The F-18 Hornet (AKA, the lawn dart) is the "battlecruiser" of jets as far as I am concerned.... too many compromises to get too much out of one airframe. Can't do the air to air mission as well as the F-14 and can't drop bombs as well as the ancient but infinitely better A-6E TRAM Intruder which could carry 22 Mk-82 500 lb. bombs... It can't fly as far, nor can it loiter on station as long as either of the older models either.

What should be launching off the carrier today is a brand new F-14 "E", the equivalent of the AF's F-15E. Now, consider this, The USN will have two aircraft, the F-18E/F/G/H/I/J/K. . .and F-35C, they perform the same exact mission. What is the point? What should be on the decks today are F-14Es and F-35Cs.

ok f22 have 30 hour maint. per 1 hour of flight....and cost 45000$ per 1 hour of flight...
In Iraq Iranian war, iraq lost 168 planes and F14 shotdown more then 130 iraqy planes. most with aim-54a, i think 66 with this missile. they lost just 3 F14 in 8 years war....
to day iran have 60 active f14 in very good condition, with new radar, new missiles. new pilots with lots of flight hours on cats....
come on iranian pilots have lots of experience on F14, thats pilots train US in 1970s, and they have lots of asses among them with more then 5 kills.

If you are going to say that Iran has more experienced pilots in the F-14 than the NAVY, youre high. I do not doubt the Iranian pilots are half way decent, they were trained by the US. They did a great job on the Iraqi pilots with the F-14 so, I am not downing them but, to try and say that the US doesnt have aces in the F-14 where the Iranians do is a joke. The lack of combat is the only reason why Turkey drivers dont have aces

I just had a dream last night about flying in an F-14 Tomcat.
Among the usual shenanigans, at one point I bought a Tomcat after earning my pilots license. I then proceeded to fly from Santa Barbara, CA to San Diego, CA for whatever reason.
It was pretty cool, I took off okay, but the jet kept on increasing speed and then I got scared of landing for some reason. Then the fuel began to run low, but the speed kept increasing.
Then I woke up, and thank goodness too, I was terrified.

She served us long, and well. Iran can try to get parts for the f14 but the parts they wont get are the 2 in the cockpit. The two parts in the cockpit make the plane what it is was. No way will they have better pilots then the good old us navy.
@xXDEICIDE216Xx Because even the newest airframes were older then their pilots, which isn't an issue, but they get expensive to maintain and in today's military, expensive = out. It's sad. The F-14 was a pure-bread interceptor. Something the Hornet will never be. Believe it or not, multi-role aircraft can't excel at everything.
I also heard all the Tomcats were being scrapped quickly to prevent spares from finding their way to Iran. But I also hear Iran's building their own spares. A waste.
@wun1gee Even for such an old bird, she still to this day looks sexy and futuristic. Its just a plane that is timeless. Its my 2nd favorite plane only to the F-4 Phantom.
@crazy4sian F-14's not multi-role, it's still really big (Taking up a lot of room on a carrier) and it's expensive to maintain. The reason the F-14 was retired was because it just no longer had a role. Long-range bomber interception wasn't really required in today's world, and the F/A-18's a better bomb truck then the F-14 was.
If the cold war was still on and Russian bombers were still a threat to our fleet, the F-14 would still have a job. The world just didn't need her anymore. :(
@wun1gee is maintaining the f-14 more expensive then having to build a multi-million dollar stealth aircraft that would probably not go into combat??? i think it's a waste to retire this aircraft
@devastationz12349 Yes, in the long run, maintaining the entire F-14 fleet would be more expensive then maintaining a new fleet of aircraft. The F-18 and F-35 are both much more mechanically simple then the F-14, the F-18 and F-35 are both multi-role, the F-14 wasn't, and the F-18 and F-35 both have single-man crews, not two-man crews. All of the above are reasons why the Navy chose to retire the F-14 fleet and move on with the F-18E/F and the F-35C. It makes sense in today's world.
@wun1gee The NAVY was forced to take the F-18, it was not because they wanted the F-14. Dick Chenney made it so the F-14 Quickstrike, which was the update for the F-14 that was suppose to come out in 79', never happened. Instead he put the cabosh on the upgrades for the F-14 and forced the NAVY to take the hornet which is half of the plane that the Turkey is. The F-35 is on the chopping block as we speak, people are walking away from the plane because it is failure.
@wun1gee The F-14 is multi-role the pilots and engineers are the ones that brought the F-14 into the strike category so the plane wouldnt be phased out before 2000. The F-14 in Afghanistan was chosen over the F-18SH to do deep strikes in land because 1. The F-18 SH couldnt get to the targets without multiple refuelings the Turkey didnt need and 2. it was more accurate as a strike platform than the F-18 that was designed to do the job. The F-14 was lasing targets for the F-18 to help it out...

zacecipherx032x, the Super Tomcat and Bombcat both came out. I worked on them. They were delivered to NAS Oceana, flight acceptance tests were done at 8 am almost every morning. Additionally, many people may not be aware that the F-14 was lasing targets for the F/A-18 during OEF because thier PODS were crap. On the Theodore Roosevelt, and at Oceana, refered to th F/A-18 as the "Lawn Dart". The F-14's had to light up targets and carry bombs. It still kick's ass. AEC(AW/SW) USN RET.
worse nightmare, F-14 came in with hot brakes and a hydraulic leak (Vandy 47) once the plane came to a stop it errupted in flames with 5 PHOENIX missiles getting torched and the pilot shut the engines down spewing eccess fuel to feed the fire. Thank God we got the pilot and RIO out without the missiles igniting. Second worse was robbing and replacing a wing sweep actuator and the wing! Less life threatening but just as stressful...lol Miss me some F-14's

heresdave231- The only way to beat an F-14 was if it wasn't flying (and the Irainian ones weren't flying long). Tomcat shoulda been flying at least as long as the f-15 is in the air.
I understand why they scrapped the F-14 from service, but it still SUCKS! For the ones that don't understand why, its because for every hour of flight, the F-14 required 50-100 hours of maintenance. That doesn't change the fact that it was one of the all time greatest aircraft, and pretty much couldn't me beat. The only way to beat a Tomcat was if an incompetent pilot was manning the controls.
@heresdave231 i hear ya but i heard their was a modification kit developed for the next version of the tomcat, cause the earlier versions you had to rip apart a good portion of the aircraft to take the engines out. the mod was to reduce matinee times. but still the navy dont need interceptors this day in age, they just need bomb trucks with some aa, hence super hornet. but still the navy flight demo team should be flying tomcats instead of hornets.
This airplane could still beat any russian or chinese or korean jet now and next 10 years...USA is world best country and they lead whole world pretty much good, with less victims as possible...They have best of best army stuff in the world...I think that F-22 raptor and F-35 are still useless, no need too use them yet next 20 years..

In Iran-Iraq war F-14 Tomcats shot down 138 of 165 Iraq plane. 66 with Aim-54
Iran Lost 14 F14, but only 3 were shot down by iraqi plane, 1 was shot down by iran AA, 10 was destroyed by mail function (bad maintenance ) .
To day iran have 60 F14 in their fleet, updated radar, missile...
I think US retire to soon their tomcats, excellent plane, better then SH, with powerful radar...

I just had a dream last night about flying in an F-14 Tomcat.
Among the usual shenanigans, at one point I bought a Tomcat after earning my pilots license. I then proceeded to fly from Santa Barbara, CA to San Diego, CA for whatever reason.
It was pretty cool, I took off okay, but the jet kept on increasing speed and then I got scared of landing for some reason. Then the fuel began to run low, but the speed kept increasing.
Then I woke up, and thank goodness too, I was terrified.

She served us long, and well. Iran can try to get parts for the f14 but the parts they wont get are the 2 in the cockpit. The two parts in the cockpit make the plane what it is was. No way will they have better pilots then the good old us navy.

@xXDEICIDE216Xx Because even the newest airframes were older then their pilots, which isn't an issue, but they get expensive to maintain and in today's military, expensive = out. It's sad. The F-14 was a pure-bread interceptor. Something the Hornet will never be. Believe it or not, multi-role aircraft can't excel at everything.
I also heard all the Tomcats were being scrapped quickly to prevent spares from finding their way to Iran. But I also hear Iran's building their own spares. A waste.

@crazy4sian F-14's not multi-role, it's still really big (Taking up a lot of room on a carrier) and it's expensive to maintain. The reason the F-14 was retired was because it just no longer had a role. Long-range bomber interception wasn't really required in today's world, and the F/A-18's a better bomb truck then the F-14 was.
If the cold war was still on and Russian bombers were still a threat to our fleet, the F-14 would still have a job. The world just didn't need her anymore. :(

@devastationz12349 Yes, in the long run, maintaining the entire F-14 fleet would be more expensive then maintaining a new fleet of aircraft. The F-18 and F-35 are both much more mechanically simple then the F-14, the F-18 and F-35 are both multi-role, the F-14 wasn't, and the F-18 and F-35 both have single-man crews, not two-man crews. All of the above are reasons why the Navy chose to retire the F-14 fleet and move on with the F-18E/F and the F-35C. It makes sense in today's world.

@wun1gee The NAVY was forced to take the F-18, it was not because they wanted the F-14. Dick Chenney made it so the F-14 Quickstrike, which was the update for the F-14 that was suppose to come out in 79', never happened. Instead he put the cabosh on the upgrades for the F-14 and forced the NAVY to take the hornet which is half of the plane that the Turkey is. The F-35 is on the chopping block as we speak, people are walking away from the plane because it is failure.

@wun1gee The F-14 is multi-role the pilots and engineers are the ones that brought the F-14 into the strike category so the plane wouldnt be phased out before 2000. The F-14 in Afghanistan was chosen over the F-18SH to do deep strikes in land because 1. The F-18 SH couldnt get to the targets without multiple refuelings the Turkey didnt need and 2. it was more accurate as a strike platform than the F-18 that was designed to do the job. The F-14 was lasing targets for the F-18 to help it out...

zacecipherx032x, the Super Tomcat and Bombcat both came out. I worked on them. They were delivered to NAS Oceana, flight acceptance tests were done at 8 am almost every morning. Additionally, many people may not be aware that the F-14 was lasing targets for the F/A-18 during OEF because thier PODS were crap. On the Theodore Roosevelt, and at Oceana, refered to th F/A-18 as the "Lawn Dart". The F-14's had to light up targets and carry bombs. It still kick's ass. AEC(AW/SW) USN RET.

worse nightmare, F-14 came in with hot brakes and a hydraulic leak (Vandy 47) once the plane came to a stop it errupted in flames with 5 PHOENIX missiles getting torched and the pilot shut the engines down spewing eccess fuel to feed the fire. Thank God we got the pilot and RIO out without the missiles igniting. Second worse was robbing and replacing a wing sweep actuator and the wing! Less life threatening but just as stressful...lol Miss me some F-14's

heresdave231- The only way to beat an F-14 was if it wasn't flying (and the Irainian ones weren't flying long). Tomcat shoulda been flying at least as long as the f-15 is in the air.

I understand why they scrapped the F-14 from service, but it still SUCKS! For the ones that don't understand why, its because for every hour of flight, the F-14 required 50-100 hours of maintenance. That doesn't change the fact that it was one of the all time greatest aircraft, and pretty much couldn't me beat. The only way to beat a Tomcat was if an incompetent pilot was manning the controls.

@heresdave231 i hear ya but i heard their was a modification kit developed for the next version of the tomcat, cause the earlier versions you had to rip apart a good portion of the aircraft to take the engines out. the mod was to reduce matinee times. but still the navy dont need interceptors this day in age, they just need bomb trucks with some aa, hence super hornet. but still the navy flight demo team should be flying tomcats instead of hornets.
