Totally stole the thunder from that line, and for what? to avoid offending blacks? lame. If you're going to drop the racism in a song you cover, don't just change it to be goofy, just drop the whole line. There was so much punch in the original line, it kinda ruined the song for me.

Jesus is the only hope of salvation from the guilt of sin. He is God come in the flesh. And he came to wash away our sins with his blood that he shed on the cross. Salvation is a free gift, but you must repent and ask Jesus to save you from your sins and come into your heart. God is good. It is written, "The just shall live by his faith."
HUNTING FOR BUDDY HOLLY? YOU CHICKEN SHIT WHITE MOTHER FUCKER! AFRAID OF A RACISM CHARGE FROM SOME GANG BANGER FUCK THAT NEITHER CARES FOR POST-PUNK OR UNDERSTANDS IT. CHICKEN SHIT!
Guys, clearly the cover is not going to be identical to the original so go listen to the original if all you're gonna do is whine about it. Maybe it's not the best, maybe the lyrics got changed, but had they not changed the lyrics you guys'd jump on that too and call them racist just because you seem to enjoy hating.
"I was hunting for Buddy Holly in the dark"? If you're going to cover a song of this caliber don't belittle it by changing the lyrics because you don't have the cojones to say "niggers". We're adults, not children, we can say words the collective find unsettling for the sake of being artistic...
@witchdoctor66 Jeffrey Lee changed the lyrics around sometimes himself, though, in order to offend whoever needed it: One time when they (The Gun Club, dud) were playing with some Blasters-type crowd in attendance, he was heard to sing this lyric: "I was huntin' for rockabilly assholes down in the dark...!" No lie.
My band covered this way back around 83/84 and we struggled with that word. We eventually substituted in the word muggers.Apart from the usual meaning, to us it also meant a generally bad and sneaky person. We often used it as a friendly jibe at each other.
Terrible cover...it has no suspense, no dynamics like the original...just an idiot trying to sound bluesy...and total sell out lack of balls to change "nigger" to Buddy Holly...of course JLP wasn't racist , he even did a rap song lol...complete crap cover
@MichellesPoontang jack white has a rule, no swearing. and i think hes done a pretty good fucking job at being bluesy. But i do get what you mean with the dynamics
JLP was oppsessed by Robert Johnson.OK they use the N word in the original of this song but i think it was in the good old Punk Rock trad of no word is sacred if it makes the listener sit up & provoke discusion. It's the oldest trick in the book!Gun Club were a Blues/Punk band just like White Stripes are.Thats why they covered this song because the invented that style.Kinda like how Rockabilly & Punk fused in the early 80's to become Psychobilly.
@hildaatje i agree with you on this point , but i live in a hispanic neighborhood and lots of them are racist against blacks!!!! especially in LA, mexicans and blacks, (brown on black hate) all im saying is you dont have to be white to be racist lol, in this case yeah he wasnt but being multicultured doesnt mean shit
@attic2basement .Well im not white so the cracker thing would work. but it depends what they say. They say" i was hunting some niggers out in the dark" and in the other song its like" left a dead nigger laying by the lake" sounds like a hate crime or something. but i hope they were just making fun of rednecks or something because i hate when people use the N word
@Greenfuzz138 and a lot of the listeners of the Gun Club are white so "nigger" wont bother them the way cracker doesnt bother you and im a hip hop dj, but 30 so grew up on shit like this and i can tell you, i have countless rap records that say things about white people like raoing white women, malcom x was right-"white women should suck the black mans toes-thats her worth--all of this is in rap songs, what the Gun Club says in those above lines is bad but not the worst ive heard in music!
To ElectricLabel: Wow, what a great thing, to have known JLP. Thanks for writing, that is so cool. What a genius. I love hearing him and wish I could have seen him live, (I could have, but was ignorant at the time...just had some records, never saw him, but my interest was re-ignited a while back, now I love his work fanatically.)
This version is not as good as the original, but that's okay. I love both bands, this is an off the cuff live cover, vs the great original. This is good, just not as haunting, evocative or edgy. You have to keep in mind that TWS feel a big obligation to kids who like music. The Buddy Holly lyric substitution works. You now have a song that talks about "an Elvis from Hell" and hunting for Buddy Holly down in the dark. It's less provocative but also effective.
It's a decent cover. I've heard better and I've heard WAYworse. But it's all just a matter of opinion I guess. I still think the original will never be beaten but Im sure everyone who watches this video will agree with that. Doubt there are alot of people looking this up that hasn't heard the Gun Club original.
This cover really blows compared to the original and the comments are mostly retarded. How the hell are you supposed to cop some H from "Buddy Holley in the dark"?
and that's IV as in intravenous not "Poison Ivy" of the Cramps. Fuckin' 'tards......

I sort of think, yeah, well, if they wanted to do a Gun Club song and didn't want to say nigger, why pick one of the two that use the word? They'd probably do Preaching the Blues just as well.
In their defense, this version lacks the country twang that gives the word context in the original. It's pretty clear Pierce was playing the role of a homicidal redneck. That wouldn't have come across here and they'd have been left with the word sitting there like a turd on a buffet table.
niggers? who cares...they say that and worse about us...i saw that one guy..nas i think...has a shirt that says "NIGGER" in bold letter's on the front.......offend in every way....Stripe's own all others.
We did it heaps better at my wedding...preceded by 'she's like heroin to me'....we took it way down Jeffrey Lee...gave em' sex beat as an encore...this is still a good version tho....ps I said Nigger
Not according to the Fire of Love sleeve notes, I quote: 'All songs by Jeffrey Lee Pierce except "For the Love of Ivy" by Jeffrey Lee Pierce and Kid Congo Powers...'
Could be they used an old Mamas and Papas song as a starting point, rather as Pierce used Robert Johnson's 'Preaching Blues' as the starting point for 'Preaching the Blues'.
Stop commenting on if it's racist or not, just listen to the music. If you don't like it, listen to something else, because i am tired as hell of reading the stupid and ignorant comments people have left.
im black i love both versions if gc was racist then y r they a punk blues band ,blues comes from blacks any way white stripes are the best band ive seen in 10 years and gc is awesome.
TRULY AMAZING! I love the intro...and all the soul, yet censored, vocals put into this. DAYUM I wish I was there! RED WHITE BLACK! PEACE LOVE CANDY CANES! MEG LIPS LOOK CHAP IN THIS PICTURE, BTW
Jack's specialty is making things sound like cheese. He sure fucked this one up.The line about Buddy Holly, the original line was written by an actual artist, and this pussy with a guitar was too politically correct to sing it.Wish these kids would die in a crash, like Buddy Holly. The original bad ass lyric is " I was hunting for niggers in the dark." For all you retards out there, they story they were telling was about southern lynching-but Jeff and Kid were hung up on Ivy,thus the name of the song.
Well, you can't really call the Gun Club version good. It lacks balls. This one has that balls. Screw that "I was hunting for niggers in the dark.",, Damn rednecks..
The GC version isn't sung well,, no dynamic singing. When he finishes a sentence the band start hammering their stuff..
why is it then, that Jack cites Jeffrey as an influence-he's singing the mans song, because he wants to be associated with the gun club-
white stripes are a pop group, making music to entertain the masses such as you,the misuse and use the idea of rocknroll and it's unwarranted.they suck.
you don't get it dumbass,it's a story about lynch mobs, and yeah obviously fucking screw 'em,Jeffrey wasn't singing autobiographically-just like when Mic sings sympathy for the devil-suspension of disbelief,Jack White didn't have the balls to sing the line,so instead he added the most dumbfucking substitute,Buddy Holley-is he fucking retarded. He's actually very savvy-he knew his mainstream audience wouldn't understand if he sung nigger.
Ha ha you're right. The Gun Club version is so bad that Jack White loves it and covered it. Strike One. Gun Club are not rednecks, in fact the opposite, you miss the whole point. Strike Two. Gun Club version has more suspense and build up. Which is what the song stands on. His singing works better. Strike three you're fucking out. - Kenny Powers
how is the gun club racist? why don't you pull your head out of your ass,and look some shit up,like Kid Congo,he formed the gun club with Jeffrey, was in the cramps, you can find him on myspace, ask him were the gun club raxcist-he's hispanic hiimself,so was jeffrey, call up ward dotson-ask him. You white stripes fans are the fucking worst.
- Jeffrey Lee Pierce had a japanese girlfriend, the rythym guitarist Kid Congo was/is gay and a mexican and at one point they had british bass player, they were open minded band with a really sick sense of humour...and they didn't like the right wing. Jeffrey hated republicans and said so in several interviews...
"hunting for buddy holly in the dark"
Totally stole the thunder from that line, and for what? to avoid offending blacks? lame. If you're going to drop the racism in a song you cover, don't just change it to be goofy, just drop the whole line. There was so much punch in the original line, it kinda ruined the song for me.

the guy from gun club wasn't racist
i think he actually was obsessed with learning about other cultures
its just a reference he didn't mean to insult anybody

We did it heaps better at my wedding...preceded by 'she's like heroin to me'....we took it way down Jeffrey Lee...gave em' sex beat as an encore...this is still a good version tho....ps I said Nigger

The Song was originally written by John Philips of the Mamas and Papas in 1966.

LISTEN TO crypttonite, THIS MAN IS SPEAKING THE TRUTH.
i personally dont hate the white stripes, i like alot of their stuff
and i dont expect em to be the exact same as g.c. or any other band
but if you prefer this harmless hammering from the destructive danger that is the original song, may you burn in HELL
HELL!

Jack's specialty is making things sound like cheese. He sure fucked this one up.The line about Buddy Holly, the original line was written by an actual artist, and this pussy with a guitar was too politically correct to sing it.Wish these kids would die in a crash, like Buddy Holly. The original bad ass lyric is " I was hunting for niggers in the dark." For all you retards out there, they story they were telling was about southern lynching-but Jeff and Kid were hung up on Ivy,thus the name of the song.

because jack white can be defined as a 'pussy with a guitar'
dumb fuck

Well, you can't really call the Gun Club version good. It lacks balls. This one has that balls. Screw that "I was hunting for niggers in the dark.",, Damn rednecks..
The GC version isn't sung well,, no dynamic singing. When he finishes a sentence the band start hammering their stuff..
Please grow ears.

Anyone that says that jeffrey lee pierce's singing isn't dynamic should be taken to a facility and routinely executed.

Anyone who does say jeffrey lee pierce's singing is dynamic should eaten by a plague of locusts

Have you ever even heard Miami or The Las Vegas Story? Or do you just sit around YouTube watching BBW vids?

why is it then, that Jack cites Jeffrey as an influence-he's singing the mans song, because he wants to be associated with the gun club-
white stripes are a pop group, making music to entertain the masses such as you,the misuse and use the idea of rocknroll and it's unwarranted.they suck.
crypttonite 2 years ago
you don't get it dumbass,it's a story about lynch mobs, and yeah obviously fucking screw 'em,Jeffrey wasn't singing autobiographically-just like when Mic sings sympathy for the devil-suspension of disbelief,Jack White didn't have the balls to sing the line,so instead he added the most dumbfucking substitute,Buddy Holley-is he fucking retarded. He's actually very savvy-he knew his mainstream audience wouldn't understand if he sung nigger.
fucking white stripes.
crypttonite 2 years ago
Ha ha you're right. The Gun Club version is so bad that Jack White loves it and covered it. Strike One. Gun Club are not rednecks, in fact the opposite, you miss the whole point. Strike Two. Gun Club version has more suspense and build up. Which is what the song stands on. His singing works better. Strike three you're fucking out. - Kenny Powers

Maybe he doesn't want to use nigger? It's a choice, is it not? A choice to use the word or not.
Maraguzzi 3 years ago
so the kkk sang "for the love of niggers"?
pazisad 3 years ago
lol yeah the gun club is basically the KKK
iluvjackwhitemost 3 years ago
the gun club's a pretty sweet band.
pazisad 3 years ago
yeah but kinda racist too =P
iluvjackwhitemost 3 years ago
no, i realized it's not racist, they're just crazy.
besides, if they're racist, jack white is racist for covering their track.
pazisad 3 years ago
No... They sang about niggers,, Jack White didn't..
Pay attention..
sonniesam 3 years ago
This may be an alien concept to you, but song lyrics aren't necessarily a person's actual feelings -- that is how 12 year old girls view songs.
neothomist1275 3 years ago 5
Yeah, neothomist1275 is right on that point,,
But still, shooting niggers in the dark is a rather radical lyric
sonniesam 3 years ago
how is the gun club racist? why don't you pull your head out of your ass,and look some shit up,like Kid Congo,he formed the gun club with Jeffrey, was in the cramps, you can find him on myspace, ask him were the gun club raxcist-he's hispanic hiimself,so was jeffrey, call up ward dotson-ask him. You white stripes fans are the fucking worst.
crypttonite 2 years ago
KKK ?
- Jeffrey Lee Pierce had a japanese girlfriend, the rythym guitarist Kid Congo was/is gay and a mexican and at one point they had british bass player, they were open minded band with a really sick sense of humour...and they didn't like the right wing. Jeffrey hated republicans and said so in several interviews...
