That was amazing! At times it looked like he was just randomly hitting toms and snares, but if you listen closely there is a definite pattern and beat to it :)

his solo all-in-all reflects the themes and energy of the song, Rollercoaster. he's clean, has a particular rock quality to his playing and has a unique pop punk sensibility. his flow is exciting to see and hear. he has his own sound, which is hard to do in any instrument. i'd say he's great.
he's playin some really good stuff. like the fact that i can hear his rolls in the first passage of his solo, given the sound quality of the video, is excellent. the fours(hands) and twos(feet) combinations in the proceeding section are impressively fast, especially the speed and quality of his one foot doubles. the groove at 0:45 feels good (throwing in more than a few tasty 6-stroke rolls) all the way until the end when he transitions back into the song playing the beat of the bridge.
this argument is undying. the fact of the matter is, he's really not that good. there's hundreds of mainstream drummers better than him. but in the same sense, he's really not bad. he's better than lars ulrich which is all that matters. travis barker is seen as good because he's very flashy, not technical, doesn't do tricks, but he is appealing to watch, hence why he is famous. he's a good producer, and got where he is by working for it. i personally hate him. but i can't discredit him for it.

Who says you can't compare drummers of different styles? It's kind of easy. Could George Kollias play this? Of course. Could Travis Barker play Cast Down the Heretic? I think not. So who's the better drummer? Also, just because he plays punk style doesn't mean that he should stick to simpler things. Look at john bonham, does a blues-rock background call for twenty minute long solos with your palms???

The average person might know 2 or 3 drum rudiments, so why would he do a solo showing off his chops? he's playing for a bunch of teenagers...all they wanna hear is loud noises and fast rolls. THAT is why travis barker plays the way he does. I'm sure if he was stuck in some other genre of music (like jazz), he would play with more complexity and a better use of dynamics. Not a competition to see who can cram the most paradiddles and rolls into a 3:00 song. Just like with a painting...if you paint every color, the result would be a brown smudge. The songs that are most enjoyable are often the simplest. You are making music a competition, which is not what it's meant to be. There is no "best".

He did KNOW what not to play in certain sense which shows restraint which meant he did understand dynamics. He was articulate in his own right. The fact is that Bonham was also very well rounded as a drummer. and his solos weren't rudimentary like barker's. Look at John Blackwell amazing technique with solid "pocket". You must be talking about music appropriateness which i don't exactly agree with.

his solo all-in-all reflects the themes and energy of the song, Rollercoaster. he's clean, has a particular rock quality to his playing and has a unique pop punk sensibility. his flow is exciting to see and hear. he has his own sound, which is hard to do in any instrument. i'd say he's great.

he's playin some really good stuff. like the fact that i can hear his rolls in the first passage of his solo, given the sound quality of the video, is excellent. the fours(hands) and twos(feet) combinations in the proceeding section are impressively fast, especially the speed and quality of his one foot doubles. the groove at 0:45 feels good (throwing in more than a few tasty 6-stroke rolls) all the way until the end when he transitions back into the song playing the beat of the bridge.

this argument is undying. the fact of the matter is, he's really not that good. there's hundreds of mainstream drummers better than him. but in the same sense, he's really not bad. he's better than lars ulrich which is all that matters. travis barker is seen as good because he's very flashy, not technical, doesn't do tricks, but he is appealing to watch, hence why he is famous. he's a good producer, and got where he is by working for it. i personally hate him. but i can't discredit him for it.
