally made eye contact with the camera when they obviously should not have. I will never understand why those scenes were not edited out. I just try to blink longer than normal when I know those scenes are coming. I'm lying to myself so that I don't think negative thoughts about this movie. :/
"Stalker" and "Donnie Darko" both prove you can make an incredible plot-driven science fiction story without all the CGI and crap associated with movies like "Avatar".
@ongolos planet got disturbed by alliens but noone seen them they only shoot down some strange things all over the world and those places became locked for people becouse physic rules dont work there those places have paranormal traps and allient machines everywhere which are killing ppl by different way and ppl called STALKERS started going in that locations to collect those machines and sell them to scientists all over the world and only a few stalkers got into the heart of that place
@chistr1 WOW thats the same like all my S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games except the aliens part, instead in the game its artifacts.. and they sell artifacts to the scientists to get rich or answers in life!
@MrCrispian this was made by Tarkovskii and has nothing associated with the book since even tho authors of the book helped him make it but he compleately changed it
at 2:09 i presume that is couple years during wwii i see soviet field gun and t34 and panzer or tiger on t34 i see this was battle ground before chernobyl disaster
@ukrainesov21 In youtube, you can first upload the video file which does not contain subtitles, and then add subtitles separately. This is how it was done here.
@ukrainesov21 it is a text file which is upload after uploading the video file, (you can probably add maually as well) I do not remember which formats of subtitles are supported, but it should be explained in manual in youtube
To even "get" the movie you need to read the book first . Its like the wester fim Dune if you arent familiar whit the book the film will make little sence to you .
@141target i criticized the movie, and i get 5 identical comments by douchebags who think they know everything about my taste in movies because i thought this one was boring. you are simpletonfags lol
yeh sure... lets go with that.. Despite being made in 1979 long before PC/PC gaming were even thought of.. Sure its a movie bout the game.. The games make great publicity for the movie tho..
On a side note.. Its scarily prophetic.. only 7 years later would Chernobyl occur creating such a zone like the one in the movie..
@Kyesukemaru no need to get smart but like i dident know when it was made geez and like i dont think Chernobyl was the only place the stalkers where mate take a look at the street fighter movie NONE of the real chars from game so ya cya
@egdqv13234 yes, the film was made after a book "roadside picnic". The book itself took the theme of the sone from another (smaller)nuclear accident that happened years before
@amurtimur i love stalker more than any game ever made, i still wait for lost alpha to come out! but what i dont understand is, why is everyone like this old film so mutch? i mean yeah it got some stalker fealing its beutiful) but there is no action no shoot out or anything = / thats kaind of boring...
People should watch this instead of stupid American action movies. This is the true work of art. I was so amazed that I bought it for quite enormous price, because it's hard to get in my country. I won't ever regret it though. This film makes you think of all these things around us - art, science, existence, nature and even human soul and feelings. Music used there gives a strange feeling. Something between happiness and sadness, at least for me. One of the very best films ever made.
@Psuedoreality Nope. It's more psychological. It deals with themes of faith, hope, and how different people deal with and view existence. I can completely identify with The Stalker in this movie. He's described as "a bumbler" by his own wife. The Writer describes him as "God's fool." And there's a part where he says "my happiness, my freedom, my self-respect are all in the Zone."
@IggyHazard Sounds like an interesting movie. I've heard it's based on the book Roadside Picnic, have you read it? I'm thinking about reading it before watching the film.
@Psuedoreality The movie 'Stalker' wasn't based on 'Roadside Picnic', but might have been partially inspired by it. The game 'STALKER' was inspired by both.
Andrei Tarkowski and the Strugazki brothers worked together for this one. Stalker is said to be based on the 3rd chapter of roadside picnic, but i never read that book so i'm not sure (i will read it though)
@IggyHazard Even though the game Stalker is based on the movie and the book. In the credits isn't said mentioned this. Nobody knows why. But i think it isn't very nice from the part of GSC.
It is very much like SOLARIS, which he also did before he made STALKER. Tarkovsky was a true genuis on USSR along with Sergei Eisenstein. I have seen this film before and it is on my top 5 best (but-favorite) Tarkovsky film list as #3. Have you seen his other films beside this one? If so, rock on. If not, watch: ANDREI RUBLEV, NOSTALGHIA, THE SACRIFICE, & SOLARIS (which are still on my list I emntioned earlier).
I know its not an adaptation of the video game, but if it was THiS is how a video game adaptation should be. Atmospheric, character centric, introducing a brand new world while remaining grounded in the real one. It doesn't need CGI or 3D to draw you in :)
@SunStealer1 Actually Tarkovsky used sci fi genre, as politically less controlled in soviet regime, to express his personal spiritual beliefs. He was always a very religious author.
zona :)
