@Hi199510 -- Total cooking time is about 45 minutes. I usually just pour the eggs over the meat and potatoes, and I don't stir it unless the charcoal is getting cold and it's not cooking to the point where the eggs are setting up.
@ofdiscordia -- It's a "Dutch oven". You can find them in the camping section at Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods, Gander Mountain, etc. I think that most of the ones I've seen are made by a company called Lodge.
@astrnomr Yes I knew it was a dutch oven, most of them I've seen don't look like that though, it's more like a cast iron pot with a lid and the handle has a bent spot to hang it over a campfire, I'll check your stores you listed though, that's a start for me :) thanks
@astrnomr Oh I suppose I should explain what I was asking exactly, it's the recessed lid that threw me off, I'm not used to seeing the charcoal on top, the ones I've seen had curved lids and you couldn't do that, with the exception of another I saw on here that had the same lid and the person using it had a metal spatula with a hook on it's handle to lift the lid off of it.
@theboss31423 -- You can add them in with the potatoes and meat. If you start out with a bag of hash brown's O'Brien, the onions and peppers are already prepared for you.
Counting Coals? Simpler to use the Dwindle Ring Method that has been proven more precise by many users. No rotation is then needed as the hot spots in the center are eliminated. Prewarming an oven is fine sometimes, but not needed for Mountain man. Frozen hash browns, but why not set them out the night before or better yet use the refrigerated kind?
Nicely done gentlemen. How long would you say the entire process took to cook? Looks tremendous, I think I will try this one morning at deer camp 2010!
@6t7gatore -- I usually rotate the Dutch oven (with the lid on) one quarter turn. Then I rotate just the lid another quarter turn. So, the oven is rotating relative to the coals below, and the lid is rotating relative to the oven itself, so the heat is not always in the same place.
looked great! I love watching these types of vids when im relaxing at night and i fix a pot pie or something and watch the vid and eat ! In limited quantities its a great get away!! Thanks for posting. You did a great job. OHHH and cabritorsss your comment .... fucking sucked. Keep it real? who says that shit. you just showed what a retard you are. Dutch oven is a cooking tool Not just for the woods. Dumbass.
If you use briquets instead of campfire coals,it's easier to regulate temperatures. People who cook with dutch ovens a lot have the temperature regulation down to a pretty exact science, based on the size of the oven and the number of briquets.
Lazy slob that I am,I use coals out of the campfire, and pretty much guess at the temp. I figure if the people you're feeding are hungry enough, there won't be any complaints. :)
How long did it all take to cook and did you stir the eggs in to the potatos and sausage?

This is probably the first time I've seen anyone cook with a prybar, lol.
Can you tell me the name of this brand of oven? I've had this recipe before but cooked in an electric oven with tater tots in a casserole dish.

@camaroon4me -- Depends on the size of the Dutch oven and how much charcoal you use, but it should be done in about 35-45 minutes.

you can add damn near anything you want to mtn man breakfast. mushrooms, diced ham, bacon, bratwurst, peppers and onions...
personally I like dumping parmesan cheese into the eggs when I beat them and use the sharpest cheddar I can get my hands on
based on the chimney and grill being brand new and being a cub master, congrats. You've headed down a long and rewarding road.
hey cabitrorsss, sorry your gender reassignment surgery was botched. I hope your sister's herpes clears up.

ya gotta rotate the oven and the lid in opposite directions, otherwise the heat never changes.

Take the # of the DO x2 and that about how many you will need. So a #12 needs 24 bricketts. #12 is the official BSA DO size.

How do you know how many coals to use for heat? trial and error or is there a spread sheet on the web?

why would you use charcoal instead of real wood
