SINGAPORE was named "Singapura" after an ancient sanskrit name - SIMHA PURA which those two words means "Kota Singa or Lion City"..the true nounce r "Singa-po-re" that spelled "Singapura" with modern malay spelling..

Old days, the colonist miss-spelled old spelling "Singapore" and nounce it "Singa-pore" like this day :)

Sir Stamford Raffles brought Singapore from a fishing village to a trading port. Lee Kuan Yew only brought it up from a trade settlement to a city. Lee Kuan Yew is not the "Father of Singapore". He is the "MODERN Father of Singapore" while Stamford Raffles is the true "Father of Singapore". I hope no one is offended but this is my opinion anyway.

I'm a Singaporean and I'm proud to be one. While it's true that the government is indeed trying to get more immigrants to come over to our little 'dot', I beg to differ about the wealth of an average Singaporean. Most Singaporeans are financially stable and able to support themselves and their families without depending entirely on the govt and charities, like some do in Britain.

I'm applying for 20-30 jobs a week and the riots we had in August were caused by idiots. The hand wringing by The Guardianistas was something I found insulting, saying there were no opportunities. I'm an ang moh living in a grotty (but touristy) part of South-East London with a gang problem so bad, that even innocent kids going from one postcode to another could get stabbed or killed. An artist friend of mine got stabbed in the head. I've got nothing but contempt for the gangs in my area and I can't go out of the house without fear of getting mugged. At least LKY's a role model for me, has been since I was 16.

I don't think Singapore has lost its true identity at all. In fact, our identity as a country is being reinforced by the immigrants who are contributing to our economy. Have we all forgotten that Singapore started off as a island of immigrants from all over Asia?

That the beauty of a country who have both enviroments. If u live in a village/kampongs, they will get home early of course. And if they want excitement/adventure late into night then they can live in the city/cities. They have both unlike Spore.

Worry about mugging? Even Spore have gangs waiting for you with parangs...you will never know your fate.

Mr Lee, together with the PAP, have brought a small fishing village to one of the world's most prosperous economies. Even though they, like all other governments in the world, have made their fair share of mistakes(for example, I really think that the 'kiasu' attitude has to change), I truly think that they have done a more than good job governing this small island.

One of prosperous economy in the world? Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia are all above you.
