I've seen this and was a little disappointed in all honesty. I won't spoil how he actually booked the Invasion because it's fucking tremendous and worth watching, but he actually uses too many guys who were big in the NWA and were finished by the time the angle happened. Jim's knowledge of WCW after he left the promotion isn't too great. I would recommend it as a rental.
@Dudeamis Ric cuts a worked shoot promo saying "thats fine vince you can job me out, but wrestling is a dangerous business and accidents happen...Wouldn't it be a shame if one of your guys broke a leg...or a neck"
the whole "Guest Booker" segment can be found on Justin TV. It begins with his rant about hardcore wrestling but goes all the way through how Corny would re-book the Invasion
My understanding is that Vince bought WCW at a last minute fire sale. If that is in fact the case, he would not have ample time to negotiate contract buy-out deals for Hogan, Nash, Hall, Goldberg, etc.
@philaman1972 But the top end guys had AOL Time Warner deals for giant money. Vince Didn't want to upset the pay structure. The same thing happened when WCW guys started coming to WWF like Marc Mero. He was getting paid as much as Undertaker.
I agree with him - There are only so many ways to end a fight - and wrestling has done them all - Those that are somewhat legal, anyhow . . . And if you are a fan long enough - You have seen them all. I think when they removed the cloak and allowed the fans to know it is not nor has it ever been 'real' - they changed the whole way fans looked at the business . . . You had to give them more - But when is more enough?
hmmm so him and russo must have fallen out again since this was made cuz in cornette's latest YouShoot he said he fucking despises Russo and wants to stay alive long enough to be able to piss on his grave lmao. anyone know how they fell out again?
Wait a sec, I think this interview was still during the time he was still in TNA, and I know he said some stuff about Russo since he left TNA so that means Cornette still hates Russo, Oh thank goodness
NO! Jim NO! dont go soft on Vince Russo now, not after all the shit you talked, please keep hating him, he deserves it especially after ruining wrestling
Auuugh! Oh, it cuts off at the best part! XD If the other half is posted somewhere, can I get a link, please? Or even just knowledge on where I can buy it?
to me, 9:14 is where everything becomes "what if" territory. I mean, shit, seems like the whole "You're gonna roll over & play dead for everybody on my roster" pretty much happened with the WCW and ECW guys. The only ones who seemed to get much of a "fair shake" were the ones who had already jumped ship long before the buyouts.
Anyone else lose a little respect for him considering the contrast between what he said in this interview and in the second edition about Vince Russo?
@scott917 He's up there on my list, however my hat has to go to Bobby the Brain Heenan. Best manager period. A side note- I wish someone would get into the business today, just to put all of his or her time and efforts solely on being the best manager. Not whatever the hell is on lately. Not one good manager, or even promo person really. I'm not trying to bash the 'superstars' but come on, it's kinda like people are half assing it. idk just my 'professional' opinion lol
It all started in the carnivals. The matches started getting fixed as a way to make money through betting AND money was down as the matches were too long and too boring.
I love Corny, but he couldn't be more wrong about UFC being like wrestling... UFC has stolen boxing's audience, not wrestling's... Corny, like so many oldsters, want so much for wrestling to be "legit", they mistakenly think UFC does what wrestling does/did, but it doesn't... UFC is competition, while wrestling is a morality play. UFC hasn't hurt wrestling, bad writing and choreography has.
@DeepSouthWrestling1 Corny actually does have a valid point about UFC being pro wrestling without the scripted finishes. If you look at the history of catch wrestling and shoot wrestling, it was amateur and professional wrestlers in Europe and Japan using submission holds in addition to pins to win matches. Of course, the professional matches were booked, but the amateur matches weren't. The sport of MMA sprung out of the shoot wrestling movement in Japan.
@potomacbrave88 : What about tag teams? What about managers? What about cheating? What about masks or gimmicks? What about babyfaces vs heels? What about wild action? What about stipulations? See, these things are truly made pro wrestling what it was... as I said, it was a morality play. In UFC (like legit sports), the idea is for the best man to win, while wrestling is a morality play... when done properly, people want to see the good guy win. Sorry, but it's wishful thinking on Corny's part.
@DeepSouthWrestling1 I agree with you about wrestling being a morality play, and when you have talented workers and good booking, it's great to watch. Yes, most people want to see the good guy win, but I think people will also be drawn to a good character, angle or gimmick regardless of babyface or heel. I was referring to the common ancestry, so to speak, of wrestling and MMA and how MMA sprang from a form of professional wrestling.
@potomacbrave88 : I suppose to an extent, although I think boxing has way more in common with UFC than wrestling... the problem is this: wrestling should NOT be treated as a legit sport. Try watching some old St Louis wrestling to see what I mean... it was boring!! Wrestling should be wild!!! It makes me sad to see/hear old timers trying to draw comparisons to UFC... it's like trying to say Rocky movies are like real boxing matches...
@DeepSouthWrestling1 You're right. Any activity with bookers and storylines and pre-determined results should not be treated as a legit sport. Over the last few years, however, some wrestlers (like Undertaker and Kurt Angle) have begun adopting a more shoot style to make it seem like what they're doing is authentic, even though we know it's not. Wrestling should be what it is: over-the-top action with wild characters but with storylines that make sense.
@potomacbrave88 : Agreed, although I'm cool with stuff that doesn't make sense as long as it's done well and with conviction. Memphis wrestling had absolutely crazy shit going on all the time (wrestling monsters, aliens, etc...), but it was done so well, almost with a wink to the audience... give me that over 99% of what WWE has done over the past 20 years or so...
@DeepSouthWrestling1 it was real back in the early 1900s. It was essentially MMA without all the various techniques. It became the art form we know it as when people started paying off the wrestlers to take a dive.
@AxeCrow : I don't think so... what we now call pro wrestling started out in carnivals, and always had predetermined finishes. Some of the actual grappling might have been more legit back in the day, but the outcome was always predetermined.
@DeepSouthWrestling1 Yep your right. I belive Pro wrestling stopped being compettitve in the early 1900's late 1890's. I think the person who started it was Georgs Hackenschmitt, because he was simply winning every match so wrestling was loosing money. His agent convinced him to add more and more showmanship. This caught on until it became all entertainment.
@juzt156 : Actually, legit wrestlers started going to the "fixed" fights in carnivals. The worked fights started in carnys, and the wrestlers started "competing" there because there was more money, because legit wrestling matches were dull... some lasted over 3 hours...
@DeepSouthWrestling1. Ok. I think Hackenschmitt was the first big name to go in for it though. I think that was mainly how it happened in Britian. But there is a big carnival and wrestling tradition here as well. So maybe the same thing happened.
