To criticize our country's greatest president in this manner is just plain wrong. Shame on Bachmann for this attack on FDR with all of her false propaganda. He took office when the depression was at its worst and when he died 12 years later the United States was the most powerful country this world has ever seen. The defense rests your honor!!
@roosevelt1933 What "defense" numbnuts? FDR took office in '33, the depression officially ended in 1947. A whole 14 years after FDR took office. Yeah some "success". Hell there was even a recession in 1937. Look up the famous quote by FDR's treasury secretary and the planner of New Deal, Henry Morgenthau Jr.
Michelle Bachmann knows NOTHING about history or anything else. The stock market crashed in 1929 and that is basically when the depression began which was a full four years before FDR even took office and unemploymeny was at 25% when FDR took office. All he did was fix the mistakes of Coolidge and Hoover. She should be ashamed of herself for disrespecting the best President ever.
@roosevelt1933 Sorry, YOU don't know what you're talking about. The '29 crash was the first of 4 phases, & it was a recession. It was made worse by Hoover's interventions, & turned into a disaster by Roosevelt's.
Roosevelt gave us 25% unemployment; 9 million unemployed on Pearl Harbor Day. He drafted 11 million men in response to the attack, which in one respect ended the depression.
Bachmann is far ahead of the rest of you clowns, despite flubbing the name of the tariff.
@slkinia It is fitting that fans of Bachman lie about history the same way she does. This shows the same ingorance. Unemployment was 25% when Roosevelt took office.
It's the same kind of lying that calls this economy Obama's economy. The crash happened in Sept 08, when Bush was President. Obama was handed a blown up economy. The stock market decline ended in April 09, just after Obama signed the economic stimulus package. The investor class has recovered. They're sitting on cash.
@jackhammer111 If FDR was so successful, explain the recession of 1937-38.
When Obama took office the unemployment was 7.7%. He has spent $5 trillion in office, most of which went to stimulus and bailouts. With that amount of money every American family should have a Mercedes outside their homes.
'The 'recession F.D.R. had to deal with'? What school did she go to...Worst economic time under Coolidge? Evey historian, economist and history book I heard or read said the worst year of the Great Depression - not recession, Rep Bachmann - was the year F.D.R. was elected: 1932. Thought I'd never see the day when someone else out-Palined Palin.
Minnesota Republicans, hang your heads in shame. This dipstick is entirely your fault. Her criticism of FDR is absolutely wrong. She's even got the damn chronology of events wrong! Michele Bachmann is an absolute embarrassment to this country. She can't simply say she "misspoke" on this one. It is unbelievable that someone so stupid can be running for president.
@formerlymiddleclass Oh come on now ! you dont enjoy her revisionist history lessons. Its not like everybody has the internet ya know, where we can fact check her comments.
Might as well pile on. Her recession that was worse than the great depression??? occurred during Harding's administration, not Coolidge's. Keep in mind that these three in the 20's were the greatest Republican presidents of all time. The problem is that the robots who support her will never fact-check anything that agrees with their misguided views of history and politics.
Uhh...Read some basic history. When Harding took office in 1921, the official unemployment rate was around 12%. We experienced about a 25% recession. In one year, it was over.
The Smoot-Hawley tariff didn't contribute to the Great Depression much at all either. Those who claim that it hurt US exports don't cite much data, while the State Department records don't show a drop in exports. It didn't help, but it doesn't appear to be a major cause.
"It killed international trade for us. We hiked the rates, however,so did other countries."
There isn't much evidence of that happening; it's a myth. Alfred Eckes, former commissioner of the US International Trade Commission, reviewed all of the US export data and said that "only two or three countries lodged formal diplomatic protests."(US Trade Policy...,p.55).
@mediblue9, US exports to countries that passed counter-tariffs actually fell less than US exports to other countries that did not hike tariff rates. This means that the Smoot-Hawley tariff could not have been responsible for the decline in exports. US exports dropped because the economies of its trading partners fell.
Also, the Smoot-Hawley tariff wasn't nearly as high as history reports it to be. Many goods weren't taxed at all in port. Overall, the average rate for all goods was 20%.
If you don't believe me, read Alfred Eckes' book "US trade policy: history, theory, and the WTO". Eckes was a former US trade commissioner so he's dealt with real data.
"the "Roaring 20s were a time of great growth"?????"
Yes, it was a time of great growth. From 1921 to 1929, the GDP of the US grew approximately by 25%. It's hard not to consider that great growth for a leading economy.
Really unbelievable how little of the facts the woman knows. HOWEVER, The Smoot-Hawley Tariff, written up by two Republicans and signed into law by a Republican President was signed by a very bad president--Herbert Hoover--who many historians acknowledge applied most of the same policies as FDR would when he took office. Coolidge detested the man, and refused to apply his advice when he was his Sec. of Commerce, which did allow the Recession of the 1920s to be resolved.
Republicans are always rewriting there history and blaming the dems for what they themselves did. It's because republican supporters are dumber then dog poop and always fall for it.

When you cut taxes and that leads to 9 years of growth that end in the worldwide depression that bankrupts nearly everyone....that's not a successful economy.
the rushie herbert hoover neocons is the obstruction party of NO ... the neocons are mind controlled mega ditto heads ... and now the rushies are bitching about how the jedi knight obama has already failed ... after crashing the banks and insurance companies and the entire world economy ... they want obama to turn the economy around in less than two years ... even fdr took a decade and a world war to turn the economy around .. i tell you the rushies are liars, liars, liars .. and psychopaths too
had run a budget surplus every single year of his own presidency, and he held the federal budget roughly constant despite the roaring prosperity (and surging tax receipts) of the 1920s. In contrast to Coolidge — who was a true small-government president — Herbert Hoover managed to turn his initial $700 million surplus into a $2.6 billion deficit by 1932.
keep in mind that Hoover's $2.6 billion deficit occurred because he spent $4.6 billion while only taking in $2 billion in tax receipts.
Thus, as a percentage of the overall budget, the 1932 deficit was astounding — it would translate into a $3.3 trillion deficit in 2007
The real reason unemployment soared throughout Hoover's term was not his aversion to deficits, or his infatuation with the gold standard. No, the one thing that set Hoover apart from all previous US presidents was his insistence to big business that they not cut wage rates in response to the economic collapse.
Hoover held a faulty notion that workers' purchasing power was the source of an economy's strength, and so it seemed to him that it would set in motion a vicious cycle if businesses began laying off workers and slashing paychecks because of slackening demand.
The results speak for themselves. During the heartless "liquidationist" era before Hoover, depressions (or "panics") were typically over within two years. Yes, it was surely no fun for workers to see their paychecks shrink quite rapidly,
She is wrong about Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, but Hoover and FDR were responsible.
Hoover by focusing on aggregate monetary conditions such as total wage payments, completely ignored that physical resources had to be rearranged in order to correct the imbalance.
Hoover also was of the false assumption that higher wages were needed, but ultimately higher wages do not create prosperity but rather are a result of it. It matters not how many greenbacks one has if no labor has gone into production
(P.S when I said she was wrong it was about the person signing the act)
The only way for the economy under such conditions to recover is for the market to transform into a sustainable way, via the shuffling of workers and resources. Enterprises must be shut down, releasing workers and freeing resources that would otherwise be used.
One could construct an analogous argument for the computer industry, in which the government passes regulation to slow down improvements in operating systems and processing speed. After all, how can computer manufacturers possibly remain viable if consumers are always waiting for a faster model to become available? The solution to this paradox, of course, is that consumers do decide to bite the bullet and buy a computer,
knowing full well that they would be able to buy the same performance for less money, if they were willing to wait (There's no point in holding out for lower prices but never actually buying!) (pp. 689)
ok so how many people need to comment that she got it wrong...i'm sure she was told of this and besides do you think she reads your comments...whatever everyone slips up and you people think you're so high and mighty...has every single comment you made in your entire life been 100% factual no so shut up and get over it.. Your fucking stupid president thought there were 57 states eat a dik and enjoy it. and please be offended because i know this is oh so offensive (sarcasm alert)
Dutchy420, I realize that everyone makes mistakes, having made many in my own life. However, if you are a congressman representing a substantial amount of people, wouldn't it make sense to do a little research before getting up in front of the house and speaking? It's embarrassing to the American people that we have politicians this stupid.
Does this dumb bitch not realize that the "Roaring Twenties" ended when the stock market crashed in 1929 under Hoover, a REPUBLICAN? The Smoot-Hawley Act (not the Hoot-Smalley Act) was signed by Hoover, NOT FDR. Also Ms. Bachmann, the recession became the Great Depression BEFORE FDR got into office. When FDR first got into office it was no longer a recession by then. At least get your history right, if you're going to make a point about lower taxes. Dumb bitch. Idiocy has run a muck in the GOP.
In May 1930, a petition was signed by 1028 economists in the United States asking President Herbert Hoover to veto the legislation. Automobile executive Henry Ford spent an evening at the White House trying to convince Hoover to veto the bill, calling it "an economic stupidity".[7] J. P. Morgan's chief executive Thomas W. Lamont said he "almost went down on my knees to beg Herbert Hoover to veto the asinine Hawley-Smoot tariff."[8]
She went to roral oberts university law school?? Remember when Bush delivered his state of the union address for the last time and he was signing it on his way out of the house chamber?? .... Michelle looked like she was going to drop to her knees and unzip Bush's fly right there on the house floor in front of the cameras ......... actually she does kind of look like she has a past, or perhaps a future, in the porn industry ...... what a frigging bimbo
The Republicans have lost 60 seats in the last 2 years. That's about 600 aide positions lost. If you're a republican staffer right now, you're just grateful to have a job.
This woman is an idiot. Smoot-Hawley was signed into law under long before Roosevelt even thought about running for president. When he did run for president he hung it on Hoover. Smoot and Hawley were Republicans. Roosevelt did good and bad but he didn't do this.
It's so pathetic that these clowns will never actually realize how disgusting what they say is, soon or probably for the rest of their lives. One can only hope that in the future, near their death, they are made to watch all the terrible things they have said and done and are stricken with the fear of the god they believe in that they are heading straight to the hell they have envisioned in their feeble minds.
@twistlaw Sounds like you need to crack a history book: President Truman vetoed the Taft-Hartley Act but was overridden by a Republican majority Congress and it then became law.
you know i finally found a person who studied econs. I just learned this stuff in my first year of college. It's crazy how people can't even understand such simple concepts
She got most of her arguments right. If you look into FDR's new deals, most of them were disasters. Government can never regulate the market. The roaring 20s was actually because the gov cut taxes, disbanded portion of the military (b/c it was after ww1), and they also brought down the inflation rate by stopping injecting money into the system. FDR was just as bad as Hoover, but I think Ronald Reagan's economic policies sorta became the new model for the republicans after his success.
How do you define FDR's "new deals" as disasters, considering that his policies lowered unemployment from 25% to 10%, and how do you define Reagan's tax cutting policies as a success when the National Debt was less than a trillion dollars when he assumed office but was nearly tripled to THREE trillion when he left?
I can just see it now, a bunch of misogynists thinking "Isn't it cute when a woman tries to sound smart?" Thanks Bachmann for being such an embarrassment to all women, you ignorant slut!
Why does it seem like there are no intelligent, decent repubs anymore? This party's platform is devision, hatred, racism and ignorance and they're proud of it. Barry Goldwater would never have been a member of today's party.
Did you read John Dean's book "Conservatives Without Compassion?" Dean was originally a Goldwater Republican, and became good friends with Goldwater. Just before Goldwater's death, Dean asked him why he wasn't active in the Republican party anymore, and he answered (to paraphrase) because he couldn't stand what a bunch of gutter-sniping, petty minded character assasisns the GOP had become under Gingrich.
You can look up the exact quote in Dean's book. It's actually called "Conservatives without Conscience." Sorry, I got the name wrong in my previous comment.
She truly is one of the most stupid people in Congress. She is too deep in lalaland to even speak about anything and reasonably remain in reality. Bachann should be in an environment that is more appropriate for her: Mad TV. Rev. Bookburn - Radio Volta
I guess that if mixing-up a few letters in a word is a "disappointment" for the voters of Minnesota, then the voters of the U.S.A. should be devastated by Obama's gaffes while speaking. Uhhhh.....ummm, move up the teleprompter....uh, wash your hands and inflate your tires...uh......hey now, punished with a baby.....uuhhhhh,....a breath-a-lizer for asthma........uh.... how do you say in Austrian? ...uh, I got ahead of the teleprompter...go... more..move that up.......uhh....
Does this woman have even one correct statement to present on the house floor? Absolutely NO grasp of facts, dates or history. The act was Smoot-Halley,brought by two repubs and signed by Hoover WTF?
@HistorynotHisStory In the ER where I work it is called a psych evaluation. Too bad members of Congress don't go through this before they are sworn into office...
Keep dreaming little left wing lib...a lot of congressmen's terms will be up in two years and she represents conservativism at it's best and we'll need her to recover from the economic depression and the second 911 in the future...and the fact she is hot doesn't hurt either...
Continuing a fine Republican tradition of blaming the very things people in your own party did on democrats who had comparatively little to do with it. Get the names wrong, the party and dates wrong, stand up and say the words witha knowing smile and with conviction and voila! History goes poof and all we have is the grand old oral tradition of the republican party to tell us about our nation's history.
Republicans broke the constitution 3 times, by not allowing criminals a trial, torturing them without a trial, and wiretapping without consent from congress
Where did you get THAT little nugget of from? I assume you probably got it from the Ludwig von Mises Institute website, because only the wingnut Austrian's define the end of the Depression as 1947.
What 1/3 cut in taxes and 1/2 cut in spending are you talking about?
How did the Fed raise inflation?
(Other than that, though, I agree with you on HR1207! We need to pass it.)
Every time The Fed prints money in excess of GDP they increase inflation. We have a projected deficit of $1.7 Trillion in 2010 alone. With Trillion dollar deficits for years to come. That will cause massive inflation. So yea The Fed is the only entity that can cause inflation. No increase in the money supply, no inflation. Before 1913 one ounce of gold was a $20 double eagle. Now one ounce is over $900. Our currency has been inflated over 4500% in less than 100 years.
The original mandate of The Federal Reserve was to expand or contract the money supply to keep inflation in check and to allow for monetary flexibility. Yet the economy has been contracting at a time when The Fed is expanding at unpresidented levels. That goes completely against the mandate and will create massive inflation. When has The Fed ever contracted the money supply? If the Fed did their job our dollar wouldn't be falling through the floor against foreign currencies.
Actually, one of its mandates is to moderate business cycles by raising or lowering interest rates to deflate bubbles and re-inflate troughs. A method which can also be used to lower, rather than increase inflation.
Inflation was 13.5% in 1981. Paul Volker jacked the interest rates up to 20%, and inflation was back down to 3% by 1983 (at the cost of causing the 1981 recession, of course).
Holy fucking shit, it's a small miracle this woman was born with a functioning brain stem, though I'm still not convinced she doesn't have handlers that remind her to BREATHE every now and then.
so the whole peanut/salmonella scare was a delayed sleeper plot as well. It all seems so clear now. It's all just cover for the planned Zombie take over led by the clones of Hitlers boots.
The recession Coolage face wasn't as bad as the GREAT DEPRESSION
Lower taxes & lower regualations caused a huge economic boom, then the largest economic collapse in history occured. Good thinking you fucking air-head wack-job fuck-tard duche sucking syncopathic cunt

Bellita: How cool you are to call people "stupid" while making spelling mistakes. Or maybe you were referring to Wally Backman, the former MLB shortstop who filed bankruptcy? Either way, you are the poster child for irony. Can you teach us how to engage in "smart fucking?" LOL.
You're the idiot for not realizing it's more than just a spelling mistake. Smoot-Hawley was passed by republicans and signed by Herbert Hoover. FDR campaigned against it. Go read a history book, or better yet, finish Highschool.
What a Moron! I can't believe this idiot had the audacity to run for president.

This all happened amidst a collapse in tax receipts, a decline in economic activity, and amidst the price deflation of the 1930's.
This led to unprecedented peacetime deficits, something FDR railed against in his 1932 campaign.
In contrast Hoovers predecessor Calvin Coolage
ConstitutionSupportr 2 years ago 2
had run a budget surplus every single year of his own presidency, and he held the federal budget roughly constant despite the roaring prosperity (and surging tax receipts) of the 1920s.
ConstitutionSupportr 2 years ago 2
Thus, as a percentage of the overall budget, the 1932 deficit was astounding — it would translate into a $3.3 trillion deficit in 2007
The real reason unemployment soared throughout Hoover's term was not his aversion to deficits, or his infatuation with the gold standard. No, the one thing that set Hoover apart from all previous US presidents was his insistence to big business that they not cut wage rates in response to the economic collapse.
ConstitutionSupportr 2 years ago
Hoover held a faulty notion that workers' purchasing power was the source of an economy's strength, and so it seemed to him that it would set in motion a vicious cycle if businesses began laying off workers and slashing paychecks because of slackening demand.
The results speak for themselves. During the heartless "liquidationist" era before Hoover, depressions (or "panics") were typically over within two years. Yes, it was surely no fun for workers to see their paychecks shrink quite rapidly,
ConstitutionSupportr 2 years ago 2
but it ensured a quick recovery, and, in any event, the blow was cushioned because prices in general would fall too.
ConstitutionSupportr 2 years ago
I disagree with her on Foreign Policy, but at least she understands economics.
Keynesian economics rules the world now, but only because of corrupt corporations.
ConstitutionSupportr 2 years ago
She is wrong about Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, but Hoover and FDR were responsible.
Hoover by focusing on aggregate monetary conditions such as total wage payments, completely ignored that physical resources had to be rearranged in order to correct the imbalance.
Hoover also was of the false assumption that higher wages were needed, but ultimately higher wages do not create prosperity but rather are a result of it. It matters not how many greenbacks one has if no labor has gone into production
ConstitutionSupportr 2 years ago
of goods.
(P.S when I said she was wrong it was about the person signing the act)
The only way for the economy under such conditions to recover is for the market to transform into a sustainable way, via the shuffling of workers and resources. Enterprises must be shut down, releasing workers and freeing resources that would otherwise be used.
ConstitutionSupportr 2 years ago
To quote Robert Murphy
One could construct an analogous argument for the computer industry, in which the government passes regulation to slow down improvements in operating systems and processing speed. After all, how can computer manufacturers possibly remain viable if consumers are always waiting for a faster model to become available? The solution to this paradox, of course, is that consumers do decide to bite the bullet and buy a computer,

Here's some Wiki education.
Hoover was pressured to sign.

59swl 3 months ago
She got most of her arguments right. If you look into FDR's new deals, most of them were disasters. Government can never regulate the market. The roaring 20s was actually because the gov cut taxes, disbanded portion of the military (b/c it was after ww1), and they also brought down the inflation rate by stopping injecting money into the system. FDR was just as bad as Hoover, but I think Ronald Reagan's economic policies sorta became the new model for the republicans after his success.
videofn 2 years ago
How do you define FDR's "new deals" as disasters, considering that his policies lowered unemployment from 25% to 10%, and how do you define Reagan's tax cutting policies as a success when the National Debt was less than a trillion dollars when he assumed office but was nearly tripled to THREE trillion when he left?

Bachmann's Errors:
1. It was Warren Harding, not Coolidge, that dealt with the early 1920s recession. Harding was the one who cut taxes in the early 1920s.
2. The Hoot-Smalley tariff was actually called the Smoot-Hawley tariff, and it was not FDR that enacted it, it was Hoover.

President Obama is doing his best, I give him that.
But the Fed Raised inflation, NOBODY VOTED FOR INFLATION.

Good luck to you.
chewbaca1989 2 years ago
Where did you get THAT little nugget of from? I assume you probably got it from the Ludwig von Mises Institute website, because only the wingnut Austrian's define the end of the Depression as 1947.
What 1/3 cut in taxes and 1/2 cut in spending are you talking about?
How did the Fed raise inflation?
(Other than that, though, I agree with you on HR1207! We need to pass it.)
OlivierdeAthos 2 years ago
Every time The Fed prints money in excess of GDP they increase inflation. We have a projected deficit of $1.7 Trillion in 2010 alone. With Trillion dollar deficits for years to come. That will cause massive inflation. So yea The Fed is the only entity that can cause inflation. No increase in the money supply, no inflation. Before 1913 one ounce of gold was a $20 double eagle. Now one ounce is over $900. Our currency has been inflated over 4500% in less than 100 years.
mickeysears 2 years ago
"Every time The Fed prints money in excess of GDP they increase inflation"
I'm not sure what you mean. Money is printed by the Treasury Department, through the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, not the Federal Reserve Bank.
The GDP is always in excess of the number of printed dollars in circulation.
OlivierdeAthos 2 years ago
The original mandate of The Federal Reserve was to expand or contract the money supply to keep inflation in check and to allow for monetary flexibility. Yet the economy has been contracting at a time when The Fed is expanding at unpresidented levels. That goes completely against the mandate and will create massive inflation. When has The Fed ever contracted the money supply? If the Fed did their job our dollar wouldn't be falling through the floor against foreign currencies.
mickeysears 2 years ago
Actually, one of its mandates is to moderate business cycles by raising or lowering interest rates to deflate bubbles and re-inflate troughs. A method which can also be used to lower, rather than increase inflation.
Inflation was 13.5% in 1981. Paul Volker jacked the interest rates up to 20%, and inflation was back down to 3% by 1983 (at the cost of causing the 1981 recession, of course).
OlivierdeAthos 2 years ago
You don't have a voice in voting for or against inflation. Congress is shackled from keeping the Federal Reserve accountable.
Inflation is the most insidious and evil of all taxes, it hurts the middle class and poor the most.
It is created when the Federal Reserve prints money, MONOPOLY money.
WWII productive capacity went to war, shortages for the public were in fuel, oil, raw materials.
Call your representatives and support HR 1207!
