@natedasaxman24: I hear you so it really depends on your needs. If you want a drum machine with some solid sounds in it already...I hear a lot of cats complaining about the stock MPC sounds, but a used MPC500 is a damn good second option.
Seriously, best investment I've ever got. I play drums myself and let alone for the beats and different sounds, looping different audio samples under the "1 shot" category is awesome.
No. It has a set bank of very good quality sounds. You cannot add any more and it does not sample. There is no USB or SD or Smart Media Connection. You can MIDI dump using MIDI OX or something similar that will support SYS EX transmissions.
Hey, just wanted to let everyone know I've left Open Labs and started a new company called Music Computing. Check out the new gear at Music Computing or click the link below for videos. - Thanks, Victor Wong
Aside from the non-answer of "You can make anything with anything, if you process it right" If you can make patterns from scratch than anything will work. Electronic Dance music of all sorts= KORG electribes. Glitch and Stitch= Elektron Drum Machines. For the 'SOUND' of the different genres, I would consider processing the sounds with dirty effect boxes and guitar pedals.
Drum Machines in 2010 are an antiquated technology, there is simply no reason to own one nowadays. Get a USB pad and sequence it with Reason; start sampling sounds from the internet and do all this for $100 cheap.
Akai has discontinued this product anyway...I presume-
@SixOneCynic - XR20 is more than meets the eye. Simple to use, has a steep learning curve to use it WELL. Anyone can just flip something on run through a few presets and make an opinion. XR20 is great for people who want to make beats and not worry about making/organizing samples.
RE: "antiquated technology", I use a Roland JD800 and '84 Sequential Drumtraks 8 bit drum machine along with an XR20 to make my beats. Alot of producers/DJs like Howie B still use drum machines live & in the studio.
@MrBuddaha maybe. in akai site you can't read nothing about that... seems that you can't plug it to your pc to load some samples. but it has an aux input, so it might be able to link with a turntable.
the xr20 is pretty dope for composing beats, the drum kits are amazing especially the kicks. This would be a perect combonation with an mpc500,that way u have sick drum loops with whatever sample's ur working with
@KanyeisBest815 why fuck techno? I listen to everything even if when I get to producing I'll focus more on a hiphop sound. It takes a lot of skill to make a good techno song.
you can loop anything you play for as many measures as you want... You can also plug MIDI into and even bend the pitches of the preset synth instruments.. By itself it is an ok station for beats but with a few more instruments(keyboard, guitar etc..) you can really come up with some good stuff.
Most keyboards can do the same as this - and more. I know a keyboard may be off putting to someone looking to sequence, but it would be more cost effective.
I want the MPC 1000, but the price seems very high.
i want to buy this machine just for drums but im not sure if its good or not and how do i export the song or can i just loop the drums and put it on cubase or another senquencer to mix and add like vsti and stuff???
it has no usb out ... so youd have to solo and bounce each instrument to a track and then line them up with the preroll click. pretty annoying.. idk if I need the hassle.
Anyone interested in this should probably buy a used mpc 1000 instead. It is just a lot more versatile. It's really easy to load premade samples, especially with a USB cable and you have the option of making your own samples, instead of being confined to presets. The XR20 is a good drum machine, but you can't really make a whole track on it like you can on an mpc.
I'm still trying to figure out the purpose of this? Why is Akai trying to make a stand alone drum machine? i mean... presets... gross.. my vote... Epic Fail on akai's part. Stick to the MPC line, you've let a lot go there already, you works' cut out to get it back to the good old days. :)
I don't know where everyone is getting their price conversions, but the US price for this thing will be under $300, it's going to be listed as $299-which IMO is a great price for what it does.
This is $500, you could buy a new kork ESX-1 for that, and not only change the preset sounds, but sample your own sounds into the box. You can even record real time knob movements, this is for someone who wants a mpc but cannot afford it. I would rather buy a roland sp-404 or boss sp-303.
You could get a LOT of things on the used market that would smoke this thing for that kind of money, from a used MPC to a rack sampler+sequencer to workstation synths. Akai is nuts if this is priced 500USD street.
This thing is $500 bucks, for that you could buy a Korg ESX-1 NEW and not only change the preset sounds, but sample your own sounds into the groovebox. You could also buy a boss sp-303 for $200 + on ebay and do the same things.
