Chris certainly was not at her very best here. This was her last year playing and she was 34 years old. Unfortunately, she had many bad days just like this one in 1989. You can totally tell that she was so over Monica's lobs and just wanted the points to end.

Let's face it, the last time Chris had been at her best was probably the '86 French.

I was shocked to read in Monica's book that Chris had sharp words for her in the locker room afterwards, i.e. "Enjoy it now, b/c one day you'll find yourself looking across the net at someone half your age, driven and with nothing to lose!" Or something like this. Monica wrote she didn't understand. Why would she at 15? Surprising lack of judgment and sportsmanship from one of the game's classiest ever champions.
I don't think evert said it in a bad way, I think she was being sincere about how time flies and how one ends upt with their career behind them.
In retrospect, she can be happy that all she had to care about was her tennis (and how to beat navratilova) while Monica ended up stabbed in the back and battling depression for years...
I will NEVER tire of seeing the incredible shot Evert played on the first match point. To my mind, that is what makes her the best player of all time. You just would not get someone like Navratilova or Graf or Court playing an incredible shot like that at that stage!
Monica was later to find out.. what most other pro's on the circut already new, if you beat Chirs the last time you played her; your in trouble, Chirs took her out 6-0,6-2, in their next meeting.

This was my first sighting of Monica I remember thinking ,who is this person and what is that noise she is making... LOL. I couldn't have guessed she would become one of my all time favs.

I don't remember any domination in the rival h2h, but Monica was definitley the dominate player in 91,92, and 93 before the stabbing. No question she was #1 and certainly not her fault Steffi wasn't making it to the slam finals, during that period. Graf made 4 finals during that time - losing 2 to Monica , Moncia lost 1 to Steffi. Monica's Grand Slam match record was 55-1 during that period. That is pretty dominate ... so I think some people translate that to their rivalry. But u r correct.

Seles was No.1 in 91&92, however those were Graf's worst yrs on tour while she was in the top 2. Graf was better head to head, Seles wasn't dominating Graf, which if u recall has been the basis of our debate.
Koslow88 - 92 French was a 10-8 third set, Graf was only 2 points from the match in the third, Seles did win, but that's not domination. While the 6 wins Graf had over Seles b4 the stabbing, only 2 went 3 sets, 4 were easy straight set wins. Graf was better head to head b4 the stabbing, while Seles was better against other's like Sabatini & Sanchez head to head.
grafs wins over seles came when seles was just starting out her first or second year on the tour.while seles was still a rookie.look at the last 5 times they played before her stabbing seles won 4 out of those 5.and the only loss was cause they wouldnt let seles grunt graf complained about it.

I was shocked to read in Monica's book that Chris had sharp words for her in the locker room afterwards, i.e. "Enjoy it now, b/c one day you'll find yourself looking across the net at someone half your age, driven and with nothing to lose!" Or something like this. Monica wrote she didn't understand. Why would she at 15? Surprising lack of judgment and sportsmanship from one of the game's classiest ever champions.

In retrospect, she can be happy that all she had to care about was her tennis (and how to beat navratilova) while Monica ended up stabbed in the back and battling depression for years...

Like I said let me break this down to you for the last time and if you cant see the facts. Seles won ONLY 5 matches against Steffi;.in 1990 the final of the German Open and the French. Steffi was #1 at that time The TWO years later in the 92 French final. So that is 3 wins.

Yes Seles dominated TENNIS for 2 and a half years (91-93) until the stabbing BUT she did not dominate Steffi---whether or not Steffi made the finals to play Monica or lost before the finals....Monica did not dominate someone who she lost to 10 times and only won 5 encounters. I don't remember any domination in the rival h2h, but Monica was definitley the dominate player in 91,92, and 93 before the stabbing. No question she was #1 and certainly not her fault Steffi wasn't making it to the slam finals, during that period. Graf made 4 finals during that time - losing 2 to Monica , Moncia lost 1 to Steffi. Monica's Grand Slam match record was 55-1 during that period. That is pretty dominate ... so I think some people translate that to their rivalry. But u r correct.

You might want to take a closer look at their head to head encounters. No time in their rivalry was Seles ever in the lead. I always thought STEFFI GRAF had something to do with the stabbing of Monica Seles. Graf was the ONLY player that benefitted from the stabbing. Women's tennis suffered from 1993 to 1996 those years were the dark years for women's tennis.

Evert was truly a class act. Listen to how gracious she is to Monica. And notice the fact the Seles (who I am a fan of) does not even acknowledge Evert, who was at the end of her legendary 19 year career. And of interest, the next time they played, at the US Open that fall, Evert gave one of the top 10 performances of her career and took Seles apart 6-0, 6-2.

I don't wanna take anything away from Graf, but before Seles was stabbed she had won 3 out of 4 grand slams for the last 2 years, i really believe that Graf ver would have made it to 22 slams if Seles was competing against her in that period, but that doesn't take away that Graf is a brilliant tennisplayer but it would have been a completely different score of slams if she wasn't stabbed.

She won the most prestigious tennis title Wimbledon 7 times, Seles didn't even come close to winning it. graf threatened to complain before the finals it was all over the newspapers before the match.and graf ducked playing monica after she came back or she just didnt make it to the finals like in the canadian open.

Nevertheless, Graf didn't complain about her grunting & you Seles fans use that as an excuse for why Graf DESTROYED Seles in the final, while Tauziat & Navratilova did complain & still lost to Seles in the Quarters & Semi's, so your argument is a pathetic excuse for the loss, with no evidence to back it up.

Seles wins 3 games in the entire match & u Seles fans can't accept that Graf was just better that day....be realistic. Graf did beat Seles twice in 91...so it's not like head to head Seles was dominating Graf.

i think seles showed her domination over graf by winning 4 out of the last 5 meetings between her and graf.and only losing one cause they wouldnt let her grunt in the final.

LOL, no she didn't....Graf won 3 of their last 5 meetings b4 the stabbing. I don't know what record books, you are looking at...but they must be from your fantasy Seles library.

funny how seles won 3 french opens,3 australian opens and 2 us opens all before she was stabbed while graf was playing,she managed to win 8 grand slams prior to being 18 while graf won only 3,so you need to look at who dominated tennis before seles was stabbed

Seles was No.1 in 91&92, however those were Graf's worst yrs on tour while she was in the top 2. Graf was better head to head, Seles wasn't dominating Graf, which if u recall has been the basis of our debate.

Koslow88 - 92 French was a 10-8 third set, Graf was only 2 points from the match in the third, Seles did win, but that's not domination. While the 6 wins Graf had over Seles b4 the stabbing, only 2 went 3 sets, 4 were easy straight set wins. Graf was better head to head b4 the stabbing, while Seles was better against other's like Sabatini & Sanchez head to head.

grafs wins over seles came when seles was just starting out her first or second year on the tour.while seles was still a rookie.look at the last 5 times they played before her stabbing seles won 4 out of those 5.and the only loss was cause they wouldnt let seles grunt graf complained about it.

Bottomline, Seles would have won a lot more Slams if she hadn't been stabbed. Just like that commercial, life comes at you fast...really, really fast. Seles made a good comeback though. I love how in this clip, Seles looks as if she could be a player from 2007. She really is the pioneer of the modern player.

sometimes its so sad to watch old monica footage when you just know she probably would have garnered double the amount of slams she holds now. her career was cut so short. she was on her way to becoming the greatest ever. she OWNED everyone, there was truly no stopping her.

Her consistency over an 18 year career is beyond comprehension. Her record of 13 years straight with one slam a year at least will never be touched. She was never ranked lower than number 4 in the world. The 52 Big Four Semis out of 56 is just sick!

I think for me Rogerpetes is the main issue...it is totally unfair that Monica only (only!!!!) has 9 GS's. The stabbing stopped her winning a lot lot more...and you can argue this bcos in GS finals Monica used to beat up on everyone, Graf included...also Monica was young when she was stabbed...she was only going to get stronger and add more to her game...

Steffi, for all her fantastic tennis knows that some of her GS wins past 1993 were fortunate ones as her only real rival was out of the game...she knows it and her fans know it deep down...i don't doubt for a minute that raf would have won more GS titles but if Hamburg hadn't happened it wouldn't have been as many as she actually collected...
