In a good steel and concrete building, it would come closer to being measured in feet than miles. In a valley, the range would be measured in miles, but not many. In a balloon at a few thousand feet it might be measured in terms of states.
@rdeveloper It's the Byonics Pocket Tracker. It's no longer available, but there are a few problems with this design. It doesn't have receive sense, which means the transmission can clobber other people on frequency trying to send their positions.
