hey im not a real teck person but i did everything on the video, but when i try to turn on my pc it sends me to a settings right away i cant do anything at all, please help
Interesting to hear about the 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor. Looks so cool. Does anyone know what it's called & if it's available in the UK? Also while watching that video, I was wonderiong wtf that was sitting on top of the cpu on the motherboard. The cm v10 by any chance? Not a nice design by far.
what if i'm upgrading to a modern pc but want to take my pata harddrive from it and install as my primary hdd (and then the pc would have a sata harddrive as well as a pata)
No, if you do that Windows cant load. But you could just install your old HDD into the new pc and then just copy all your junk to the new hdd (and still use both HDDs)
@Peetah16 i think it serves more as a heatsink than an adapter. Because if it was a crappy plastic adapter it would overheat or people would remove the adapter, place it inside a ps3 and when they turn it on they can watch their ps3 melt from inside xD
@GunSotsOverMe Trust me, Albert is the best person on the station for tech answers. Watch other videos on this network, that's how I learned how to build a computer from scratch.
5 stars! Good vid Albert for the people who are just venturing into the DIY computer thing. I made the mistake a few years ago and bought a IDE for my optical drive, it was my first build. I wish I would have seen this first.
well he did talk about IDE, SATA, SSD, SSD adapter, various plugin types, performance, capacity, RAID 0 RAID 1advantages/down falls, imaging, adding drives etc.
Teaching people all of this adds more competition for jobs in the computer industry. It makes no sense to me why they teach these things to the public.
With some ingenuity I managed to get it to work on the bran new drives, but I'm unsure of whether this presents any problems if I try to configure a RAID 5 array.
Thanks for any information and advice you can give me,
my other existing HDD in RAD 1. But I really don't want to do that since they generate a fair amount of heat/vibration. These are all 7200 drives btw.
My main concern is that I do not have any OS discs if I need to reformat my existing "C" drive. I'm a student and managed to get an electronic copy of Win7 from an online company. The problem with it is, in order to install it, you need to have another copy of windows on the harddrive.
My mobo has an onboard RAID controller that supports RAID 0, 1, 1+0, and 5. Is the best thing for me to do to go buy three more harddrives and just set them up as RAID 5? Or is there a way of setting up the two that I already have, buy a third, and have the computer recognize it as a RAID 5 array without reformatting anything?
I think what I need to do is buy three more HDDs, use two of them in combination with my C drive and set that as RAID 5 and then use the third in tandem with
My name's Dan and I'm currently deciding what to do with my computer. As it is, I have two 640gb hard drives, JBOD setup. In short, I want to set up a RAID 5 configuration. My goal is to end up with a very good machine, and this is a project I want to work on for quite a while. With that said, I'm unsure of what my options are in this regard; I already have almost 50% space taken up on both of the existing drives and neither drive is backed up.
I am worried about redundancy though. There's a huge amount of media files and important documents on the secondary drive. That's why I'd rather stick with RAID 5 unless you know of a reason why that's unwise :S
I want to know more about that thing you put the SSD Drives into because I want to build my first desktop PC this year & I want to use SSD Drives at lease 2 or 3 1TB SSD Drives.
at startup, hit del to enter setup, than -> to book disck or boot options, usually 2nd option down, enter, select from list and f10 to save and exit, once your done if you want to switch and repeat and change. same step when booting of dvd to install a OS.
Yes, it is in the BIOS. Basically you set the order of your hard drives to be loaded and the first one in the list is where the MBR (Master Boot Record) is loaded from. The operating system can be on any of the hard drives it doesn't matter, but the drive with the MBR on it must be first, and the drive with the OS on it must be in the same location as when it was installed as well.
but raid 0 has no redundancy and that's my main issue. i absolutely do not want to go with raid 1 if i can avoid it, because raid 5 seems so much better for the extra money.
I guess I'm just not sure if I need to set this up with completely new drives or whether I can use the ones I have now.
i guess my post was too long for me to expect people to read the whole thing.
i already have 2 hdds. i don't want to reformat anything. i want redundancy as well as performance, so raid 5 seems best. i just dont know if i need to get all new drives or if i can just buy one more and have the controller parity the info from the others on the new one? that would be ideal as it is the cheapest solution.

Some old SATA drives may come with the SATA power & legacy power (molex) connection. But the internet sells molex to SATA power for like £1.50
The laptop form factor drives tend to be more expensive for equivalent storage space.
You also don't need to fiddle with any jumper settings with SATA which might confuse novice installers.
I wish they'd change the rules so that manufacturers state the usable space i.e 160GB drive = 149GB usable
Overall really useful install vid!
