@BrittanyLiscious they are classified as endangered because they have a very small breeding range, a small number of remaining individuals, and drastic decline in population size has been observed. The decline is caused by unregulated tourism, habitat degradation, predation by introduced predators (mustelids, feral cats, dogs), gillnet entrapment, and food shortages driven by water temperature changes
That is a great production. I see that this has been filmed with the Department of Conservation (a conservation trip I suppose). I have been on a conservation trip with the DoC in too 2009 (in the Catlins), and I wonder where you went?
Thanks. This was shot at Bushy Beach, Oamaru, Otaga, South Island in 2001. We just drove to the headland and were lucky to get on a tour with a volunteer guide who knew exactly where the nests were.
The Yellow Eyed Penguins are thought to be the most ancient of all penguins. I am grateful to see the efforts that are being undertaken to protect this endangered species. Thank you for bringing this to the attention of a wider audience. I am certain that the Yellow Eyed Penguins are also grateful. It is remarkable how close you could get to these beautiful flightless birds.
