Hmmm a system whereby the voters of arizona allow money to be given from the public purse to remedy this imbalance might be the best option. I don't see why individual people should get huge sums of cash from the public purse just because they want to run for power.
@achzdck Yeah will I have two 9mm's with 6 32 round mags, and a lot of ammo. I have a s&w m4 with EO tech, surefire tactical light, a thousand anti armor green tip 5.56 rounds, 10 thirty round mags, 1 12 GA mossberg 930 pistol grip shotgun, body armor, and lots of democrat friends with lots of guns and lots of defense and assault training. Funny how you think guns are restricted to idiotic Republicans.
@achzdck Its easy to see from your caps and insulting of people you don't know and just your plain ignorance that you are a Republican. Now do the universe a favor and go on a killing spree and kill all your republican friends and family. If you have any children go ahead and throw them into a furnace, because your way of thinking is a disease on this world that should not be spread. You are a traitor to this country and you deserve to fucking suffer to your last breath. Thanks
Cenk seems to fail to understand we are a Republic not a Democracy. That's why we have a Supreme Court because we have a constitution. Cenk just say you don't like the first amendment except for the part that lets you have more of a voice than me.
@achzdck Again, it’s not a war. It’s an action taken by the UN to prevent a slaughter and we’re part of that team. A destabilized Middle-East is in our interests.
@achzdck The new “non-war” is a U.N. Resolution and we’re supporting it. Unlike GW, we didn’t ignore the UN and cowboy our way into a war. In fact, we were not the most aggressive party on Libya. I agree with the Libya course. Support the U.N. and no boots on the ground. If we start putting boots on the ground, then I’ll have a major issue with it.
What “people” say about party lines has nothing to do with the facts. I disagree with Obama on some things, but won’t lie to make him look bad.
@achzdck The only people who believe we’re in a recovery would be...every economist on earth. Other than that, you’re probably right. Not.
If you don’t pay taxes, then you have no right to bitch about anything. Not paying taxes un unpatriotic, unless you’re poor, in which case I forgive you.
“Saved & created” is definitely harder to figure, but there is no doubt that many jobs were saved AND created. There is no economist on earth who will tell you otherwise, unless they’re lying.
@achzdck I note that you say you bring “facts,” but I don’t think I’ve seen one yet. “Things went from bad to worse” is not a fact. The fact is our debt got bigger (which it would’ve done had GW stayed in office, too). The economy was saved from a death spiral and has rebounded and has been growing for over a year and a half now. THAT is a fact. You jump on a train going downhill and it takes a while to slow it down.
Oh, forgot - YOUR stimulus tax cut was the largest in our nation’s history.
@achzdck Again. It’s clear that YOU are the “emotional” one here. Hence, the CAPS! My poor ears. I know your right wing ideology will not allow you to accept that unions played no part in the collapse, and that Freddy & Fanny were just a PART of the problem.
By the way...1/3 of the stimulus was a tax cut for YOU. And what America got was a million jobs saved in the auto industry, a turnaround of the shrinking economy, and a recovery (even if it’s slow).
Actually, we have never been a democratic republic.
It's not even possible, the two ideologies are completely incompatible.
We are now, and have always been a constitutional republic.
The libtards would like anyone who will listen to them, to believe that there is even the slightest bit of democracy in this country, only so they don't feel completely irrelevant.
@ForTheRepubl1c nice semantics.we democratically elect our representatives in our republic.every office except the presidency is elected directly by the people.
@achzdck I’m sorry you don’t have a perspective that comes from fact. It’s always “goverment’s” fault in your world. Bankers did NOTHING wrong, did they? Wall St. was just perfect, weren’t they? No default swaps. No casino mentality. No nuthin’, right?
I suppose right-wing deregulation of the banking system had nothing to do with it, either, eh?
@achzdck Minnesota has shut down, because they have a good governor who decided that there needs to be “shared sacrifice,” rather than it all being taken out on the working-class. Wisconsin and New Jersey have evil governors, who again, chose to kiss the ass of the corporate elite.
The commission assigned the task of deciding what caused the Great Recession said Freddie was PART of it, but far from being the ONLY part. Wall St. deregulation played a HUGE role. The Wall St. Casino.
@achzdck Talking points. Talking points. There were no union shops at AIG, Bear Stearns, Freddie Mac, and Shearson Lehman. Still, those poorly-run companies failed for the same reason America's Big Three failed. Malfeasance.
Republicans just voted DOWN an amendment that would’ve saved $53 billion in oil subsidies.
You need to breath, educate yourself. Unions are NOT to blame for our woes. Not by a long shot. LIke all righties, you blame the worker and let corporate greed slide. So patriotic.
@ceprelex Universal health care is extremely inefficient, and I'm sure you know the arguments.
Since healthcare costs money, and the government is paying, the value of money has everything to do with it! Every socialist nation admits there has to be some market function to the healthcare industry-otherwise we'd have a system like Cuba or North Korea.
You can only justify healthcare as a right by using force. We've had quasi-socialist healthcare for 50 yrs and suddenly there's a crisis!
@achzdck Wow. So, in your world, it’s a race to the bottom. If our workers will just DEAL WITH FUCKED UP WORKING CONDITIONS AND MAKING PENNY’S A DAY then all will be well, right? ‘Cuz we don’t want to upset those poor little corporations. It’s pretty messed up when you condone bailing out corporations with MY MONEY, and then allowing the Exxon’s of the world to NOT PAY ANY FUCKING TAXES. And somehow a worker wanting a living wage is “greed.”
@achzdck I don’t lie. They make up 11% of the workforce because we don’t manufacture anything here anymore...not because worker’s have rights, but because of greed. We had slavery (good deal for the owners). We had workers and horrific abuses, which prompted unions. Unions built our middle-class. Unions gave us weekends. Not all unions are bad, and many unions are necessary.
Education & experience being equal, pvt sector makes more. And $27/hr is nothing for a single father of three.
@achzdck They left Europe in part to get away from corporate control in cahoots with the church & gov’t. East India Company.
They well understood that too much corporate power can get out of hand and the people suddenly have no power, no voice.
I’ve given you quotes from Jefferson & Cleveland & you accuse me of TELLING LIES. What are you on? You need to breathe a little bit, get a grip. Ponder corporations like BP, who somehow got Repubs to block subpoena power for the Oil Spill Commission.
@achzdck In just 30 seconds you can do a little research - learn a little something.
On unions. Unions support Democrats by and large BECAUSE DEMOCRATS ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO GIVE A SHIT ABOUT WORKING PEOPLE!!!!! GET IT?? And unions were formed because of the mistreatment of workers by the very greedy sons of bitches whose asses you can’t stop kissing.
@achzdck Your thinking is far too simple. For starters, we don’t live in a socialist country, so nothing has been “proven” about “socialism.” Second, if you want to give Exxon the ability to secretly funnel millions to a political candidate, then you’re either Exxon or really stupid.
It used to be a crime for corporations to try to sway the outcome of an election. Many of our FOUNDING FATHERS hated corporations and wanted their power restricted. It’s part of what they CAME HERE FOR!
americans don't care as long as someone tells them what to do,we believe in being good little sheep and who care s about our kids fu@%k them its to hard to fight the assholes who run our lives besides if i don't go along with them i won't be able to get that over priced car i been wanting or new tities for the wife

We should have a cap on how much politicians are allowed to use on their campaigns. THAT would make it as fair as possible, without taking money from the tax payers.
@ceprelex If universal health care (under the Canadian System) is so great, then why are they privatizing certain portions of the health care system there, in certain provinces, and why did the Supreme Court, in 2005, rule that portions of the law not only violate your Charter of Right and Freedoms, but are a violation of Basic Human Rights? and maybe you can explain why NHS in Britain is going to privatize a majority of their system, as well as lay off over 50,000 employees? if it's so great?
The supreme court has become a bunch of assclowns. When they allow corporations to spend with no limits, the election process is fucked. A corp is NOT a person, so why the fuck should they have free reign to donate and finance who they want to get elected to 'assist' them in their business ventures? I lost all respect for those crusty old fuckwads. They've started a chain reaction that will ruin America. Fucking morons.

Cenk has ZERO grasp of how the government works. The supreme court rules by the constitution. That's all. They are NOT there to decide what the effect of their rulings are. It is the legislatures job to make the playing field even.
Even so, the point is clear. Donating to a candidate is considered speech. If the government matches those funds, they are taking away the value of that speech. The supreme court got it right. Liberals hate rights and just want to game the system and people.
@achzdck -- Thomas Jefferson. like Pres Cleveland, feared a day might come when Corporations would have the power they now do.
THOMAS JEFFERSON "I hope we shall... crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations which dare already to challenge our government in a trial of strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country."
So essentially, Cenk figure's, that not only is it Okay to use a Violent Government to force you to pay other people's Bill's.
But; that is also your responsibility to ensure that they have the ability and financial means to acquire those Bill's. So you can pay them for "Them".

Ruining? Dude its been over for a long time, Bush didnt win either election, Obama is a fake deomcrate, he is same as bush, continuity you can believe in. Its not a democracy at all, its corporate fascism.
fool! Bush did win the election. Had the people in Gore's own State voted for him he would have won, but they rejected him for the asshole that he is, hahaha
@genie0390 NO, wrong idiot freedumb monkey. Gore won, then fox new delcared bush won so there was a recount in florida, Gore was winning the recount, so the supreme court stepped in and stopped the recount and installed bush as president elect, FACT moron, go look up the history if you can find it. Secondly, bush's second shame election he won Ohio by installing voting machines that rigged the vote, this is scientifically proven by the fact that the exit polls had a huge margin of error.

For all those people who think removing private funding from public campaigns is "bad", imagine you go to vote for your favorite candidate, and while your signing in, you notice a sign that says "Register here, first vote free, all extra votes $1,000" Would that feel "democratic" to you? Of course not, and this is why all campaigns top to bottom should be publicly funded, period...
These people and this channel are completely insane. You are a vocal minority and you don't contribute to society. YOU are what's wrong with America. You think you can rise up like Greece or some other third world shithole?? Don't forget, we have more guns.
@dgallegos4201 Somehow I don't think anyone is intimidated by someone who sounds like they are sitting behind a keyboard wearing nothing but a cowboy hat, tighty whiteys, and a gun belt loaded with pop-caps...
You know there is more poor people than rich fucks? The only reason conservatives have a fighting chance is because the poor cooperate in their games. Where is the point when we say no? When do we exile our corrupt Dictators? When enough is enough, thats when we start anew. when we do something, instead of whining. when we walk, instead of talking.
Cenk again misses the point. You cannot take my TAX money and give it to a candidate that I WOULD NOT vote for simply because he or she SUCKS at fund raising. He also was wrong what the court decided last year. They stuck down a law that tried to block everyone, including corporations, from supporting candidates financially or with ads.
Whatever. republicans said kneel and you went ahead a started sucking. They made corporations as an entity and you just keep crying bullshit. You are so lost you forgot the reality of the situation. Your common sense is a total 180 to the where were at in america. Your not influencing a change you just want it the same and have no idea your alone in this fight.
2) From what I heard, it only acknowledges a 2 party system with 2 candidates. Should the "Rent is too damn high" guy get paid public money because he can't raise as much money as his opponents?
3) Providing the other candidate with money is not going to let voters make an "informed decision". Both candidates will spend their money lying. Informed voters go to factcheck or ontheissues.
Just hope none of the liberal supreme court justices die or quite while Obama is president. He kisses so much conservative ass, he would nominate Rush Limbaugh and Glen Peck to take their place.
I've been feeling TYT all day but this video threw me off. I might be misunderstanding (I dont think so though) but why would it make sense for the government to subsidize some random candidates campaign? If someone raises more than the spending cap....then they shouldnt be allowed to spend over the spending cap...right? What about a third candidate, or a fourth? Should taxes pay for their campaigns?
A higher court by definition isn't compatible with democracy.
We have a supreme court that interprets laws because we are republic.
Democrats don't promote democracy or even populism and the republicans certainly don't stand for republicanism.
If 99% of voters wanted universal healthcare even if it meant a total currency collapse or violent protests, would it be wise to let the majority decide?
yea, and this is why I don't vote for democrats or republicans. I actively look for the most suitable 'other' candidate. Screw them, they can't buy me. THe system is rotten to a core.
im not going to watch the video but if these propagandists think the supreme court is ruining democracy the supreme court is probably fixing democracy

This is just another thing that pisses me off... We're fucking the middle and lower class and the best part? Those people who are scared of worker's revolution's? They are setting up textbook conditions for one. If everyone suffers, they suffer silently. If a few benefit while most suffer, the majority gets very, very pissed.
is this a joke? honestly mr uygur, why is it the government's job to provide funds? and youre kinda goin pretty to say it is ruining democracy....especially considering the fact that democracy exactly translates to "people power"....so shouldn't it be up to the people to raise their own funds?
@dukatz1 i think they do this in other countries and it works well, but as to your second point it isn't people power it is corporation and union power and despite what the supreme court has said corporations are not people.
@fleammm oh thats right...corporations arent people...theyre robots my bad! take a look at some of milton friedman's videos on here - i think youd be very interested. and i dont care if other countries are doing it; this is america where individual freedom is supposed to triumph over government regulation. thats just what this country is, and if you think it is better off somewhere else then you have every right to go live there - that is the beauty of freedom.
also, say candidate A receives third party donations for his campaign. i just dont see why that means the government has to step in and equalize the money between candidate A and B ya know? who is stopping candidate B from receiving third party support?
@ProudAtheistIndiana Yeah, there's an answer, at a time when the government is cutting funding to vital programs at all levels (from local to federal). Just how do you think that the government would pay for these campaigns? and how do you think it would make things fair, forcing the people in this country that pay taxes, to fund political campaigns of people that they don't agree with?
@ProudAtheistIndiana I'd rather work on actually fixing the broken system, then just throwing taxpayer money into a broken abyss, and pretending that it's making things better. At a time when we our state governments are going broke, cutting services, and cutting jobs, do you really think it's fair to the taxpayers, or the community as a whole, to be using already scarce money, to fund a political campaign that you know statistically is likely to fail? How does wasting money make things better?
The Defense Budget should be cut by 20%, but Iked warned us --
"In the councils of government, we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist."
Teddy Roosevelt warned us about giving full control to corporations -
"The great corporations which we have grown to speak of rather loosely as trusts are the creatures of the State, and the State not only has the right to control them, but it is duty bound to control them wherever the need of such control is shown."
"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. . . . corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed."
Hate these asswipe, corporate whores on the Supreme Court. Scum. Our government CONTINUES to go downhill and is almost totally broken and we're fucked.
Sad fact: "Anthony Weiner Scandal" (in quotes) returns 2.5 Million Google results... "Clarence Thomas Scandal" (in quotes) returns only 19 thousand...
Public financing should not go to candidates. My tax dollars should not go to a candidate I don't want to vote for. Instead just cap the amount of money that can be used in a campaign.
for the bazillionth time, the citizens united case had nothing to do with campaign finance laws. citizens united only said that the 1st amendment protects independent candidate-advocacy by americans acting collectively as corporations. under this ruling groups like the nra and the sierra club would be considered advocacy corporations.
@cristoballs "citizens united only said that the 1st amendment protects independent candidate-advocacy by americans acting collectively as corporations. "
What we have right now is a 2 party oligarchy. We need campaign finance reform. Nobody should be buying politicians. That should be a crime worthy of 30 years in prison. How about we start locking up the right people for a change?!?!?
@iversonmatthew I'd say we've got a 3 party system. And that 3rd one is made up of 5 members of the Supreme Court, and they're the most powerful party of all.
@iversonmatthew The founding fathers, when drafting the constitution were well aware of the idea that in the halls of government the wealthy man, and the poor man HAD to be on equal footing. Of all the things which polarize the American people today, health care, gay marriage, abortion, etc. you'd think that we would at least be able to agree on such a fundamental thing as campaign finance reform. We have separation of Church and State, why not separation of Wealth and State?
@iversonmatthew We separate Church and State, because of the concept of equality through mutual exclusion. EVERYONE is equal, because NOONE is allowed to have their beliefs mandated by the ruling body. I cannot see how the same concept applied to wealth would be anything less than a boon to this country...
Thomas Jefferson: I hope we shall... crush in its birth the aristocracy of our moneyed corporations which dare already to challenge our government in a trial of strength, and bid defiance to the laws of our country.
*** Sorry, Mr. President Jefferson, but we've now handed over to the Corporations control of our government & I see no easy way to get it back.
I agree, if you add that politicians who sell out are punished by standing in front of a firing squad. After all, lobbyists are only trying to influence politics to their benefit - politicians are betraying the trust of the people.
@thegillotine09 oh yes politicians who sell us out should be considered the worst of the worst and should not be exempt from punishment. This kind of activity should be illegal, no matter who is recieving or giving.
It seems every Supreme Court ruling lately has been 5 - 4... is it always the 5 conservatives voting the same way & 4 liberals voting the opposite way? If so, that's a fundamentally flawed system - you might as well just have 1 person there.
SCOTUS got this one wrong. No one's restricting private speech, private candidates can always join the public program too. But they don't want others to have the same cash advantage they have. "Boohoo, my opponent now gets $1.2M to combat the $1.2M that traditional marriage groups spent on me!"
God, we wouldn't want elections to be TOO fair now, that goes against the very idea of democracy -- as neocons living in some political Narnia-land will claim the framers originally intended.
When corporations run the government, or buy or influence the government this much, it's called FASCISM. PERIOD.
Are they ruining democracy? OF COOOOOOOOOOOOOUUURSE!!!
All of the elements to set up fascism in the US are taking hold - have a scapegoat race, religion, etc. (Arabs/Muslims), set up a culture of fear around undesirables (gays, who thankfully are moving forward), and especially scaring the public about the onset of socialism, which is the OPPOSITE direction of what we're doing.
The journalists are mainly to blame here. They are always reporting that such and such have received so much in contributions and that the other guy is way behind in donations.
They are turning elections into a donation match. And guess what: the people won't support the loser, so the campaign donation system works!
If the media would only shut up about how much each candidate had received it wouldn't even matter.
@MrJohnnyrace Ron Paul is no savior, you think he can actually change the way the game has been played for the past 50 years? Even Reagan got shot and he was on their side.
This is why its so important to always vote democrat. Presidents are only around for eight years at the most, but supreme court justices can fuck you and your country FOR LIFE! Thank you Reagan, Bush Sn. and Bush Jr: your legacies of destruction will outlast your terms for generations.....
@busboysanalogy other choice: have a supreme council for magistrates. Compose have it made up of various informed people coming from various elements of society (reknowned professors, top notch judges, quality journalists, respected politicians, representatives different interest groups), and have them make up that pool for the president to choose from.
(even better: change the Constitution to de-politize the system)
@perrin6 Oh I bet the 5 conservative justices would say unions aren't people and therefore, don't have free speech rights.
I guarantee the USSC would act a lot different if cameras were in there, but Scalia seems to be scared to have himself recorded. I guess he thinks he might have a soul and that the recording devices will take it from him.
Our founding fathers were probably v that we ery embarrassed have biased judges in the Supreme Court that destroy America's democracy. So was Americans we need to stop voting Republican Voted Republican because most of the judges were put in power by the Republicans. But the Republican politicians aren't in power these judges are worthless.
The american politican-economic system is built so that americans lose. You need a revolution (non-violent obviously). When europeans got a problem, they protest (sometimes riot), I always wonder what americans are waiting for.
This court is totally disgusting. You're preaching to the choir when you say they're ruining our government ... which I don't think has been a Democracy in ages.
How about this: institute an alternative voting system so that smaller parties can actually receive votes, and boycott campaigns that don't impose a cap on contributions, but no, that would be smart.
@MacabreManifesto I agree with this and I cannot for the life of me understand why Cenk doesn't talk about it. Plurality voting ensures that we have to vote for the lesser of two evils. If we had better voting system, elections would be more competitive and it would be a lot easier to elect good candidates. Without voting system reform, every fight is an uphill battle.
The most pragmatic solution is to have an open primary with approval voting and let the top two go into the general.
I think you're all missing the point that corporations can do political ads anyway, so as long as they can do THAT, they can bribe politicians.
So the only solution is to BAN ALL PAID POLITICAL ADVERTISING. I know it sounds harsh, but it's the only solution that would actually work.
The consequence would be that candidates would be incentivized to have debates, which media already have an incentive to host as it brings them ratings and thus revenue. Thus reason, not money, would win elections.
@TheNavigateur I like banning ads. But your faulty reasoning is assuming debates would bring reason. What gives network ratings is entertainment, there won't be any serious debates. Not to mention King Makers like Fox don't often invite people who can actually say things other than memorized talking points such as Ron Paul (or people on the progressive side (or even non-Republicans)). Taking citizen questions is stupid too, only approved questions get asked anyway, plus citizens ask dumb things.
Hmmm a system whereby the voters of arizona allow money to be given from the public purse to remedy this imbalance might be the best option. I don't see why individual people should get huge sums of cash from the public purse just because they want to run for power.

Anywho...enjoy your blinders.
demmmmm1 8 months ago
@achzdck Minnesota has shut down, because they have a good governor who decided that there needs to be “shared sacrifice,” rather than it all being taken out on the working-class. Wisconsin and New Jersey have evil governors, who again, chose to kiss the ass of the corporate elite.
The commission assigned the task of deciding what caused the Great Recession said Freddie was PART of it, but far from being the ONLY part. Wall St. deregulation played a HUGE role. The Wall St. Casino.
demmmmm1 8 months ago
@achzdck Talking points. Talking points. There were no union shops at AIG, Bear Stearns, Freddie Mac, and Shearson Lehman. Still, those poorly-run companies failed for the same reason America's Big Three failed. Malfeasance.
Republicans just voted DOWN an amendment that would’ve saved $53 billion in oil subsidies.
You need to breath, educate yourself. Unions are NOT to blame for our woes. Not by a long shot. LIke all righties, you blame the worker and let corporate greed slide. So patriotic.
demmmmm1 8 months ago
@ceprelex Universal health care is extremely inefficient, and I'm sure you know the arguments.
Since healthcare costs money, and the government is paying, the value of money has everything to do with it! Every socialist nation admits there has to be some market function to the healthcare industry-otherwise we'd have a system like Cuba or North Korea.
You can only justify healthcare as a right by using force. We've had quasi-socialist healthcare for 50 yrs and suddenly there's a crisis!
VictoryCough 8 months ago
@achzdck Wow. So, in your world, it’s a race to the bottom. If our workers will just DEAL WITH FUCKED UP WORKING CONDITIONS AND MAKING PENNY’S A DAY then all will be well, right? ‘Cuz we don’t want to upset those poor little corporations. It’s pretty messed up when you condone bailing out corporations with MY MONEY, and then allowing the Exxon’s of the world to NOT PAY ANY FUCKING TAXES. And somehow a worker wanting a living wage is “greed.”
That’s fucked up, man. Truly, very messed up.
demmmmm1 8 months ago
@achzdck I don’t lie. They make up 11% of the workforce because we don’t manufacture anything here anymore...not because worker’s have rights, but because of greed. We had slavery (good deal for the owners). We had workers and horrific abuses, which prompted unions. Unions built our middle-class. Unions gave us weekends. Not all unions are bad, and many unions are necessary.
Education & experience being equal, pvt sector makes more. And $27/hr is nothing for a single father of three.
demmmmm1 8 months ago
@achzdck They left Europe in part to get away from corporate control in cahoots with the church & gov’t. East India Company.
They well understood that too much corporate power can get out of hand and the people suddenly have no power, no voice.
I’ve given you quotes from Jefferson & Cleveland & you accuse me of TELLING LIES. What are you on? You need to breathe a little bit, get a grip. Ponder corporations like BP, who somehow got Repubs to block subpoena power for the Oil Spill Commission.
demmmmm1 8 months ago

My thoughts on the law:
1) it's an inappropriate use of public funds.

CaughtNTheCrosshair2 8 months ago
@CaughtNTheCrosshair2 I'd rather have them public funded then have our elections be about who has the most money behind them.

SCOTUS got this one wrong. No one's restricting private speech, private candidates can always join the public program too. But they don't want others to have the same cash advantage they have. "Boohoo, my opponent now gets $1.2M to combat the $1.2M that traditional marriage groups spent on me!"

They need to kill democracy in order to save it!

@MrJohnnyrace Ron Paul is no savior, you think he can actually change the way the game has been played for the past 50 years? Even Reagan got shot and he was on their side.

@busboysanalogy I'm betting democrats would vote for Scalia today.
manonthemount 8 months ago
This is why its so important to always vote democrat. Presidents are only around for eight years at the most, but supreme court justices can fuck you and your country FOR LIFE! Thank you Reagan, Bush Sn. and Bush Jr: your legacies of destruction will outlast your terms for generations.....
SSJ3Ulcer 8 months ago
@busboysanalogy other choice: have a supreme council for magistrates. Compose have it made up of various informed people coming from various elements of society (reknowned professors, top notch judges, quality journalists, respected politicians, representatives different interest groups), and have them make up that pool for the president to choose from.
(even better: change the Constitution to de-politize the system)

So unions can spend unlimited amount on campaign ads as well as corporations. That gives me some hope.
perrin6 8 months ago

Yes, what an interesting states' rights opinion. What a bunch of activist judges. I wonder what it's like to have *no* ethics and no shame?

The american politican-economic system is built so that americans lose. You need a revolution (non-violent obviously). When europeans got a problem, they protest (sometimes riot), I always wonder what americans are waiting for.

We just need to get rid of private financing altogether and only allow public funds.

MacabreManifesto 8 months ago 2
@MacabreManifesto I agree with this and I cannot for the life of me understand why Cenk doesn't talk about it. Plurality voting ensures that we have to vote for the lesser of two evils. If we had better voting system, elections would be more competitive and it would be a lot easier to elect good candidates. Without voting system reform, every fight is an uphill battle.
The most pragmatic solution is to have an open primary with approval voting and let the top two go into the general.
Mutex50 8 months ago
I think you're all missing the point that corporations can do political ads anyway, so as long as they can do THAT, they can bribe politicians.
So the only solution is to BAN ALL PAID POLITICAL ADVERTISING. I know it sounds harsh, but it's the only solution that would actually work.
The consequence would be that candidates would be incentivized to have debates, which media already have an incentive to host as it brings them ratings and thus revenue. Thus reason, not money, would win elections.
TheNavigateur 8 months ago
@TheNavigateur I like banning ads. But your faulty reasoning is assuming debates would bring reason. What gives network ratings is entertainment, there won't be any serious debates. Not to mention King Makers like Fox don't often invite people who can actually say things other than memorized talking points such as Ron Paul (or people on the progressive side (or even non-Republicans)). Taking citizen questions is stupid too, only approved questions get asked anyway, plus citizens ask dumb things.
