It reminds you that the character is mortal like everyone else; that he's a soldier like everyone else. Although I think the following approach is more effective: When the story reaches its climax or even moves to falling action or resolution and the character dies. It just gives such a huge shock to the audience and it's great.

Last Samurai was definitely a good movie but romanticized the hell out of the samurai. By the 19th century, there were very few "true" samurai that fought with melees weapons and with bows and arrows.

Also in terms of history, the actual struggle against meiji revolution was minute, only by the odd extreme groups. Most of those "samurai" are men of value and simply found other ways to make themselves useful such as in education or trade.

The movie itself is beautifully made and amusing but the premise and its development is absurd. Bushido has nothing to do with refusing to use firearms when your enemies are using them against you. Japanese history is full of instances where samurai quickly adapted to the latest developments in military technology. So all of the scenes that are so moving are basically stupid and anachronistic. Other than that it's a great film.
