I spent some weeks at RAF Conningsby in the early '50's when I was a pre school toddler (Ca1951-53) - My uncle was based there living in Married quarters. I still have vivid memories: the aircraft based there were either Lancaster or Shackleton (similar appearance) the aircrew had fir-lined leather flying jackets - I remember them sunbathing beside their aircraft on the dispersals. I remember the fuel bowsers, the lorries & the AC1s who delivered the coal. Once RAF gets into you you're hooked
@staffsmole It stands for Quick Reaction Alert I think. Basically, they've detected an unknown aeroplane in British airspace and scramble fighters to intercept.
I was stationed there in 1949. We had Mosquiti's the Lancs and shackletons were long gone You must be older than you think! It closed for rebuilding for jets in 1950 139 squadron moved to Hemswell
I wish they painted them something other than grey. I love the Lightning's bare metal finish. And the Tornado GR1 with camo was nice too.

And they're really working that Spit and Hurricane, don't often hear them revving up that much. Those pilots must have such a good time. Lucky gits.
