That's Vic Elford in the Austrian 917 (white with red fender stripes) factory prototype turbo 1100hp whomping up on the Gulf/Wyer Normally aspirated 917s. After he passes them he gets on it just coming out of the right hander.

fabulous times...those was pure racing cars ! ford gt40 , 908 , 917, mirage, chaparral , lola , ferrari 512m , ... had then 20 years old, and till now, any race was so much hot , and hard , and wild. Hope your time machine arrives before i died.

its the first movie ever made that really draws out the best side of racing, which is actually "being" there throught the whole thing, and not just turn a 20 lap race into a 1 lap 5 minute sketch

@NeeKroVal : "Le Mans", a 1971 film with Steve McQueen, Probably the best film ever made about racing. Not much of a scenario, though, which is probably why the film is so good. Dialogue is scarce, but meaningfull. Example: "When you’re racing, it... it’s life. Anything that happens before or after... is just waiting."

That 917 longtail is just awesome... Freaking BEAST.... that car just sailed away! Love this era of racing, too bad the regulations changed Le Mans, and now with the GT1 class gone from Le Mans I feel that Classics like this are slowly slipping away.

I love the sound/look of the Langheck (what we called "boat-tail") used by Martini & the Austrians. I can't get that whining blue roar outta my mind! Not like any of us would want to! Vic Elford was A great driver to put in that car! I saw the martini langheck & the Austrian one at the 3rd Zackspeed reunion site. That was very cool.

What is a 908??? The Longtail 908's that won Daytona were a few years prior to this, In this Video the number 25 is Vic Elford and Kurt Ahrens 4.9litre longtail 917, the JW Gulf 917's are all short tail 917's 2 with 4.9litres and 1 with 4.5 as is the other Austrian car the red 917 (1970 real winner) and there is Gerard Larousse in the 'hippy' Martini longtail but you don't see it much...

Unless you mean Steve's Solar 908 was the camera car???
