After playing so much of the game, I'm beginning to say that the axe in CV is akin to the Splitter in Contra.
Yeah, not exactly the most perfect comparison, but you get where I'm going. Love the vids, love the NES flashbacks. :D

The "Nightmare" track was also used in Circle of the Moon, in case you weren't aware.
With proper timing, the Axe can also be effective in the Alucard fight.
