  • Since the barrel is shorter what is the effective range on this weapon?

  • @wpmpb Defining "effective range" is something of a tricky thing. The Soviets put sights graduated to 1000m on the carbine and 2000m on the rifles. To actually hit a man sized target reliably is really the issue, and for practical purposes I don't think there is a great deal of practical effective difference between the two firearms from a military perspective.

  • love it. wondering where i can get one.

  • @SimplyAsunder Suggest you check out GunBroker, Auction Arms, Shotgun News.

  • Some of the Syrian ammo is just below proof level, made for machine guns, has Arabic writing on base that really hurts without padding, actually bruises your collar bone shoulder sometimes & still fires the standard 180 grain bullet.

  • @wind4watts It would be interesting to see what sort of velocity that stuff is going.

  • @314299 Yes it would, I never had a chance to tacho it, but had more kick-recoil than the original Russian stuff that's for sure, I used 150 Grain NATO bullets for the range pussy ammo in comparison I suppose lol!

  • the same in argentina.criminals can have guns but normal people can´t.

  • I want this rifle, but gun laws in ireland suck :(

  • what did you do with the flip out bayonet?

  • @OhBoysPaintball There is no folding bayonet on an M-38 carbine. Perhaps you are thinking of the M-44 carbine.

  • I really like these guns, they are fun to shoot. Only thing that I have a niggle with is that you can't easily operate the bolt when the rifle is shouldered, it's kind of in an awkward place to do so. Other than that I love it, I also do not see how the bolt is complicated, I figured out how to disassemble it after a couple of minutes, don't see why it's hard.

  • @TaZ101SAGA I don't find them all that difficult to operate from the shoulder as long as I slap the bolt open and closed.

  • my favorite type of mosin

  • @lonesomeotter The 1938 is probably the best Mosin for hunting.

  • :) Nice Video. I love MN's.

  • @lhusby Thanks. I like mine too - I got my first Mosin over 25 years ago, lots of history for not much money.

  • that mosin is alot nice looking then my mosin.yeah my mosin was made in 1938.with the star on it to.the mosin is a fun ass gun to shoot at big stuff.real nice video.

  • @redneckman211 They are fun to shoot, that's for sure. Thanks for watching.

  • the rifle of victory.

  • Lol this must be one of the few Soviet-designed weapons legal in Canada.

  • I bought my first MN, its a M91-30, 1934 Izhevsk. Low walled, hex receiver.

Stripped her down, and got all (most, as humanly possible!) the cosmoline out... I got some Bulgarian light ball, steel core. I bought the ammo in a huge 440round tin. I'm very pleased with this purchase, and the rifle is my baby LOL.

  • I play with mosin nagant in cod2 :D

  • I have an M44 which pretty much the same rifle only with a bayonet fixed on the right of the barrel. You can collapse it back however to make it the same length. I'll probably end up getting an M38 all the same lol

  • @NormanMatchem Yep, M44 is pretty much an M38 with the folding bayonet. Have a look at my M44 video.

  • what kind of ammo do you suggest using that would give the least amount of recoil?

  • @koreanboyww2 Any of the "light ball" type loads (147 to 150 grain) will give less recoil than loads with heavy (175 to 200 grain) bullets.

  • Very nice Carbine! I'm getting one someday, definitely louder than my 91/30

  • @lovesara850 They certainly are louder than a full length rifle.

  • @314299 were is that range located?

  • @DinoPal The range this was filmed at is now closed, It was located on the east cost of Canada.

  • i shot one of these once it shot out a 4 or 5 foot fireball it was extreemly fun to shoot :)

  • @BAMFplatypus Yeah, I've heard they throw quite the fire-ball with some types of ammo.

  • Where did you get this and how much was it?

  • @n00buler89 I bought this from a small dealer in Quebec, I believe he no longer has any in stock. Here in Canada you would have to pay about $170 to $200 for an M38 in the same condition as mine.

  • great video! thanx bro

  • @xcessdj Thanks for watching!

  • @314299 are you aloud to shoot at your property or only ranges?

  • @4angele1 Handguns can only be fired on ranges, but rifles and shotguns can for the most part be shot on private property.

  • hey wait watching all your vids about guns just made me remeber that one of my friends said guns are illegal in canada, could you explain how that works, please.

  • @4angele1 Lucky for me your friend is wrong. Basically to own a gun in Canada you need a Firearms license, and most guns require registration unless they are antiques. You have to pass a background check and a safety course before you get a license.

  • Do you have or have had the chance to shoot a M91/59 carbine? They are great carbines similar to the m38 in size but actually cut down from a 91/30. Most have pristine bores including mine and is very accurate .I suggest anyone try to obtain one if they can find one , its probably my favorite overall milsurp rifle!

  • @Thaxmanwvu No, I don't have one and I've never seen one "in the flesh". I don't think they have ever been imported up here in Canada. Kinda strange since we seem to have all the other types. I'd probably buy one if they became available at a decent price.

  • Where in the country are you? The red dirt around your range reminds me of PEI.

  • I just bought a 1938 for $139.00. I have not shot it yet but I think I am going to clean it first.

  • @kbamy12345 Cleaning first is always prudent. And they usually shoot better after a good clean.

  • I could get one for $99.99 at a military surplus store!

  • @6246701 Good price - better go get one!

  • Realy smooth action

  • @RAMIAM86 Mosin Nagants can be all over the place as far as the smoothness of operation, but this one is particularly good. I suspect they buffed the bolt up a bit when they rebuilt it.

  • wow I have that exact same hat and gun! hahaha

  • @trab1925 Neither is terribly uncommon!

  • @314299 well duh, but how many people in the world own both of them?

  • @trab1925 Probably not enough to start a club....!

  • The carbines are great rifles, but they are going up in price while the original 91/30 remains cheap. I'll keep my eyes out for one at the next gun show.

  • @CrystalHunter1989 Although they made a lot of M1938's they are nowhere near as common as the M91/30, hence the higher prices.

  • I just bought yesterday...woods are well treated included bolt. The grooves of the barrel are well marked. In conclusion the rifle comes out with a lot of accessories such as your.. Shots very well...like a......MOSIN NAGANT.

  • Good. I've got the same 1938!! LOL

  • @TheMercenary1984 How accurate is yours?

  • @314299 It's very accurate. All the woods are well treated included bolt. The barrel is exellent.

I just bought it yesterday and i shot 20 rounds...Very good.

  • @314299 Woods are well treated included bolt. The grooves of the barrel are very good and well marked. I I just bought yesterday and i shot about 20 rounds. In conclusion the rifle shots very well with the precision of a Mosin Nagant.

  • @TheMercenary1984 It sounds like you got yourself a good one!

  • @314299 Sure. See ya!

  • I have an M-1938, but it is missing the bolt. Do have any idea where i can find one?

  • You could try Sarco Inc, Springfield Sporters or the Gun Parts Corporation. Hopefully one of them can help you out.

  • @ajphomie

buy one, they are really cheap online

  • Got any particular place in mind for an online place to purchased a bolt from?

  • That action looks smooth. Did you buy it like that, or did you make improvements?

  • The rifle is entirely the way I got it, it would appear that the Soviets did a rather decent job of building it.

  • I've been looking to buy a M38. I don't want something as long as the 91/30 and I have no use for a bayonet mount. How much did you pay for that one?

  • If I recall correctly it was $149. plus shipping and tax.

  • My '41 izhevsk M38 isnt counterbored that is the whole reason i bought it, i usually collect Finn mosins but have a soft spot for soviet carbines.

  • It seems that the majority of the M-1938 rifles out there are counterbored.

There sure are a lot of Soviet rifles out there compared to Finnish ones. I happen to have a new M39 on the way......

  • @314299 You'll love the M39 it is the king of Mosins, but the Finn M28 is my baby:) I read somewhere that '42-'43 ishevsk production alone outnumbers all finns put together!

  • Very well narrated and a nice presentation. Good vid. Is your M38 counterbored?

  • Yes, mine is counterbored, but the bore is otherwise in excellent condition. When I bought this the dealer had some that were not counterbored but had somewhat pitted bores so I opted to go with this counter bored rifle.

  • My M38 is counterbored as well. I have not seen one in person that was not. At any rate, thats a nice looking rifle. How does it shoot?

  • Too tell you the truth I have not shot it that much, and only with the Czech light ball surplus. It seems to shoot pretty well considering that surplus ammo. Perhaps I'll get around to trying some cast bullet reloads in it over the winter.

  • Izhevsk arsenal. For those that may not know Russian, it could be a bit tricky. But the "I" in Izhevsk has a "ee" sound, like the "ee" in feet. The "zh" sound in Izhevsk has an "s" sound, like the "s" in vision. The "e" in Izhevsk has a "ye" sound like saying yes. The rest if Izhevsk, "vsk" is just three consonants that run together, and sound exactly as they appear. The "v" runs in to the "s" and the "k" at the end. Kinda like saying "viscosity" if you stopped at "visc". The "vsk" sound :)

  • Interestingly enough I actually made an effort to find the right pronunciation and took a stab at it. And I knew I still did not have it down properly! Perhaps I'll try the pronunciation that Gungeek uses instead!

  • Hahah, for the love of God no! He's a true butcherer! But he does it just to make me mad :D If you type Izhevsk in the YouTube search, the first vid is a video about Izhevsk. He says "Izhevsk" a few times. Maybe that will help? Anyways, the short way is to just say IZZY! You ever got any Mosin questions or anything hit me up :)

  • Yeah, I kinda figured he was trying to push someones buttons with that pronunciation - and others he uses, "Nadgent" for example.

The video you mention is actually one that I watched, and I listened to the pronunciation of the word a few times.... apparently to no avail.

  • Hahaha IoI at 2:30!!!

Never seen anyone doing the backflip on youtube! Thought i was the only one who did it... just kidding.

If you do it right, when you're standing in front of a meanie you can go like: Ya feel lucky, punk? *FLIP* Well?? Do ya??? Yay!

Shame you don't have the cleaning rod.

Recoil isn't that bad, even with the heavier (180+ grains) cartridges. You just have to shoulder it juuust right. M38 is a cool looking rifle. Better than a m44 with that big hunk of metal on the side.

  • There's the muzzle down/right hand shoulder flip and then there is the muzzle up left shoulder flip. Generally frowned upon if there are other people around....

Actually I do have the cleaning rod, I took it off and put it on the bench for some reason while I was shooting.

I would certainly prefer the M38 if I had to carry a Mosin around, the folding bayonet is pretty useless as far as I'm concerned.

  • i love your videos, can u do one showing us your gun collection

  • Thanks. I don't think that I will ever do a "whole collection" type of video. I prefer to do them one at a time, as I get around to it - I hope you are patient!

  • you have one hell of a teaching voice, I watched most of your videos and I pretty much know everything about certain rifles you picked to teach about but your teaching ethic and voice made me learn again LOL good job!!

  • Hmmm... thanks - I think!

  • alot of people try to teach but but push an ignorant voice or subject but you nailed it. now how about something with the M1917?? lol

  • Regrettably I don't own an M1917 at the moment. I once owned a "sporterized" 1917 but sold it to a guy who wanted a rifle to hunt moose. I do have a P-14 which is pretty darn close to an '17 .....

  • where can u get low grain hunting ammo for them???

  • The only factory loaded soft point 150 grain is made by Igman, it is made in Bosnia-Herzegovina and it is pretty good stuff . They must have a distributor in the USA, we can get it up here in Canada.

  • I had one of these not too long ago. A beauty of a carbine although it stung to fire. I ended up selling it for about $175.

  • They can be nasty to shoot with the 180 grain ammo and that metal buttplate.

  • I know I have one and love it. I noticed you have great balance. IF I tried shooting squating like you did I would be on my butt LOL, That's why I shoot sitting or prone.

  • I think the ability to shoot from the squat position is just one of those things that depends mostly on body type. Sitting accomplishes the same thing, a lower more stable position.

  • Thank You for your input. I agree. Hope to see more of your videos. Have fun and take care.

  • Thanks for watching!

  • just wanted to say i really enjoy your videos!! i love how much you know about the different guns and you take very good care of them, great condition! thanks a lot man :D

  • Glad you enjoy the videos, thanks for watching.

  • Nice too see someone with a properly maintained Mosin action who can also work it properly.

Very nice example too, it's very hard to find any Mosin with such a clean stock.

  • A post-war arsenal rebuild like this M-38 can be in very nice shape. The stock is in such nice shape because it is an M-44 stock and it was undoubtedly a replacement one put on during the rebuild.

  • Right now, I can only find one online dealer of M38s for C&R collectors, and it's Century Arms...you can get an "excellent" condition one for about $160, so they aren't as cheap as they used to be. Right now, I'm waiting for a replacement from them because they can't seem to fix the canted sights on the M38 I just bought. Long story short, this is the 2nd time I've shipped it back to them, I sure hope they can find a replacement one now.

  • IMO $160 is still a pretty decent price for an M-38 in excellent condition. I bet in five years they will be selling for $300 or more.

  • you have some nice guns, i have a 91/30, my brother has the m38

  • How do you like your M91/30?

  • i just got it, no time to shoot it yet. i like it because the ammo is cheap and the gun was $85. should be a great gun.

  • $85 sounds like a good deal - I'm sure you will like it just fine, they are a nice rifle to shoot.

  • You have a Beautiful M-38...I have been looking for one.If you know a dealer,,,I'd love to buy one.

  • I see you are in the U.S. - if you are into vintage milsurp rifles you should get a "Curio and Relic FFL" , with one of those you can order direct from many dealers. Google "Curio and Relic FFL" for more info.

  • Nice M38, and nice vid too!

  • Thanks!

  • I've heard the M44 referred to as a "fire breathing dragon" due to its spectacular muzzle flash from its short barrel. I wonder if you have ever observed the same thing from the M38 carbine.

  • Ithe M38 certainly has the same potential for muzzle flash as the M44 since it has the same short barrel, but muzzle flash is very dependent on the ammo used. The Czech light ball I'm shooting seems to have very little muzzle flash, many military powders incorporate chemical additives designed to reduce flash. Other surplus ammunition loaded with different powder could be loaded with powder that had no flash deterrents and you get those fire balls.

  • Cool.

    Cheers. David

  • Hi Shawn,

Can you send a link where to buy a .314 mould and send me a picture of a cast bullet, does it have any grooves?

  • My favorite cast bullet is the the Lyman 314299, it works well in most .303 British and many 7.62x54R, especially those that have large dimension barrel. The Lyman design has grooves at the rear and a bore riding nose and it takes a gas check. Try "lymanproducts" dot com and search for part #2660299.

I know Lyman sells direct to customers as well as to distributors.

  • Thats a great looking rifle you have! Especially considering its age. I've been looking for one to add to my collection, but none of the ones I've looked at are nearly as nice as your example. That one is a keeper!

  • I deal with a dealer who hand picks from the importer, he gets some nice examples.

  • I have just watched your video on your Polish M44, mine is not as nice looking as yours, mine has a beat up stock but the action works very well. I also want to thank you for playing the Polish National Anthem in that video as I'm of Polish heritage and proud of it.

  • I learned a little bit of Polish history while searching for that anthem, interesting stuff.

  • I don't have an M38 in my collection, but I do have a Polish M44 carbine made in 1952 and I like it. I bought that back in September of 2004 and I only paid $76 or $77 for it. Great Rifle, would you recommend an M91/30 or an M38 for hunting?

  • I have a Polish M-44 as well, they are super well made - you got a heck of a deal on yours! As for a Mosin for hunting I'd take the M-38 for it's light weight and short size.

  • When are you gonna do a video on the K-31?

Ur a surplus shooter. I know for a fact you have one. :D

  • Actually I don't have a K-31, but I do have a box or two of 7.5 Swiss and I may just have to buy one!

  • Good video.

  • Thanks.

  • Great vid :) hows it shoot?

  • Thanks.

All I've shot in it so far is the surplus Czech ball and it shoots pretty decent. It has an excellent bore, so I'll have to see how it does with better quality jacketed bullets and cast bullets.

  • I've had good luck with the Hornady 150 gr. .312" bullets in my 1942 M38.

  • I might have a few of those kicking around, but first I'm going to try some of the .314" 160 grain bullets I just finished casting.

  • Yeah I should try my .314299's I got...

  • What gunclub is this?

  • One of the ones that I'm a member of .....

  • I am looking the gunclub like yours, couse my Hamilton one have too many restrictions

  • Hi Shawn,

    Great video as always!

How much do you pay for surplus ammo?

In Ukraine and Russia army ammunition is not allowed for sale to the citizens, only hunting cartridges are allowed, those that we can buy have no steel core in them, only lead. I pay almost 1USD per round of 7.62-54R (Barnaul). That is why I had to resort to reloading. Reloaded cartridge costs me 0.03 USD, takes a lot of time though.

  • Recently surplus 7.62x54R has gone up in price, I paid $10 per box of 20 (including shipping and tax), previously it was $6 box. We can sometimes get brass cased hunting ammo for $20 per box of 20, which is nice as the brass is easy to reload. Reloads with cast bullets are certainly cheaper here as well, and that is what I mostly shoot.

  • Nice rifles those mosin, I need to get me one of those if my parents give me concent to allow a firearm in the house.

  • Not only nice but most Mosin Nagant are reasonably priced as well.

Tell your parents that Émile and Léon Nagant, the designers of the Mosin-Nagant rifle, were Belgians. It would be patriotic of them to permit such a rifle in their house!

  • Well they think private citizens shouldn't own guns. It's "dangerous" .. I've pointed out that all those things are not founded and I've given them the real numbers from studies etc. but still ..

  • Some people are ruled with fear and not by logic, and you can't change their minds, but sometimes you can. Keep trying, and eventually you will either convince them or you'll move out before that! I was lucky, I grew up in a home where my dad and older brothers owned guns.
