This is the classic of all soul music this song transports me bak 2 a time that it shouldnt omg sweet love when i had a perfect body and all the mans wanted me why oh why did i choose the biggest dick ever in that answer lies a cryptic clue lmao
One of the best songs Lionel ever wrote. As great as some of his solo work has been, I personally prefer songs like this. A pure classic. Great message, great arrangement, great performance. Play it for your children. Music as it was meant to be used. Art to uplift the soul.
As great today (actually greater) as when I first heard it in the late 70's. Some of the greatest music of all time came out of that decade. Like someone said earlier what happened?.
@mhanlin people got lazy and ddn't want to play real instruments. Which requires artists to pour their heart, soul and feelings into their work. So they turned to machines and looping other performers tracks!!
As I see it only three (3) artists kept the lights on at Motown for the second half of the 70s: Rick, Stevie, and The Commodores. The Jacksons? They were gone. The Temps, Tops, and Supremes? All fading. Teena Marie? See Rick. Thank God for the Commodores!!!
@dburley Can you blame her for bolting? Rumor has it is she was only raking in $200 per week with masta Gordy. Everybody praises black business moguls, but many of them were tightfisted SOB's who entrusted their financial accounting to Jews and left the old soft shoe to their fellow blacks.
This song meant so much to me as a child. It really inspired me took look forward to my future and life. Thanks Lionel and the Commodores. You were and still are in my book great beyond words.
I listen to it every damn day! Great song from 1975, stuck on Army Base far away from home and my girl, on the radio over and over again... got me through some rainy tough days
it was 1975 gastonia, n.c. and this was the song that hooked me on the wonderful talent of the commodores. not only were they marvelous musicians but there lyrics and instrumental arrangements were a unique blend that to this day remains unmatched.when it comes to love this song says it all.
You said it brother. Takes us all back. Spent some time at Lake Gaston back in the day. Funny how then we thought sweet love was really tangible....now not so much. Being young and dumb was cool.
@boz987 "Being young and dumb was cool." I wish the light had switched on for me.. Why didn't someone grab me by the scruff of the neck and beat priorities into my clueless and feckless ass? That romance only comes after education and finance? Man, you really touched a nerve.
It is indeed brilliant, but hard to say their very best, simply because there were so many great songs. "High on Sunshine," "Zoom," "Sail on," "Jesus is Love" the list seems endless. They really taught me to appreciate adult music, after all those years of bubble gum soul. I went from the J-5 to the Commodores, and backwards in time to the Tempts. I guess we alot to thank Berry Gordy for...
Lionel Richie is great in his own right but the Commodores with this tune are just magnificent and majestic I always liked the song but it wasn't until later in life I realized the spirituality of this song. The words, arrangements and melodies take me to a higher plane closer to the LORD. I'd just like to thank them all and honor the memory of the one who's gone. They gave great shows and their music will always be my friend.
I grew up in WLA in the 60's this is one of those songs that helped me connect to the 'black'' community (at a time when there were race riots at the local high schools) and develop the realization that we are all ... human. To Lionel Ritchie... I bow.
os anos 70e80 marcarao toda uma geraçao de apaixonados em viver dançando juntinho, suspirando, coraçao paupitando de paixao.esta musica ajudou muitos coraçoes o meu faz parte deste mundo.DOSE AMOR.
listen to the guitar and keyboard during the break when he's speaking..the music and the vocals just touch your soul..I need to hear something like this right now my heart is so heavy and this song eases the pain
@frodolombardini AMEN! My grandmother who passed in 1982 LOVED this song, as she just LOVED Lionel Richies' voice and equated this song to a spiritual content (GOD) i.e. " ALL THEY NEED IS A HAND TO GUIDE THEM TO BRIGHTER DAY!" and would often comment how Richie sounded like a preacher when the song comes down to the bridge when Richie says I KNOW SEARCHIN' I KNOW SEARCHIN'. Miss my Lady Bug dearly as that's what I called her but GOD has her in much better place and she's watching over me.
Now here is one philosophical song of meaning, heart, and spirit by the Commodores!Once they released it,I could barely get enough of it.This is basically not a dance song, but one to listen to.I consider this gem their trademark work!"Brick House"is for fun while"Sweet Love"is for living:a statement song I will remember the Commodores for.Besides the script,I love the music as well!An ideal posting!Thank you!
I grew up in LA, in the 60's when there were race riots at the local high school (westchester high) and Lionel Ritchie more than anyone, helped me connect with the black community and transcend my racist attitudes... his music... his voice... he (Lionel) spoke to me in a greater sense....
A brilliant recording..classic Commodores. I did not think a song could have been better than This is your Life...I felt the same about this song until Just to be Close to You came out...and I felt that way about that song until ZOOM came out...afterwards I just thanked god for making me a black man and a witness during this epic time in our music history. To think Marvin, Al Green, Earth Wind & Fire, Cameo, Confunkshun, Commodores, Isleys, Anita, Sade, and Stevie in my lifetime; I'm blessed!!

First band I ever saw live at Wembley Arena, London. 1975. Supported by The Emotions. What a show. What a Horn Section. Happy memories, Wonderful songs.
My favorite as well, LR sounds great and the harmony isn't far behind. The "middle eight" where they slow it down and let Lionel talk the lyrics is what always stands out for me.
Remeber the dreams we had back in those days ya'll, hope yours came to be! thanks 4 this memory-sweet, to my crew from So-Commons Chicago-late 60's-79 love ya miss ya'll
Saw Lionel perform this song at the New Orleans Jazz Fest a couple of years ago! He was awesome! It reminded me that this was one of my favorite Commodores songs. Not many people seem to remember this one. Thanks, sounds great!!
I love this album, it's one of my favorites! Lionel Richie created such brilliant music, it's impossible not to completely fall in love with him. This is my favorite Commodores song along with Brick House and Just to be close to you.
I think Commodores are a too fast forgotten band. The sound is still fresh and many young guys now are playing something already was in the ears of their fathers. Some covers from dance or R&B singers show this, but no one remembers them for their real greatness.

I also enjoyed some early elton john which was not played on my local radio stations where and when I grew up in the late 60s early 70s. This great music molded my entire persona and I identify my self, my aura, and my awareness to life as a black man by the music I grew up with. For that I am blessed!
