@rickatart Don't get me wrong, The Stooges are possibly my favorite band of all time (toss-up between them, The Velvet Underground, The Doors, and The Rolling Stones), but Black Sabbath is pretty bad ass.
this is history man if you guys ever get the chance to see iggy do it cus you'll be in the presents og history that guy is going to be one of the greatest of all time originators so when its all said and done you can say i saw that man live and trust me when isay this you wont be dissapionted and im into hip hop i was totally out of my element but i had a really good time unbelivable trust!!!
the stooges are the best punk rock band to have ever existed, many artist try to out do him but the truth is they will never accomplish so might as well quit!! thats just my opinion
@rickatart Sabbath is over blown ? Silliest thing Ive heard on utube in quite some time. Why don't you people stfu about what you don't like, and instead use this forum to expose young listeners to bands you enjoy..WHAT A CONCEPT
@ManilaSyndicate yeah, no offence meant to other acts, I have them in the collection ; it's just an opinion. I like Aerosmith, Stones, ZZ Top, loads of others. Simply put, when I heard the first three Stooges albums, it moved everything else to the back of the bus.
this is why i love this shit: i'm picturing all the music during 1969 and none of it sounds like this. this song is the blueprint for the next 20-30 years of punk & heavy metal.
the stooges were punk rock. proto-punk isnt a genre it means they were a punk band that orginated before 1977 and the term "punk rock" was invented its punk rock they just didnt have a name for it yet had the stooges got together in 77/78 they wud have been considered a punk band without a doubt in my mind. the same cannot be said for mc5 tho or velvet underground which is why i say The Stooges were the first punk band ever
How cool it was to see these guys play in Detroit in '07 at the Fox Theater. Oh I wish I was like the rest of the fans dancing with Iggy on the stage :)
Ahh...the old "who invented punk" arguments - yet again...getting boring now. Just enjoy the fucking music and leave that to the historians. Lifes too short.
mikexlong - I know what you mean. But, the first Stooges album was not the ugliest out there. Top 40 music was the ugliest. Why? The Stooges, genuinely expressed the anger that was underlying turbulent rebellious times. The direct non poetical lyrics mixed with simple war drum / wah wah pulses empathized with you...some understanding, a declaration of freedom, and fueled you to kick ass.
And it made you happy. Anyway, that's what I recall.
moLeOnPoT ...you are correct. I was there at that place and time. The Stooges ( originally the Psychedelic Stooges ) were just doing their thing. I can tell you that within the music scene in Detroit 1967-1970 they were always stand out. It did not matter who they warmed up for. I loved them but not everyone took them seriously. They faded away until they were resurrected by British Punk in the mid-70's
ah and i might add that i guess in the beginning neither the stooges nor the ramones saw themselves as "Punk" or as the creators of a new style of music...they just wanted to play their own understanding of what Rock n Roll is supposed to be...let's thank them!
the stooges were close to punk in many songs. "cock in my pocket" and "i got a right" for example...but still these songs also sound like drugges up avantgarde while the ramones sound was much more straight.
rockandrollchuck i agree with you...the line has to be drawn somewhere. there are bunch of bands that had punk elements before the ramones, like the ones you mention, or the sonics, los saicos, ton steine scherben (german band)...but the ramones defined punkrock for me. its about the atmosphere...listen to the ramones first record. it will be an entirely other feeling than you get from the stooges...
I really love this song. I prefer the alternate mix (non John Cale) on disc 2 of the the mastered CD though. Pretty much sums the essence conjugal bliss gone sour. The best part is the symetrical simplicity of the gender inverted lyrics married to Ron's incomperable proto-bummer rock chord sequence, Minimalism at its best. Makes me smile every time I hear it.
Fantastic. I just close my eyes, bow my head, and lose it when this song comes through the speakers. Sexy, driving, menacing - The Stooges and the MC5 had that macho sound that still made one's loins stir.
The lyrics are simple but moving, they have this resonating vibe, a timeless feel to it. Jesus.
they didn't set thier mind or vision on "inventing proto punk"......they just played rock n roll dirtier than thier peers, and a bunch on posers followed them
@SlaytanicMegaforce proto means before it means the stooges were a punk band before the concept of punk was fully devolped as a specific style back then at the the time they were just fucking puzzled and ddint know wut to call it. but proto-punk isnt a genre
@daven58100 I was at the Stooges shows in at the Whiskey in LA in '73, and I can vouch for the fact that Iggy went off the stage & into the waiting arms of the audience (where they did unspeakable things to him, LOL.)
Ive always hated that title of "Proto Punk". The Stooges are Rock n roll. I dont get why everything always needs to be categorized and put into a genre and things have to get so technical. The term had no existance when they were around
@SlaytanicMegaforce again....proto punk isn't a genre. it was a term used to categorize the bands that basically started punk rock. what you want to say is that "they invented punk rock u fucking dick"
@SlaytanicMegaforce dude you are not dumb for saying that at all... I applaud you for even knowing the term proto punk and I also applaud you for posting this song. you are the man in my book!
@arseropes for example, you can call Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Black Sabbath proto-metal because they are the forefathers of metal (room for debate). No one says I listen to "proto-metal" though...you know? They say I listen to metal or classic rock (genres). Same with protopunk. Stooges, MC5 and NY Dolls are commonly considered the forefathers of punk (room for debate). They term those bands protopunk. You don't say "I listen to protopunk" It's all just rock and roll anyway.
