Wanted to thank you for your videos, Nut'n. I'm very interested in backpacking/hiking (and also have begun shooting again after a 20-year hiatus) and your videos are literally good teaching sessions for me. I find myself taking notes for later advice and study, just like I did during college/grad school! Best wishes to you and your awesome family!
I noticed UncleSamsRetailOutlet had surplus Catoma Stealth 1 combat tents on a 20% off sale today for under $60. A little heavy for light weight backpacking, but a great little stealth/bug-out tent. Can't beat that price if you're looking for something rugged and cheap! Some of us TNP'ers just love our camouflage! Keep up the fantastic work!
I must say the "We're in the mountains, girlfriend" opening with Allie makes me kind of sad given Allie's recent problems that have been keeping her away from those absolutely beautiful mountains. I'm sure you don't need reminding, just letting you know I'm hoping she gets better and can head back out on another adventure soon. Also, thanks for the reviews, I've done some group backpacking with issued 3-4 person tents before, but am looking to pick up something smaller and lighter for myself.
Hey Nutinfancy, thanx for all the awesome videos you've done over the years. If you have the time, you should review some Hilleburg tents. They look like great products, and I'd like to get your opinion on them.
Nutn. I just want to quickly share with you, what you have done for me.
Over this past year I have been dealing with intense depression, when I get down, I GET DOWN. Whenever I am feeling this way, there is almost nothing that can make me feel content and/or happy about life. Except- for watching your videos. Thankyou so much for doing what you do, and keep doing it. :) You're a great man.
thanks for this review, i just bought a kelty zenith 2 person for a decent price. Looking forward to testing it out. Your other vidz are very helpful. Keeping prepping! hua
Not to dig for to much information on you, but are you a Marine or a former Marine. You certainly seem as if you are. If you are indeed a Marine then Semper Fi brother.
@flyrodderdh Semper Fi, Marine, but Nutn retired from the AF this past December. He was a pilot for them for over 20 years. We have great respect for all branches of service. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
@BallerSkier He's been married for over 20 years and has two sons. You, however, sound like you're anexpert on what could get you a "man friend". Good luck with all that. -- Veri
Why so many rude comments? I like the vids. I like to know the info is coming from a true genuine person with an experienced background in the subject. I find nutn's personal experiences relatable and are on the same page with many of his thoughts on pou and comfort. If you want straight forward specs go to the manafacturers website and download a user guide and have fun reading.
Love your videos but kinda disagree on the ultra light tent opinion. Do agree with you on the bivy's. Got one and used it one one trip and it sits in a corner now. But I do own a light weight single person backpacking tent I love. Wondered your opinion of the spitfire by eureka.
enjoyed your video. I put a video response and hoped you could give me some pointers with you tent experience. No use re-inventing the wheel. I like coming up with new ideas and putting them in my tents I build, but don't want to start on something that someone else has already tried and failed. Thanks
Hey Nutn, just saw on the Marmot homepage that the Marmot Limelight 3 comes in a new color that might interest you since you said it is a great design. For some purposes you said you want to blend in. Check it out! I love my limelight, I wish they would sell the new fly as a separate product so you can switch from signal colour to the well blending in olive. Love the fastex attachment, it would be so quick and easy.
I think Nutnfancy is one of the best outdoor gear reviewers on YouTube today. However, Nutnfancy is ex-airforce and all of you in the combat services know exactly what I mean. Nutfancy provides exceptional insight for the average outdoor enthusiasts but lacks a real depth in terms of real outdoor/climbing/mountaineering gear. I think you really have to be in a situation where your GEAR is essential to survival (i.e. hanging off half-dome or surviving an epic on Ranier)...it's all relative.
Nutnfancy Thanks for your videos. Good job! I have recently decided to try and backpack with my 2 Samoyieds . My health is not the best so the lighter i can go will help. It is amazing how light some ppl are going . I dont have much to spend but did get a Eureka 15 deg bag it is the short one only 2.8 lbs I hope it will be a good one.a
well i was at Cabelas yesterday and they had the Hennessy hammock there. It dose look nice and light . It was around 1985 when i last seen him use the one i was talking about I was in the Marines with him he got out of the Army and later went to the Marines as our head ofthe scout sipers. i just was suprised how well it worked for him but heavy i am shure. I think he did use a pad in there as well.
Tents .My best tent so far for the money is one i got 4 years ago at walmart. Ozark Trail the size i think it is a 9x9 I seam sealed this tent 2 times when i got it . I think it was a round 50 bucks . My Samoyed dog and me went camping with it 2 days ago 12/30/10 60 deg to 19 with a thunder storm that produced tornados in the state. The rain turned to freezing rain. the only bad thing was getting the zipper un stuck from ice.Not one drop of rain in side. good as a tent 6 times its price.
Hey Nutnfancy, could you review the Eureka! Alpenlite XT, it seems like a very good tent for it's price, I think a lot of people would benefit a review of a 4 season tent that only costs 250$ or so.
I bought a Sierra design tent when I was somewhere bout 18. Used it fairly regular all over British Columbia and still have it to this day. I'm 40 now! I'd say that is good.
great nutnfancy, but you get a little too excited in killing bugs lol just like me! lol i keep a kill score when im in my supermarket killing fruit flys and other various bugs
Great vids, saw them all!! but the ground is murder on my back, can u comment on hammocks. because i like the idea of camping hammocks and im thinking of purchasing the Hennessy camping hammock.
@pinatamarket I have been looking into hammocks myself. From what I understand (being that I have never used one) they are quite a bit colder than a tent. Since there is nothing but open air beneath you, heat can be convected away from you rapidly. Even when you use a sleeping bag, the insulation will compress under the weight of your body which will render it useless. I wonder about still using a sleeping pad. I have also read about people using reflective windshield screens for insulation
@cockercane My friend A Recon Ranger Vet with 4 tours in Vetnam would only use his Nam era hammock it was canvis with a top and bug screen sides . The rest of us sleep in the big CP tents he would be in that thing in the worst of storms never getting wet. I have looked for one like it but never found one yet. He said that was all he ever used.
@kcdan1 I'm not familiar with Vietnam era hammocks. If it were made from canvas, seems like that would make it heavy for those who wish to count ounces. But I imagine that the hammock you describe would be the way to go.
Try looking into Hennessy hammocks and see what you think.
How can you safely heat a tent ? My family lived in a large millitary tent one summer( mid1970s) after our home burned down.It was set up behind my uncles and aunts house.I remember being afraid because fall was coming and we could'nt heat a tent safely. We got a house ,all ended well.Just curious because I never stayed in a tent in cold weather.
I have watched a quarter of this video and you haven't gotten to the point, yet. I don't care about your qualifications, your experience or why you're where you are. Review the items, give your opions, then end it. I won't be watching any of your other videos. You seem experienced and a qualified, nice guy, but I don't need to hear about that. Just say what you have to say and call it good.
ok I still think to say your only serious about if you do youtube video is arrogant dude really! so before the internet nobody was serious about anything I suppose....lmao
wat type of tent would u reccomend for like a survival kit? ive been debating between a tent and a hammock to put in my survival kit. i want it to be small enough to fit INSIDE a small (2000 cubic inch) pack. would i want a small floorless tent or just a hammock?
THE COPS CAN STEAL YOUR BACKPACKS AND CAMPING GEAR FOR CAMPING IN OUR OWN PARKS NOW! THE USA IS FASCIST, TERRORISTS OWN THE GOVERNMENT. IT'S NOT A CONSPIRACY, IF YOU LIVE IN THE OPEN, THEY WILL FIND YOU AND PERSECUTE YOU, YOU MUST PAY RENT, YOU MUST PAY TAXES YOU MUST SUPPORT THEIR EVIL SYSTEM, THERE IS NO ESCAPE, FREEDOM IS DEAD.
Timothy Treadwell without the bears. awesome stuff man! looking into a new tent and these vids are a big help. (esp reminding me NOT to forget the bug juice.) thanks & keep on keepin' on!
no offence man i like ur u tube page but its like iam nearly 7 mins in now and u havnt evan started then i looked and its 1 n a half hrs to reveiw some tents :S :S
Another great vid there bud, got me a few different tents for different aps,but i like my Mil TCOP by Eureka, very low key woodland camo...You're a great inspiration in many ways in different fields...Thanx & well done...Oh never mind them critics there, i don't think they'll make it when it hits the fan...You're a great teacher & have alot of great advice...
Camouflage tents are nice looking. If you are in wilderness and don't wanna look like fire truck, you can observe wildlife more easily. And it's more safe. Besides, most wild animals have natural camouflage, only domesticated animals are easy to spot. And we all know what will happen to cows and sheep. So why not blend in. :D
i think its important to use a bright colored tent when camping in a new location makes it much easier to find your campsite during the day as well as at night.
Nutn I have used an LL Bean Light Stuff #2 for about 10 years which has finally worn out and I replaced it with a North Face Bullfrog 23. This tent design seems to be the best compromise between space, simplicity, strength, and weight to me. I can set it up in under 5 minute by myself in the dark if needed, has a good size vestibule, and tips the scales at 4.5lbs. I like the fact that the LL Bean tent solely used clips but the sleeves on the Bullfrog are not too bad.
I noticed that the floor of the particular tent you're in on this vid doesn't have the tarp floor. Does that brand make that difference or is it that particular type...i.e. backpacking tent or car-camping tent? I ask because mine has that tarp floor. Are there drawbacks for that type vs mine?
Great stuff I work as a river guide kinda canoe resort job all summer this is my third year, I spend months on end in a tent and all the stuff this gut says is right on the money :) Cant wait to get a new one this season I had a 3 man searia firestorm last year worked really well but I am looking for a new one for this season in the three man 3 season under 300 dollars any one got advice for this ~ Great video 10 stars~
Wow I have to give it to you, I never watched a 32 minute how-to, review or anything similar, not even a third of that, and stayed interested. This time I did. 32 minutes. So many details, and personally the takehome message for me: don't buy your tent too small. I have to add, I kindof think many people want to go ultralight, simply because they are worried of not being able to carry the weight, maybe due to an injury, maybe something else. Anyways, thx for this excellent explanation.
Nutnfancy takes his time to make these videos so I figure that he can edit them however the hell he wants to. Just enjoy them or read the side bar explanation thats what they're there for.
I wish you would experiment with the issue of short-n-sweet versus lengthy intros etc. Try posting an "A" and a "B" version of a couple of your next efforts, one without the fluff. See by the comments or ratings, which is preferred.
He already spend a ridiculous amount of time editing ONE video... do you really think he has enough time to make two of each video? Thats nuts. Just wait for it to load then fast forward
@atnipjoe watch?v=Jnoo4BPe2eo Minus 26 degrees (not sure if it is Celsius or Fahrenheit) night-time temperature and these guys are using hammock tents. They use: an undercover, multi-mat (closed cell foam), down sleeping bag, open cell foam, space blanket then hammock. I think if properly prepared it would be fine for winter camping.
I think you provide a useful service and these videos are helpful; however, as others have said, I wish you would cut to the chase sometimes. Found myself dragging the slider bar to jump through your long expositions.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I really enjoyed the info.. Thank you very much... BUT YOU TALK WAY TOO MUCH.. I could even hear your stupid dog unzip a tent crawl in and start snoring.. Next time make the video 1/3 the length and shut the F$@k up... Thanks again, I've now made my tent choice!
How 'bout this, instead of creator of this video shortening his videos, how about you hitting the stop button and moving on. If you don't like his videos, don't watch them.
OR
How about you make these type of videos, this way you can make it whatever length you want it!
Thank you for everything. You're so knowledgeable and such a great person. Your videos are not only informative, but also inspirational. I wish there were more people like you out in the world.
If you don't mind me suggesting, I would look into tarp and sleeping bag type thing. If WROL. If you are in a city/city ish area. There are shelters eveywhere, houses buildings etc. and if SHTF or WROL there are still beds in every house, they don't leave! Tents generally need soft ground to peg tents down. And a fairly open area. Unless that is all around wherever you live. No need for it WROL. But still great to have if you need to get out of dodge. So any tent will do. Thanks, cheers!
So wise and knowledgeable. I'd never think of the condensation/down sleeping bag issue. Glad I found this guy's reviews it's helping me save a ton by not buy junk gear.
Hey dude, thanks a lot for the backpacking tent videos! i watched all of them and it was very useful, a lot of things i forgot to account for. I bought a Marmot EarlyLight 2, its small and lightweight, could be bigger but i really like it and you cant beat the price. thanks for the videos i try to keep up with all of them!
Yeah, I don't get the color choices manufaturers use at all. There are much more subtle colors that could be used. I prefer the more low impact colors as well.
I got no ordinary tv anymore after I discorved all the cool tv on youtube - well I do have what i got for free. Mr. nutnfancy realy got some media talent, and I like to see informative TV that flows. I done some camping ,but I never been hiking with the real equipment - I was cold in yosemite in the frost(light). What would be informative if there was some about camping and hiking with children-i`ts fun,i`ts cheap and they will be a little more prepared if times changes.
i use a eureka zeus classic 2 man, great strength, roomy, light, and compact!!! perfect pack tent!! could have a little more ventilation.. best tent i own besides the a-frame timberline 4-man
nutn............. i wish i would have had a dad like you. i had a shite step dad. so, i can really appreciate a dude like you. doddle is a really lucky kid...
Peace is coming! new vids and new side bar. Let me know about your thoughts and we will see if we can find a solutions to the problems at hand. Poverty can be ended, Life is precious. Not profitable! 1luv.

Room for gear? that's what vestibules are for, preferably 2 doors and 2 vestibules (and under 5 lbs)
knarfster 1 year ago
I would put most of these tents in the Car camping category, not Backpacking.

@HELPTHEHOMELESS32 That's because the Feds own all the parks in this country. It's nothing but a huge land grab.

BC4Lyphe 1 year ago
I noticed that the floor of the particular tent you're in on this vid doesn't have the tarp floor. Does that brand make that difference or is it that particular type...i.e. backpacking tent or car-camping tent? I ask because mine has that tarp floor. Are there drawbacks for that type vs mine?

Have you ever used one of the hammock "tents?" If so, what do you think about them, oh, and how would Allie handle it?
Aryaba 1 year ago
@Aryaba hammock tent is ok in the summer but in winter the cold air would go up under neath you and freeze you to death even on a cool night
atnipjoe 1 year ago
@atnipjoe watch?v=Jnoo4BPe2eo Minus 26 degrees (not sure if it is Celsius or Fahrenheit) night-time temperature and these guys are using hammock tents. They use: an undercover, multi-mat (closed cell foam), down sleeping bag, open cell foam, space blanket then hammock. I think if properly prepared it would be fine for winter camping.

I think you provide a useful service and these videos are helpful; however, as others have said, I wish you would cut to the chase sometimes. Found myself dragging the slider bar to jump through your long expositions.

@chefkrisb;
How 'bout this, instead of creator of this video shortening his videos, how about you hitting the stop button and moving on. If you don't like his videos, don't watch them.
OR
How about you make these type of videos, this way you can make it whatever length you want it!
Idiot.

what tent would you use if it was a WROL and you need to move and you had to walk on foot?
817riverparkmusic 2 years ago
If you don't mind me suggesting, I would look into tarp and sleeping bag type thing. If WROL. If you are in a city/city ish area. There are shelters eveywhere, houses buildings etc. and if SHTF or WROL there are still beds in every house, they don't leave! Tents generally need soft ground to peg tents down. And a fairly open area. Unless that is all around wherever you live. No need for it WROL. But still great to have if you need to get out of dodge. So any tent will do. Thanks, cheers!
