@lolvids2 not at all. same drum. In fact darbuka, derbuka, darabuka, doumbek, toumbek is all the same thing. There are alot more names depending where you ask ;)
I need some help getting some of the Darbuka basics. For example, which kind is the best of a beginner to buy and start learning with?, Which kinds are the cheapest and most playable?
As I live in Canada, does anyone know where I can get a good one?
@SupportTheBlind the cheapest crap you can get will do well ok. I've played for 5 years on a 20 CAN$ darbouka. If you ever pass by montreal, I could you show you some tips.
I think I'm getting a slap but not sure. Like you said, you have bad audio quality. How would you describe a slap? Does it resemble a tek but with more body and no sustain? Are you supposed to leave the fingers on the membrane to mute out overtones? Is it supposed to have short breath because that's how it sounds on youtube. I get the most "slap" sound when my pinky/ring finger hit slightly before middle and index and allow the hand to naturally roll towards the thumb,is that right?
hi I a am a totally beginner i really want to learn how to play the darbuka where should i go to get the lessons anything online. By the way your really good
Beautiful, clear explanations and demonstrations of the subtleties of slaps. Yes, it's the snap, not the power, which gets the sound - practicing it lightly is key, as you point out!
So true that coming down straight onto the drum is best for cleanest sound, not those weird angles which many use for flash, which just muddy up the sound. Ok, now I would love to see just one of your super free solos, no loving explanation needed! So great you are, and I will be so happy to see you just blow! :)
i have a question...whats the size of this doumbek?? 22 cm?? i know that there are three different sizes, and i dont know what would be the perfect one to me..which size you can recommand?
man, the slap is not working! Earlier I tried the (wrong) technique of slanting my hand or fingers. But every time I try it, it either ends up as a dum or a kind of a mix between the dum and the slap, I don't know why... by the way its getting better as i'm typing now :)
'Tak' is with the right and 'Ka' is with the left. In many rhythms the 'Tak' is accented more than 'Ka.' (if you are left handed.....reverse what i just said) Enjoy.
in reference of the slap: also take account too the size and shape of your hand, the idea is to make it the sound and it can be done in a variety of ways but what pacerman has is in fact the professional 'style' of positioning.
dont worry too much. Its in the finest of details that the tone i hiden. Just persist and one day it will go....SLAP! And then you will probably fall of your chair surprise. You may find some helpful tutorials on my website. Just follow the link from my channel here at YouTube. Goodluck!
no dvd, im making a website instead. It will be ready very soon, looking forward to its arrival! What state are you living in? I teach in Melbourne if your ever there, cheers Matt.
Hi Matt, thank you so much for all your videos i have a question. My Drum was a gift from my father he got it from Syria. And there isn't gaps but on some parts of the drums head the metal is Rim is higher then on other sides at the point where you stretch the skin.
Hi pandrex, its a very stock standard drum. Believe it or not but i bought it from a bakery in Melbourne! It cost around $160 and is standard size. I think around 9" across the head and the body is about 17" i think. It uneven and cheap but has many sweet spots once you get used to it. cheers...
I am going to buy the Darbuka rhythm techniques for $29.95 soon..I also like your music on myspace..This CD can i see you play or this is an audio?? Have you ever thought doing a DVD? OK i'll stop here...thanks :)
mrshellas, are you for a free palestina?if yes why are you against KKTC
(Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus)?you forgive everybody (arabs and greeks) who insult Turks.you are not a Turk.INSALLAH one day a Turk will take that darbuka and will stick it in your dirty mouth which calls us occupiers.
The Turkish Army will stay in Cyprus forever.there won´t be a second genocide on cyp.Turks.
if u want peace bring together people from palestina and israel you hypocrite.
Ohhhh this is quite interesting I need to work on my speed with my fingers...My professional egyptian style Darbuka from Morocco only costs $60.00..Apparently that is cheap compare to yours Matt...I may get another one for $160.00 at Larkin in the morning ( world music store) in California..I do have gaps around my rims between the plastic drum head and the rim...CHEAP!!!!! no wonder it doesnt sound so perfect LOL!!.. Matt,..Do you have a CD for the Music that is posted on your myspace website?
Thank you Matt for another great video . I particularly learned a lot from this episode : my "Dum" and my "Slap" are usually played at a quite big distance one from the other . Cheers!

@Gretsche87
Is it a pop/crack sound, like it's barking at you or is it more of a dead but brighter doum sound?
I find that I can get a nice, bright crack sound if I spread my fingers slightly but not sure if that's what I'm supposed to go for.

I like your videos :D I'd like to see more tutorials from you cuz I'll probably get one soon... :)

I was taught a "grab" by a turkish teacher which is between a slap and mute. I can produce a slap but only with force. I'm working on it!

maybe you're removing your slap-hand too fast...if you keep it on the skin, it can't make a tone like a doum anymore
