Still one of the most fantastic videos ever made. Still not quite certain what's going on but it doesn't matter. If you'll notice at 3:55, there's a couple on every pole....
Fasntastic! I got into the seldom seen kid and fell in love with it, Its funny because to me the whole album is about falling in love! and you wonder why didnt I see it before??
Great music! and Guy has one of the most honest voices I have ever heard.
Elbow have been around since the mid 90's but were just releasing EPs but their first Album release was in 2001 (Asleep in the Back) Guy's voice is truly amazing and unique! When a vocalist can make the listener really believe what they are saying? that is true talent!! and Guys got bucket loads!!
I respect that, to each his own. It's like, Rush would be my favorite band in the world if I liked Geddy Lee's voice, which I don't. So I just "really like" Rush rather than love them.
Yes I understand, good singers have an instant connection with some people but even the best rub others the wrong way, its simply taste which is really uncontrollable.
Elbow's singer sings a real catchy, emotional style, and I hear the same in Thom just with a different voice and motivation, if that makes sense at all.
No, that actually makes perfect sense. When I was in college, I used to listen and buy music according to what critics and others thought. Now I just listen to what feels right to me. I'll listen to a top-40 song if there is really soulful singing.
I'm in college now but same here. Though I tend to discover a lot more music that I like anywhere else but the top-40 heheh. For example I saw in DJ Shadow's The Private Press album a lot of the emotion, disparity, and catchiness that I like in many Radiohead tunes.
But yeah, critics tend to ignore the fact that everybody has different taste, and friends are always in a rush to force me their music because they want someone else to love what they love.
Sometimes though albums can be growers I think, there's bands I originally hated cos of the hype surrounding them and I found trying to understand where an artist is coming from can make you see their music from another perspective.
well Charlieattic my fave bands are Rush and Radiohead, and I couldn't imagine them without Geddy or Thom. I guess u just dont like higher voices maybe. I never thought I would see both bands mentioned in the same statement though lol. If you dont like the voices though, what exactly do u like about each band?
Another great band, might not get the recognition they deserve now, but believe me in years to come people will look back and realise how good they are.
Correct more shame them...Dam the Pop Idol crap polluting young minds. This is music for connoisseurs. Like fine wine gets better the longer you you give it air
when i first saw the left4dead commerical, i was like oh shit, its that song! that song that burns in my heart like a thousand suns! its grounds for divorce!
Yes, im one of the many that started because of the L4D commercial...personally after listening to this and The Bones of You, i compare them to Queens of the Stone Age. I dunno if its just because i just spent the last month or so listening to QOTSA exclusively (if it is please tell me, if not yay), but yea...(btw i don't kno sht about pink floyd, nor do i feel like finding out)
One day my friend you will hear Pink floyd and you will be hooked, its happened to millions on every continent on the planet, you may need to grow up a bit though, its maybe still a bit above you yet.
Im sure you will get it someday, they are quite simply the biggest and best band the planet has ever seen and heard and darkside of the moon is a masterpiece which will be listened to long after the supposed supergroups have dissapeared into the mists of time.
Ive been listening to Elbow for a while now and they are really growing on me, i think comparing them to radiohead is a mistake and comparing anyone at all to Pink Floyd is just being silly.
Self indulgent ,of course they are , they are Pink Floyd for fuck sake.............
damn thats a good song! After listening to radiohead mainly for well over a year, every other band just seemed soo shitty and dull by comparison. I learned about this band after they recently won the Mercury prize, and I really am starting to like them :)
They played this Monday night in Cambridge. YES!! The first gig of the tour post-Mercury award and they're still the same sweet, humble bunch of lads. Guy Garvey even stopped a song at one point to check someone in the crowd was ok-'Are you alright kid?'. I just adore them!
very jealous they played this for you. We went to the gig last night in Wolverhampton which was great but they didn't play this or my other favourite Red. Never mind :)
Elbow and Radiohead both make beautiful music, but I feel the motivation behind what they both do is their main difference. Thom Yorke's more of your experimental, skinny, slightly weird student emo type who ventures into musical extremes which can people uncomfortable. Garvey's more of your solid, chunky, reliable, smoke and a pint down the pub man whose music and lyrics mostly lament over lost love and friendship. I suppose Elbow come across as more down to earth with their approach really.
Baffles me why slappedcheek gets negative comments for clearly stating the obvious!. I bought Radioheads 1st 4 albums but i can relate to Elbow much more, dunno if it's cos im from down the road where they're from, so maybe on a personal level the music and lyrics seem that little bit more meaningful, not to mention dopamine-enducing...peace.
Elbow are flipping great but better than radiohead?? i think not.. and if you say that about radioheads lyrics then you then you obviously havnt been listning.
popkorn2266, i don't understand your comment, i never commented on Radioheads lyrics!, i really like radiohead ( seeing as i have their 1st 4 albums as stated in my 1st comment i would have thought that could imply i was a fan..? )I actually commented on Elbow meaning more to me personally, so yes, i have been listening, it you who obviously haven't been looking. You think RD are better...that's fine, i think they are both great bands, just do different things for me on different levels. peace.
i agree........way better than radiohead..............seldom seen kid is their best album.............hope they win the mercury music pize tonight..............guy writes the most excellent lyrics
Radiohead's music is more dissonant, more striking to listen to, whereas Elbow's music works it's way into your psyche quite beautifully. It's all down to backgrounds - I'd assume that none of Elbow have been to the depths of depression Yorke has faced and so the music stirs you in a different way. But please, Radiohead self-indulgent? Some say the same about Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' and yet it's an amazing, moving piece of work.
i find most pink floyd has three minutes of a great song, but too much, basically, self indulgent padding out the rest
but then im not into that kind of thing, but i can see why others are
agree with you about the differences between the two bands though, elbow are definitely a band that you have to really listen to to fall in love with them, but they're amazing :)
To be honest what makes these two bands(most notably Radiohead) is that they refuse to trap themselves inside one style, hey if you dont believe me just listen to Just and then Pyramid Song by Radiohead and youll see what i mean
That's true... very difficult to do without alienating your fan base! (which in part they have, come to think of it) It would be great if there were more bands around like Elbow. I really can't stand listening to the same old pigeonholed, emotionless music that gets churned out!
a truly emotional song, does anyone know where this video was shot? I need to get into Elbow, similar to the Doves in sound but with dark messages in their lyrics.
I've loved this band since hearing "Forget Myself". I'm very glad to see they've finally started to gain more commercial success with "The Seldom Seen Kid" - they deserve it. One of the greatest and underrated bands of all time.
just found out About this band about 3 hrs ago..and I to bow to elbow. amazing amazing feeling in just 1 song. looking forward to finding out more about them. rock on ELBOW
Your eyes are just like black spiders, your hair & dress in ribbons, babycakes. In despair or incoherent, nothing in between. China white, my bride tonight, smiling on the tiles. Bring that minute back. We never get so close as when the sunward flight begins. I share it all with you, powder blue.
Stumble through the crowds together, they're trying to ignore us. That's OK. I'm proud to be the one you hold when the shakes begin. Sallow skinned, starry eyed, blessed in our sin. Bring that minute back. We never get so close to death, makes you so alive. I share it all with you, powder blue.
I just love that lyric: "I'm proud to be the one you hold, when the shakes begin". I think its my favourite lyric ever, goes round and round my head. I think I read it was about a couple the lead singer saw in a pub, obviously off their trees on something and had nothing at all apart from each other. Very tragic and yet touching.
Such a beautiful, BEAUTIFUL, tragic song... A friend introduced me to this band (and particular song) when we were doing a Top 5 Saddest Songs list. It breaks my heart every time, but I love it dearly.
ive never really given elbow a chance but after a friend told me they are one of the biggest underrated bands going i decided to give them a go and i like this song, will definitely be listening to more
I ADORE this song, not so keen on the video though, i guess i have different images in my head to this song, like when you read the book then watch the film etc. Anyways. Beautiful, Beautiful, Beautiful! Im proud to be the one hold, when the shakes begin! Gives me goosebumps this song does!
Awesome band, first saw them supporting muse in cardiff and have enjoyed them since. I agree with most of you that it is his voice, just powerfully understated. Very cool.
this is one of my favourite songs ever - been in love with it from the moment i first heard it... and god they even manage to make a saxophone sound beautiful!!!!
well, amongst the more discerning brits who know what proper music sounds like, elbow are extremely popular but in the grand scheme of things no, theyre tragically not very popular over here. i think that could be part of their appeal though, theyre like a well hidden gem. im expecting a single off their fourth album to be the best song ever written and explode them into public consciousness though. theres a prediction for you..
this song is the reason why elbow is always my favorite.

Yeah, just does not make sense to me that even word of mouth would not have propelled Elbow to at least where Coldplay is.
Superior music, inferior sales, tragically unfair

Awesome band, first saw them supporting muse in cardiff and have enjoyed them since. I agree with most of you that it is his voice, just powerfully understated. Very cool.

This video is Brilliant! These cats have a great way of breaking away from the mundane videos that the propoganda villians control.

How popular are they in England?
mucca31 4 years ago
well, amongst the more discerning brits who know what proper music sounds like, elbow are extremely popular but in the grand scheme of things no, theyre tragically not very popular over here. i think that could be part of their appeal though, theyre like a well hidden gem. im expecting a single off their fourth album to be the best song ever written and explode them into public consciousness though. theres a prediction for you..
bigjim311085 4 years ago 3
God willing, you are correct.
