  • Cousin Steve doing his thing.. Lol

  • great lead...Steve Gulley is awesome singer

  • Barry was born with no fingers on his left hand, but what a nice guy and one heck of a picker and singer.

  • really does my head in when lead singer holds .......now dooooooonnt..........forget.... really is quite irritating

  • good god. this band is incredible.

  • this is the only song i can play banjo on. lol

  • WOAH good job!

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE that banjo! Wonderful sound guys.

  • Barry Abernathy is my favorite banjo picker...regardless of his handicap, he's an awesome musician...true overcomer...I seen them at the Claremore Chili & Blugrass Festival in Claremore, OK ... He's also a dynamic performer and a crowd favorite

  • Barry Abernathy - Winner of 1997's Banjo Player of the Year award from the Society for the Preservation of Blue Grass Music in America, Barry began his career performing bluegrass gospel with Silver Creek, but first came to national attention as a member of one of the decade's hottest bluegrass bands, IIIrd Tyme Out. From 1994 to 1998, the Georgia-born banjo player/lead vocalist was a featured member of Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver, recording 5 albums with the award-winning ensemble.

  • The perfect bluegrass song.

  • Absolutely agree....the best bluegrass song ever.

  • Agreed! I also love the Mule Skinner vocal plug there near the end

  • If you guys haven't noticed, the banjo player plays over top with what is left of his hand from a accident. He is absolutely awesome!!!

  • The banjo player was born without fingers on that hand, it wasn't from an accident.

  • DuneRidr, I didn't mean to offend you. I have seen this group perform at many bluegrass festivals. The banjo players name is Barry Abernathy. It is common knowledge Barry was born with the deformity on his left hand. Barry has explained this many times. I just wanted to set the record straight. I see you have a large vocabulary.

  • i still cant believe steve gulley left :( i loved standin in the cold kentucky rain and how strong do my walls have to be :( :(

  • Way to go! Love their sound. Really like the old Jimmy Martin version of this song.

  • I love these guys!

  • personaly i dont like country music but you have to respect bluegrass for the musicianship. and especialy these guys, if only for the fact that the banjo player doesnt have any left hand fingers

  • That's some mighty fine pickin' and a sanging!

  • boy i miss seeing steve singing with them. Grasstowne just dont cut it and Josh shilling sounds like michael mcdonald

  • Good job, gentlemen! Love this song.

  • I heard Steve gully and Grasstown sounded "ok" at Renfro Vally.

  • There great!!!!

  • Ste Gulley's singin' makes me smile =) I cant' wait to see Grasstown!

  • Back when they were still playing bluegrass, I love it!!

  • good stuff

  • i was at this festival too!

  • Loved that tune when Jimmy used to do it. You guys are great! I've seen Barry pick that banjo before. Just proves you can do anything if you try!

  • Danged good playin

  • Absolutely fantastic!

  • Amazing!

  • What's with the banjo player's left hand?

  • Barry is missing the fingers on his left hand and has taught himself to play excellent banjo despite his "handicap." I'm not sure why his fingers are missing. I think he explained it at the festival, saying something about playing with his stubs. In any case, he's a fantastic musician and singer.

  • I've picked with a guy whose intire left hand is missing! He is still a good banjo player, he uses a slide type device over his stub. He can play "Clinch Mountain Backstep," "Cluck Ol' Hen," and others.

  • Brian Abernathy. He alsoi used to pick with Doyle.

  • thats barry abernathy

  • yea, that's it. sorry.

    Thanks

  • That is outstanding! I just got hip to these guys not long ago and loved their sound (I'm a student of 5-string banjo myself). I never knew that he was missing fingers until I actually saw video of them play. He is a fabulous banjo player and an inspiration to musicians 'handicapped' or not.

  • @harmonirat he was born with his left hand deformed like that

  • wow thats awesome. really amazing stuff guys, that bluegrass sound is a real thing of beauty.
