I saw these guys in Sacramento twice. Once with Jeff Beck and then with Page.
I remember the Page venue. It was pretty small and he was using a violin bow with his
guitar. My band does a couple of their tunes. They were great. I'd like to do "New York City Blues" and "Still I'm Sad". Gotta convince the other guys down the road.
I heard that Pete said the n word in front of Hendrix at a party & he tried meeting him at the airport as Jimi was leaving to say he was sorry and was basically told to f--- off.
@mjazzguitar When Hendrix burst on the scene in London 9/66. Pete Townsend told his good mate J. Beck that this Jimi man is coping your riffs and style! From then on, Beck would turn his back to the audience if he knew Hendrix was in the house!

A great tune for ending an old year and beginning a new year. As for me, I need to find The Way-Back Machine. 1965/1966 were fantastic for me. A happy and hopeful 2012 to planet earth.
That's a myth. All 3 guitarists would have made it with or without the Yardbirds. All 3 of them became famous after they left the Yardbirds, While they were in the Yardbirds their names were not well known.
That's very cool of Pete. If he meant it in his opinion that's fine, but going from factual evidence, there is no proof that he was right saying they were awful.
At 16, I was mad about the Y/Bs...along with so many great bands back then..my local jukebox was forever on with the likes of these,"The Who", "Spencer Davis", "The Kinks", The Zombies", The Move", "Cream", "The Animals", "Small Faces"---etc,etc,etc.....As good as a lot of the bands of today are & I realise all is relative to when you are born and youth etc, somehow,I feel that the genuine music that was unenhanced by anything "modern" will one day become special again when boredom sets in xxK
Can u believe that Pete Townshend said in an 80's interview about Clapton, that the Yardbirds were a shambles and that Eric was the only talented one. What a damn foolish comment.
@vogelmandrie so true, nobody seems to ever mention him in music mags or anywhere, its strange,he's been gone since 1975 but why has there never been any books out about the guy,to me he is an important figure in 1960's music & he looked just so cool! One of the great british 1960's rock icons!
@67psych It's cause there too busy remembering the stones, beatles and many things happening with music in the 70's and 60's, im sure he has and i have seen it in magazines and some books around, but not with as much feeling and respect as it should be.
Most likely my favorite Yardbirds song. Can anyone suggest what studio albums are their best and what I should get? I already have The Yardbirds Greatest Hits, and I'm trying to become a bigger fan, so please, suggest some albums I could get. Thanks!
@CMD9889 Though it's certainly not too popular amongst most fans of The Yardbirds, I personally think "Little Games", with Jimmy Page on guitar, is their best album.
Sure, "Rave Up" has all the best known songs...but that's not my point.
If you want a good mix of the Clapton, Beck, & Page era, respectively, I would recommend getting the "Ultimate Yardbirds" boxset...it's a two disc set, covering all eras quite intensively (they do leave out a few gems), and it comes with a nice booklet.

Wow!!! If not for the Yardbirds, we wouldn't have the following legendary guitarists:
(1) Eric Clapton;
(2) Jeff Beck; and
(3) Jimmy Page.

@cameltooth1 - Agree entirely - I was there then and that comment was totally out of place. I wonder if Pete has regretted saying it?
paul72kate 2 months ago
@cameltooth1 ---Townsend has since "deeply regretted" saying that and said he knew better...
searunrd1 2 months ago
@cameltooth1 Pete also tried to write a whole bunch of rock operas because he wanted to change music forever.
Spoilers: Robert Fripp beat him to the punch.

Great classic!!! Thanks to The Yardbirds, for having 3 legendary guitar players play at one time: Eric "Slowhand" Clapton, Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page!
They look pretty cool with their suits.
