  • @pippipepper outtasight, really? have you seen any of your material on youtube? you must have a lot of stories about what the scene was like back then.

  • @pippipepper what shows were u one. What's your name if you don't mind me asking?

  • rip vic tayback

  • this singing is terrible...especially the "NEW" in "there's a NEW girl in town.

  • mmmm love the end...garblegarble

  • This opening will not be or is not recommended for my personal iTunes version.

  • Who from this show is still alive?

  • @Cgatto01 all of them are alive except vic tayback who was mel

  • they kept having to replace third actress Linda Lavin did not like being up staged by nobody

  • @Airman241 WRONG!!! Polly Holliday left for "Flo". Diane Ladd was a movie actress and was unsatisfied with the grind of a TV show. Celia Weston left with the show.

  • @megamanmaniac I always thought Belle was the last waitress and came AFTER Jolene for some reason until I staretd watching this again.

  • Vic Tayback, R.I.P.

  • IS SHE JEWISH??????????????????

  • @kduideo YES!

  • oh gosh....there was suppose to be a REUNION back then but Linda declinded unless more money....typical.

  • @kduideo that sucks.. I have been dyin for a reunion and I have seen Lavin and Weston in person recently wow

  • that Tommy had a nice tight little ass

  • "You can SUCK MY CLIT!!! Mel Sharples"

  • wow I forgot how hot Jolene was!

  • I have an old TV Guide from 1976 with an interview with Linda Lavin where she stated that the friendship between Flo and Alice was important to the show. It's too bad she didn't practice what she preached in real life.

  • I agree with you Kitty.

  • LOL Levin on :13 sec will make a better looking Iron man then Robert Downey Jr

  • Linda Lavin feuded with both Polly Holliday and Diane Ladd. She was reportedly very jealous of Flo becoming the hit of the show and wasn't nice to Polly and Diane Ladd.

  • I remember seeing vic tayback on an

    episode of cannon

  • Ha just to believe i had a crush on Vera. I guess its true with what they say all your taste in in your mouth when you are a kid.

  • the show died when they can flo off show sorry linda lavin could not act neither could sing either!

  • Vic Tayback died in 1990. He was awesome.

  • Linda Lavin always looked liked she smelled......down there.

  • Mel Sharples is THE MAN !!!

  • rip Vic tayback he was on an episode on

"77 Sunset Strip" i saw TVLAND

  • what is it with females in threes? I mean you have a show with three female leads (charlies angels, alice ,) and somebody (or two somebodys ) always end up leaving rthe show...look at this show! i did think Celia Weston was the cutest waitress on Alice, though..after beth howland ( i would do Celia, back then...today no..shes too big)

  • :36 what's up with the office building in the background? I thought the diner was on a rural hwy stretch? Just pointing out something they might have overlooked on the set.

  • linda lavin at her best in barney miller.

  • *not enough

  • I love Jolene on the show! Put this series on DVD! 5 episodes is enough enough!

  • They should have had Jolene throwing the plates in slow motion at :38. It would have been super trippy.

  • WHY ARE NONE OF THESE OUT ON DVD FOR YRS? You can find every other show known to mankind except 'Alice'!

  • Lavin sounds terrible here.

  • I liked Belle but still think that Polly Holliday should of stayed on the show! Does anyone know why Polly Holliday left the show? I mean i know she went back to cowtown but i mean why did she leave the set?

  • Polly Holliday got her own spinoff show. It only lasted 29 episodes (just over a year).

  • @wtbates

polly left when alice was the # 1 rated tv show but it was a bad decision that hurt both shows. proof that you can't break up a good thing thinking good will come out of it.

  • @Alicefan94

look at my other comment as to why polly left. alice was #1 on the ratings when polly left mistakenly thinking she could pull off a show on her own. both shows paid a price by flo leaving.

  • Christ all mighty its been over 20 years since ive seen that intro..i remember now watchhing it as a young child and devolping some wierd crush and that dingy waitress i wanna say vivian was her name...Good god i wonder now how that affected my relations with all other women since LMAO...But seriously great find great clip Thnks

  • Celia Weston is in the new Seth Rogan movie, "Observe and Report". She's playing his mom.

  • I remember Diane Ladd played "Flo" originally in the Alice movie before it became a tv show,so she could easily have been recast as Flo again instead of Belle.

  • Kiss My grits.

  • the video and sound need much work

  • Listen to those opening chords, they sound like they've been lifted straight out of "Peg" by Steely Dan....

  • What happened to Belle?

why did she leave? And why didn't they bring Flo back after her show tanked?

  • I always wondered this too. Since Diane Ladd left it would have been perfect, but I don't think she wanted to work with Linda Lavin again or vice versa.

  • Maybe Polly had too much pride to want to go back

  • vic tayback was the true satr of that show.

  • Ah, this is when Linda Lavin "dyked up" with that butch hairdo and they replaced Flo with standard issue blondie.

  • Ladd is a Legend! Love Diane.

  • Sucked after Flo left.

  • I hated this show yet I watched it every week.

  • This reminds me of how great 'One Day At A Time' was.

  • iirc the show was kind of busted up by this point in the run

  • This is FREAKIN' HILLAARIOUS.....listen to the first 10 seconds...the sound is droaning hillariously like as if I WAS SMOKING WEEEEEEDDD!

  • the fact that you are the first to get past 10th grade sums everything up. black people are slaves only to black culture.....you can not get around your black genes which will always lurk underneath the facade of civility you portray. 67% of black africans do not even have indoor plumbing yet you say they were an advanced culture 6000 years ago.....lol.

  • What the hell are you talking about dude? I'm trying to enjoy this "STONER VIDEO". With it's typical "doppler-shift-effect" guitar note modulation. Makes for hillarious aural sensations while under the influence! MELLOW OUT DUDE!

  • man, Lavin really sucked...

  • Beth Howland and Allyce Beasley(I think I spelled that right)from "Moonlighting, had this cute little innocence about them..wonder whatever happened to them?

  • Did Linda Lavin have a thing for performing in male drag? It seems to be a recurring theme in these openers...

And Celia Weston was quite striking. It's a shame that she became rather haggish as an older woman.

  • I`m woundering if she is a lesbian. Her hair was cut real short.

  • Someone's missing from the opening credits in this version Philip McKeon as Tommy Hyatt...Hmmmm. I agree with 5474 as well Celia Weston did a superb job as Jolene Hunniciut, she remained on the show til it ended in 1985..I like the episode when Boss Hogg and Deputy Enus came to Mel's Diner it's on You Tube, just type in Boar's Nest West.

  • Celia actually plays a lot of down home kind of characters, but if you see her apart from an acting role, she can look quite elegant even now. (I'd say she's mid-50s now.) I met Celia when I was 19 on the Alice set ... what fun. She was so sweet to me and took the time to take pictures with me even though she was having dinner with other actor friends. I managed to meet Vic and Linda too that night.

  • I had the chance to meet Celia very recently. She was a guest at a friend's Thanksgiving dinner. Unfortunately I wasn't aware of who she was, as I didn't grow up in the US and have never watched "Alice." She was very nice and regaled us all with tales of his politician Dad. Oh, she's currently shooting a movie with Liam Neesan where she plays Christina Ricci's mom. For all this I decided to look her up here!

  • jolene was my favorite I never could stand vera and I hated belle

  • Flo was the best, but I kinda liked Joleen too.Belle sucked!

  • Agreed

  • i will agree with 5474-she could carry a tune better than any of us on this comments board combined-and she was in character with alice-i used to watch this show all the time!!!

  • Okay her singing isn't that bad guys. Also I would imagine she's singing in character!!!! Another thing linda lavin is a well accomplish broadway actress who must have some talent as you don't get there without talent. And compared to singers today ( ie Brittany spears) she's an operetic genius

  • i tend to disagree, linda lavin is a talentless slut

  • that is an awful thing to say, especially after having met her in person and after hearingher perform live(and yes she sang 'it' in the show)

  • I think her singing was great not to many shows had openings like that... It was a unique opening and ending....Classic:o}

  • Femme waitresses in their little dresses are HAWT. If I were Mel, I'd take every opportunity to smack their little booties.

  • now, 25 years later, there is no such thing as a waitress with a "little booty." they are all as big as a bus.

  • I love the VHS "Video Calibration" text at the beginning, TOTALLY takes me back! Awesome, thanx for posting!

  • Looks like they reshot the opening of the car approaching Phoenix, if you view the first couple seasons, a large semi passes, going in the other direction, here you can see a white car or van moving into the oncoming lane to pass.

  • Linda Lavin singing scares small children and pets

  • If you thought that her singing in the opening credits is bad, her singing in the closing credits from 1978-sometime in the early '80s was even worse!!!

  • oh yeah, i remember she did a sequence of bah-bah-bah instead of saying the words to the theme song. nasty

  • LOLOLOLOLOL. This is too funny. I thought that she sang season one very well along with the 1981 version in between those seasons was like she won an amateur contest and got a chance to record her own song in a studio. Kinda like karaoke. During the season two version, it was like she was chewing/overemphasizing the lyrics, "UUUURRRLY TOOOO RIIISE....URRRLY TOO BEEEED".

  • That's what I'm thinking in watching these reruns. Her singing on the openings and closings leaves a lot to be desired!

  • @somewhatlongdong Amen to that. She thinks she can sing and she thinks she's sexy - NOT!

  • cool

  • You noticed that they always tried to replace Flo with a girl from the south? But Flo was funny as hell. She got away with saying a lot for that time huh?

  • Whoever told Linda Lavin she could sing lied.

  • OMG! If I was drinking soda, I would have spit it out. This comment was simple and cracked me the h#ll up! No offense to Ms. Lavin.

  • Hi folks.

I posted on here about a month ago that ALICE, the Box Set was out on DVD... It's a total farce. DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY TO THE CROOK PEDDLING THIS THING!!! The episodes are (bad) videotapes from reruns on TNN.

Don't fall for this scam, regardless of how real it looks.

  • if you listen to the first season the words to the song is different ..

  • For some reason, I didn't really feel Flo that much. And they said she was the "hot" one? I'm sorry, but she reminds me of someone's grandmother. Jolene was much hotter, IMHO.

  • Linda Lavin had a huge ego and did not like Polly Holiday's popularity, so it's no surprise that after her spin-off failed she never returned to Mel's Diner.

  • When Shelly Long left Cheers the producers went in another direction when they replaced her prissy and uptight character with Kirtsey Ally's Rebecca. Rebecca was neurotic and unsure of herself. On ALICE they simply went with a carbon copy of Flo, or at least they tried to and it failed. Why didn't Holiday return to ALICE? She didn't want to do the spin-off but Warner Brothers wanted the show.

  • I agree I always wondered why Polly Holiday never returned after her replacement failed.

  • I named my cat Flo after Polly Holidays chartacter from this show... she just died 8 months ago :(

  • Hello,

I'm so sorry to hear about your loss. My condolences to you.

    -Matt

  • Thank you I appreciate that Matt-

    Ken

  • BIG NEWS 'ALICE' FANS! All 9 seasons (202 episodes) are now available in a box-set. It's 19 discs and retails for $239 (yeesh!). I just discovered this last night and found it online (on sale) and I ordered it immediately.

ALSO: The AOL video channel is now showing reruns of 'Flo'! Check it out!!! This was my 1st chance to see it.

  • Flo was the shit. I used to jerk it thinking about doing nasty style with her on Mel's counter.

  • What was with Linda Lavin dressing in male dragg?? Remember when she dressed up as that gomba?? Thing is she said she already has the clothes??

  • the show went downhill when Flo left...

  • anyone got clip episode with boss hogg n enos

  • Whoever told Linda Lavin she could sing or act lied.

  • Mel, Kiss my grits.......The shows of the 70's was the best...

  • Does anyone have the opening with Diane Ladd? Please post it if you do!

  • There are actually two openings with Diane Ladd, but you have to be at the right time to catch either. Six episodes from the fourth season featured Ladd, following by something like 16 episodes during the fifth season. The episode that Jolene joins the cast still had Diane Ladd in the credits, but beginning the next episode, Ladd was gone and never referred to again, even on the last episode when Mel closed the Diner and they did flashbacks.

  • I can't believe I actually remember all of this.

  • On the originally aired episodes, Philip's name was never removed. Only during daytime reruns and later, in syndication, was his name taken out in episodes he didn't appear in. This was to avoid paying royalties, I'm guessing.

  • I'd like to see one from Season 5 that has Diane Ladd in it.

  • It's very interesting that as late as season 5 (6?)they took the time to remove Philip McKeon from the credits. I'm an Alice FANATIC and I don't remember ever seeing this opening theme over these clips...

  • I do. IIRC, CBS used to show reruns of this and other sitcoms during the week in the mornings before The Price Is Right and in the afternoons after Guiding Light. Maybe it was the local affiliate, but I DO remember this theme used over these clips (including the net being thrown over Mel) in at least a couple of episodes before they changed it.

  • Interesting how diff syndicators were able to edit the credits into ? Here in L.A. if Philip McKeon wasn't in a show, they just extended the shots of the Diner roof sign, the "waitress wanted" sign, and Lavin scooting across the diner balancing the huge tray of dishes (over which they put the logo.) After season 4 I don't recall them changing the opening titles.

  • The 3rd season was the absolute best

  • I always thought the redone theme added interest to the series. I liked the fifth season version (this one) the least though. Also, the sixth through ninth were the same version.

  • Starting with season 6, the theme song became a jazzier version with Linda singing the first verse and then a trumpet plays, and then the second verse, then a trumpet plays, and at the end there is a piano break and a trumpet ending.

  • It's interesting how they found it necessary to redo the theme almost every season, when the original was the best by far.
