I don't understand why people always complain about credit cards. I just pay cash whenever I can, have one credit card and pay bills on time. Two times the fucking assholes charged me for a fake charity. But I just called them and got the charged canceled.

This bill did nothing. As soon as it was signed I received a notice from my credit card company that they were raising the interest rate. I always paid my bill ontime and always sent 4-5 times more than the minimum they asked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This law is a joke i work for a CC company and know first hand. All this bill will do is inform u of a pending increase in your APR and give u a way to pay your bill by phone for free in most cases. if u want to talk to a rep at one of these places yes u will still get charged. also current talk has moved to no late/Over the limit charge fee reversals. What we Need to fix this is a FIXED CAP on apr for example Prime +12% or something like that not the current Prime + the sky
I didn't think keeping my Sears card would be a problem, since the cardholder can fight back against them jacking APRs by boycotting their stores. Not so. After years of being a loyal customer they jacked me to 30%. Needless to say, I will never shop at Sears or Kmart again & now it will cost THEM.
The boycott is the ace-in-the-hole for any dept. store cardholder who has been victimized by predatory practices. I only wish other non-dept store cards had such an Achilles heel.
Now with a credit score of 717 & trapped in a credit card interest rate of 26.4%.... Is this going to help me stop DROWNING in a measly balance of 12,000? My original loan has been paid off several times over now.... but for the rape-fees....

I recieved a notice from my credit card company last week telling me that I had a choice. A 10% increase in my interest rate, starting from day one, no grace period, or cancel my card. I canceled my card, and am paying it off at the old rate. I'm not that stupid to agree with their terms.

It depends on what credit card company you're dealing with. 2 out of the 3 I am overdue on are being actually nice and willing to work out payment plans that reduce interest and over-limit penalties. I explained to them that I'm unemployed and can't get another job, and that I am not a "reckless spender."
Its customary for presidents to sign a bill with more then one pen to give away as gifts and use as memorbillia in case the bill makes a major historical signifigance... think of the pen that signed the Gettysburgh Address or the Bill of Rights.

This is good legislation, but still insufficient. In a consumer economy. If the largest and most profitable industry specializes in skillfully keeping consumers in debt, what is the logical outcome? And tomorrow I am going to switch it to $50,000. Which they still can do. They now just have to tell you 45 days in advance.

What the unsecured lending industry does is steal because they have the ability to change a contract once your in debt. Such example is the average $5,000 debt requires $50,000 to clear. $60,000 requires $750,000. Because they are allowed to switch the contract after you already make a purchase.

That's funny-I've been using credit cards for decades and never had to pay a single dime on interest rates because I pay my bills on time and pay whatever I charge off quickly. Nobody forces anyone to use a credit card. Daddy never used a credit card. Not his entire life. He NEVER used one. Dad scolded me when I did get one; but I use it wisely; When I use a credit card, I pay it off-fast. So for years I never had to pay a dime in interest rates yet enjoyed all the benefits of having a credit card. Now if these credit cards charge me an annual fee-I have a quick cure for that. The money that banks lend out for credit is YOUR money... If YOU are careful and save, YOU maybe earn 1% interest. The bank loans out YOUR money and earns 30% or more on that loan. How is it possible that YOU can agree to allow someone to loan out YOUR money and make 30% on it while only paying YOU 1%. These companies do raise interest rates on borrowers constantly, whenever they feel like it. When was the last time they raised the interest rate that YOU earn on your savings account?
about 5 years ago, I had a couple credit cards that jacked up their interests rates when I missed a bill by a couple of days, on a different card! And this is after making good on-time payments for 4 years! I got pissed and paid them off and canceled those accounts. 5 years later, my credit is awesome, and these 2 companies are flooding my mail box with apps. lol, in the dumpster they go~ I hope they go out of business.

As far as guns go, I should be able to carry my firearm anywhere in this country that I want to as long as I abide all the laws of every state in which I travel. Banks hurt themselves by extending credit to alot of "bad" risk customers and making up for it by penalizing their "good" customers... It should be hard to get a credit card! Why should we "need" them? A person who actually pays CASH and doesn't use credit get's punished for doing so!
How does it hurt a bank if they start being fair to responsible card owners now? Mind you, Obama is doing things like keeping banks from shifting payment dates, which could hurts both the banks and the card owner. Banks are greedy and only care about profit. They care nothing for the people who use their services. Nobody forces anyone to have a credit card but the fact is there is the pressure of advertising and the fact they are really easy to get. Consumers need to be protected from the sharks who take advantage of those who do not understand the small print and the crooked contracts they sign, especially when they lose a job.

During the Industrial Revolution, the steel, oil, and railroad industries were grossly monopolized, preventing the jumpstart of any competition (the existing small businesses were swallowed in by the fat cats). When one coporation has control over an entire industry, by killing or minimalizing competition, how is that any different--or any better--than socialism?

I didn't think keeping my Sears card would be a problem, since the cardholder can fight back against them jacking APRs by boycotting their stores. Not so. After years of being a loyal customer they jacked me to 30%. Needless to say, I will never shop at Sears or Kmart again & now it will cost THEM.
The boycott is the ace-in-the-hole for any dept. store cardholder who has been victimized by predatory practices. I only wish other non-dept store cards had such an Achilles heel.

So far my company has not honored this new law, especially since I protested to the new rate hike.

I recieved a notice from my credit card company last week telling me that I had a choice. A 10% increase in my interest rate, starting from day one, no grace period, or cancel my card. I canceled my card, and am paying it off at the old rate. I'm not that stupid to agree with their terms.

This is good legislation, but still insufficient. In a consumer economy. If the largest and most profitable industry specializes in skillfully keeping consumers in debt, what is the logical outcome? Credit Cards are more profitable than oil. If you think it is all an issue of consumer irresponsibility. Then I will lend you $5,000 today, requiring $2,000 of interest. And tomorrow I am going to switch it to $50,000. Which they still can do. They now just have to tell you 45 days in advance.

If you borrow money on a credit card to buy extravagant purchases you don't need. You ARE an idiot. Because you are going to pay 80% interest. That is what a "finance charge" equates to. The policies of credit companies are not even capitalistic. The INITIAL deals they make mean noting. They can, snd still will change those deals once you are in debt. And they bury those changes so that no individual is capable of understanding, Have a look at "deadbeet" default rate. It is under 5%.

The credit card system is not "going bust". It is currently the most profitable industry in existence. Above oil. The bill does not provide payment of a single credit card bill for anyone. What the unsecured lending industry does is steal because they have the ability to change a contract once your in debt. Such example is the average $5,000 debt requires $50,000 to clear. $60,000 requires $750,000. Because they are allowed to switch the contract after you already make a purchase.

I remember I was in a clothing store and this woman bought a ton of fashion clothing. She was with her baby and husband. To pay for them, she whipped out literally a whole STACK of credit cards. That's funny-I've been using credit cards for decades and never had to pay a single dime on interest rates because I pay my bills on time and pay whatever I charge off quickly. I think this new law rewards irresponsible people, so it's going to increase the problems-not help it. YOU CAN'T LIVE OFF OF CREDIT. Period. Nothing produces nothing. Dad scolded me when I did get one; but I use it wisely; When I use a credit card, I pay it off-fast. So for years I never had to pay a dime in interest rates yet enjoyed all the benefits of having a credit card. Now if these credit cards charge me an annual fee-I have a quick cure for that. I will believe all of this change stuff once the midterms come around. When every incumbent is thrown out of office accross this land from govoners to state reps to the congress to the senate I will be on board 100%, untill that happens and carreer cri aahhmm politicians are tossed to the side this will all be semantics. This applies to the cabinet as well, we the people have no control in all reality in regards to that, but I hope we the people get the point.

The money that banks lend out for credit is YOUR money... If YOU are careful and save, YOU maybe earn 1% interest. The bank loans out YOUR money and earns 30% or more on that loan. How is it possible that YOU can agree to allow someone to loan out YOUR money and make 30% on it while only paying YOU 1%. These companies do raise interest rates on borrowers constantly, whenever they feel like it. When was the last time they raised the interest rate that YOU earn on your savings account?

about 5 years ago, I had a couple credit cards that jacked up their interests rates when I missed a bill by a couple of days, on a different card! And this is after making good on-time payments for 4 years! I got pissed and paid them off and canceled those accounts. 5 years later, my credit is awesome, and these 2 companies are flooding my mail box with apps. lol, in the dumpster they go~ I hope they go out of business.

This bill is a farce. This is a free market society. As far as guns go, I should be able to carry my firearm anywhere in this country that I want to as long as I abide all the laws of every state in which I travel. Strange for it to be in this bill, yes, but nobody in congress that is still an American would have voted for such a anti-american bill without something like that in it.

Obama introduces a few measures that ensure that credit card companies stop using deceitful methods and start acting in a FAIR and BALANCED way, and you claim that he's a terrorist, communist, and destroying the "free" market; dude, you don't make sense at all. You can limit intentionally bad business practices that do real harm to real, responsible people without endangering your holy, perfect ideology of the "free market".

Banks are in the business to make money. Nobody is forced to use credit cards and every credit card comes with agreement terms.
Now it's going to be harder to get a credit card because a bunch of people are not responsible.
Banks will make up the money somewhere, and they are going to get it from people with good credit now.

Banks hurt themselves by extending credit to alot of "bad" risk customers and making up for it by penalizing their "good" customers... It should be hard to get a credit card! Why should we "need" them? A person who actually pays CASH and doesn't use credit get's punished for doing so!

How does it hurt a bank if they start being fair to responsible card owners now? Mind you, Obama is doing things like keeping banks from shifting payment dates, which could hurts both the banks and the card owner. He's just putting in common sense, straightforward limitations, and he's doing NOTHING to make it easier on people who are irresponsible; watch the video and listen to what he puts in.

Banks are greedy and only care about profit. They care nothing for the people who use their services. Nobody forces anyone to have a credit card but the fact is there is the pressure of advertising and the fact they are really easy to get. Consumers need to be protected from the sharks who take advantage of those who do not understand the small print and the crooked contracts they sign, especially when they lose a job.

You are pinalised for not using a credit card because credit determines so much in our lives sadly. Even some businesses promote people based on their credit. You have to build it.
You also need credit/debit to order online or other areas.
Every card does come with agreements, but card companies dont follow those agreements even when consumers do. How do you ignore that and act like only the consumers are breaking the rules?
It should be hard to get a card, would cut down irresponsibles huh?

No free market is absolute, and regulation has always been part of any market-oriented society. If you look throughout all of history, you will not find exceptions - government action in fact creates most of the elements needed for a market, from currency to corporate charters.

I agree. Philosophically, it seems to me that pure capitalism contradicts itself. During the Industrial Revolution, the steel, oil, and railroad industries were grossly monopolized, preventing the jumpstart of any competition (the existing small businesses were swallowed in by the fat cats). When one coporation has control over an entire industry, by killing or minimalizing competition, how is that any different--or any better--than socialism?

Government power goes up and down as we try new things, this isnt new and the government has had as much and more power in the past.
Stop being so paranoid. This is nothing new and it just takes us all keeping our reps and sens in check. The government is far from enough power to become some USSR alike. Far from the max power its had in the past.
Read some more history and not just the history of the paranoid.

Many guns off the streets were stolen from law abiding citizens or made in legitimate gun shops that shouldnt be making assault weapons. No law abiding citizens needs assault weapons. Not that they would do so well against tanks if its the government your worried about.
Even then, many "law-abiding" citizens kill innocent people on accident yearly. Gun-nuts are definitely people to be afraid of, even trained ones. Anybody ready for danger at any turn will make mistakes.

Thats a very uneducated statement you just made, assuming most people using social programs dont have jobs or arent looking for them.
I was on food stamps while being an in-home nurse.
It was very helpful for the 3 months I was on it, and I got off when I was finished with the service.
Many people are simply laid off and need help while looking for a second job, which isnt easy to do most of the time, no matter what your skills.
