  • The Samoan war dance is called the SIVA TAU (siva=dance, tau=war). The HAKA is the war dance performed by the Maori.

  • HAKA=is maori for war dance....Samoa....Hawaii....Tonga...Nuie..Fiji...plus other polynesian groups have their own war dances similar to the haka but not called haka...or better still look up on the net and check it out yourself...too you all become familiar where the name HAKA originates from...

  • a wise old man told me kapa o pango was to to describe ourselves as like an erupting volcano, yeah all goods that there learning the haka but please just out of respect know where its from and how to do it properly, and out ov respect for our other maoris out there kicking up a shitty, understand these people only know what thev been taught hav a go at the thick fuck who taught them not the players themselves

  • sole do a sivi tau why do da haka get an interprator 2 explain 2 u wat the meanings and do it properly aite faafetae lava manuia faa man!! lol im a Maori haha!! kakite ano mean maori mean

  • maori 2006 u is one fag

    u tink u maori

where u live i live new zealand

and we should be proud that all polynesians like do the haka to spread our culture dumb fuck

  • @808statehawaiian This is old but.

Maori language has no L's or S's in them. Samoan, Tongan and Hawaiian does.

Haka is a Maori term, not a Polynesian term. You cant say that Japanese are the same as Indians.

Or that the French are the same as the Irish.

A bit racist, but the old Maori used to call other Polynesians, Half Breeds because the were related, just not as smart as Maori were.

Old Maori's considered themselves separate from Islanders.

  • @hazza3 - uh... actually some tribal dialects, like my own, did have certain phonetics that sounded the 'L' regularly. Also the 'S' was used a lot in song form & in South Islands Rabuvai Tribes. & there was an elite class of tohunga who conversed with other tohunga in a tongue not locally known, even to the leading chief, of which there was a whole range of sounds that would, to today's maori ear, sound like jibberish.

  • dumb ass white boy!!! they are maori words not samoan stupid bitch niggers shouldnt even be doin this they look like shit!!! do a slap dance or sumthin

  • Didn't you notice though, there pretty much claiming it as Samoan. The reporter called it a polynesian dance and there quarter back said he'd learnt all the Samoan words.

  • Kia ora, I'm maori and well I gotta say I'm stoked to see that people are embracing our culture. What's even more impressive is it's on American TV.

People are curious as to where this dance originates, if they want to know more they know where to look. It's always good to raise Maori awareness.

    YOU ROCK BOYS!

  • Comment removed

  • PLEASE... Come to New Zealand and learn how to do the Haka properly, copying the All Blacks Kapa O Pango haka which was written for THEM and passing it off as your own just isn't cool boys... Come and get taught properly and show some respect please.

  • If you gonna do it... DO IT PROPERLY!!!

  • chur ow!!! im a maori, and i reckon dez falas are mean!!haha

    keep it up!

  • yea some you do sound like sooky bubas some in hawaii could be more closey related to te rauparaha whos haka this is than some maori hawaiian rarotongan tahitian geneologies name the same people at the same time. i do know what the cuzzies are sayn if any1 has rights to do this haka it should be ngati toa decistion te rauparahas iwi

    (tribe) only my thoughts

  • HEY gr8 to see others embracing our culture. I aint mad at that at all. I am curious though does hawai not have a war dance? heard yous were the ones that ate captain cook lmao.

  • wtf that guy colt brennan says its a samoan thing?

  • University of Hawaii. should not be doing the Maori style Haka, they should be doing a Hawaiian Hula befitting our culture.

Emulation is the sincerest form of flattery, but so many Maori here view it as thief of your culture. Maybe but by this logic I could say don't surf and if you do your stealing Hawaiian culture. Remember we are all part of a very small family, we shouldn't fight amongst ourselves.

  • i agree

maori is a new zeland warrior.....

  • damn. all these maori people crying cuz uh doing the haka. i didnt know you guys were whining lil bitches, i taught you guys was tough like hawaii, i guess i was wrong.

  • wat a load of crap, even my moari friends think this shit looks fuckin stupid, they need to evolve.its pathetic.

  • dude..... the haka does not suck.... you do. the reason they do the haka is because they are Polynesian, and its their culture.! and its NOT better when blacks do it! ((no offense to black people.....i love black people)) just not when they try to do the Haka........ :)) but tmm409..... your kinda a jerkk! :)

  • you're a fanny, they have stolen this from the all blacks this is not an arguement that is the fact it has been blindly copied. They didn't even have the fuckin sense to chaince the words to hawaiian or change the line "ALL BLACKS SILVER FERN" so don't stand there and talk to us about the fuckin haka because we have been doing it since the early 1900'2 you wee fanny

  • i dont even think theres a maori in their team.

  • DUDE shut your frickn mouth!!!!!!!!!!!! its NOT only the Mauris who can do the Haka...... its a Polynesian war dance and guess whos polynesian?!!!!! HAWAII. SAMOA. TONGA. FIJI. TAHITI. NEW ZEALAND! maybe the mauris did make up the Haka...... but it dosent mean that the rest of Polynesia dosent have a different version........!!!!! jerkk!

  • haha all blacks is a rugby team. dont worry im not racist!

  • and youre not polynesian like me so dont try to talk. Hawaii's Ha'a is the best!!!!

  • actually its nz maori war dance and yes every south pacific have different haka iv seen them all

  • Shhh bolo... Then do YOUR version and leave the Maori version to the Maoris...

  • the word haka refers specifically to the maori war dance

  • dae got thea own culture why kant dae uze thea own haka? at least learn how 2 do it properly. and dae even stole da all blaks haka day had made for them kz ngati toa was trippin ova dm using ka mate. sae wot! disrespectful wat if da maoris started biting off there culture, not even doing it right? would dae appreciate ppl mocking thea culture?

  • shit dude if you gonna make a point atleast type formal.

  • "Colt" on the video said he is getting to grip with the samoan words of the Haka lol, its in Maori not Samoan for goodness sake, such ignorance!

  • like a fruit! lolllllllll

  • Oh man what a disgrace to us islanders....damn[hides face] lol

  • Hide your face anyway LMAOOOOO

  • lol , tell that fob how it is.

  • Even though I play and love AF more than rugby, I still feel its disrepectful for them to do that shit, its just like Americans trying to Americanize things, ya digg!!!

  • tupacamaru2 what a Faggot LMAOOOOOOOO you like rubbin your dick on men? DUDE there are communties out there for you to celebrate your uniqueness lol . GO FIND ONE

  • Mana has nothing to do with it.... they are speaking Maori not Hawaiian...how do you get mana out of speaking someone elses language....... and its IHI they lack...and to be labelled POLY .... HELL NO I call myself Maori because that is who I am.... I refuse to acknowledge Hawaiian, Tahitians, Kuki Ireni, Hamoa, Tonga POLYS... its not who we are

  • We know you cant call your self that, ya stupid vagina, cus ya cant find a full bloodded moari theses days lil bruh. Real moaris will call themselves polys, and trying to create as if theres a great division btween us, but you know damm well history will tell yo ass moaris are polynesians, ya dimmwitts

  • Maori is a word the Pakeha (Palangi) made up for us. I am Ngati Pukenga, my bloodlines are those of my Polynesian brothers and sisters. Those that say they are Maori, buy in to the Pakeha term that they gave us. My blood has sailed the largest ocean on this planet for 3000 years. I am proud to share a noble ancestry like that.

  • the word maori was coined by maori to distnguish themselves as the original people of aotearoa, the settlers term for the maori were aborigines and natives so in my view maori (a term which i use for myself along with nga puhi/kai tahu) is a word of solidarity.

  • YEAH and im TE ARAWA FROM A LONG LINE OF CANABLES !

WHO GIVES if it was for the pakihas who made us a name MAORI . Least we aint eating people right now like those lost people in the jungle who was shooting arrows at a plane.

Its the morioris that bel0ng in Aotearoa and we belong to the bloody bongaz.

But we the beter looking polynesians l0l.

  • That's right,Dragonbitch. I'mma be draggin' my nuts across your face and then nuttin' on it! Get off the Tongan dick....

  • tupacamaru2 The PCC is there quieeerbo. The only thing that lacks MANA is yo dik, you ain't got MANA in yo dik, you a dikless Manaless b1tchless quieerbo. Look I know you're prolly poor trash but theres polys that can afford to travel, Means Polys including Maori ain't just in NZ

  • Bla bla bla... ...I think it`s just cool...

  • gaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!

team unity my ass..load of bitches!! did u cum over to aotearoa and learn that..or jus try copy it of the net..dick heads!!and it maori!shit..that dick who goes "having trouble pronouncing the SAMOAN language?wtf!! aww uze piss us off man!

    mean maori mean!!

  • Actually, when i now watch this clip, the UH players are performing the Kapa O Pango Haka with a contrived intensity. It's like theyre just doing it to look cool and lack any true intensity. The whole spiritual thing that includes the concept of MANA.....

  • What's the problem with the Kapa O Pango Haka? Do people think it's inauthentic? I heard of something about the last part of it where the players run their arms across their throats. I guess culture is always evolving and i see nothing wrong with something new as long as it remains true to the original intent, just in a new interpretation....

  • Yeah,Black culture as it exists in America wasnt shaped in a millenia but it does have certain elements that have. So when you see a person who is not particularly of that history,it's sort of like trying to identify with something that one has had minimal or no contact with. We have that issue with White Americans as well LOL Btw,were you referring to the new Haka or the Ka Mate one? I thought the Ka mate one came from a Maori chief who hid from his enemies in a Kumara storage shed..

  • Haha yeah your right (about the Ka Mate Haka/Kumara storage pit), it's an awesome Haka too. But yeah its the latest Haka (Kapa O Pango) that everybody has a problem with.

You know, its kinda funny, we're both trying to argue the same point from a different angle. Who am I to say that your stand on the B/American culture isn't valid?

Until you've lived it you can never really know? What matters I think is the pride we both have in our respective cultures.

  • Well here in the States, because of the history which encouraged separate racial communities,Black and White culture developed separately. There are many different paradigms within Black culture itself. Hip Hop is but a very recent part of it. But a history of racism, discrimination, mixed with elements of African culture has shaped it.(cont.)

  • iz thur any maoris in that team??

  • Hip hop culture, while less than 50 yrs old,is intertwined with the Black American experience. I saw Maori kids walking around with shirts that said "Compton" on them. WTF? More than half of them probably dont know where Compton is. And speaking the slang and trying to copy the "pimp walk" and other stuff.

  • Haha? What? So some of your culturally sensitive traditions are the "pimp walk and other stuff"? Thats deep man.

And you saw kids walking around with "Compton" on their shirts? Oh. My. God. I know what you mean!

Just the other day I saw this white guy walking around wearing a shirt that said "Idaho"! How culturally insensitive to the "Black American" population there too!

  • Listen man,u have Samoans that were born in New Zealand. Oh,but its ok for them to do the Maori haka simply by default for having been born in NZ?? They arent Maoris. And u have White guys who do the haka. Oh,it's ok for them to do it?

  • I hear you, and this is why it's ok.

This particular Haka was written for the All Blacks (Kapa O Pango) reflecting the cultural diversity of the team. It tells of the team becoming as one people represented through the Black Jersey, the Silver Fern (Ponga Ra) and the Land.

How does the Pimp Walk do the same?

  • While i agree with Anzac regarding Other polynesians copying the Maori Haka,it also irritates me when i saw Maori kids making a mockery of Black American culture. I'm an American and have lived in some rough Black ghettos and i find it deeply offensive when Maori kids walk around with the hip hop swagger and slang. It's not their culture and they arent American.

  • Hey tupacamaru2, I'm sorry, I didn't realise that "Black American's" had a monopoly on rough ghetto's? Do any of them need a sponsor?

Hip Hop and its four elements are not a cultural identity. It's a state of mind. Do you find Eminem equally as offensive? How about Akon?

Or is your judgment solely reserved for Maori?

Stop trying to compare a "Hip Hop Culture" that is barely 50 years old, to an island culture and heritage shaped by almost a millenia.

  • O'h I'm Samoan and born in New Zealand and seeing this shit done by Hula, pineapple eaters,is a joke! Of course theirs Samoans in the All Blacks team. Palagis,Samoans,Tongans, and Fijians, but are also called New Zealanders;proud of their country. United as one. The Kapa O Pango belongs to New Zealand and the All Blacks not for "Fantasy Island" Hawaii--FUCKWIT!!!

  • Haha Oi! What the hell?! Im arguing the Same point as you Anzac?! Lol, scroll back a few pages and you'll see who im directing the comments at.

Haha, stop burning me! Im on your side!

  • Lmao.. dats a good point usouso! Why didnt anyone else pick up on that?! Haha..

  • Hey purplecock. Shut the fuck up dickhead and your intellectual bullshit talking. This is for the New Zealand All Blacks, not for some lame fat Hawaiians who thinks it's cool to use it as their own. Polynesians have many hakas, why don't they use theirs or create something that symbolizes them and their University? All Blacks,Silver Fern, and New Zealand is all about Kapa O Pango. Get that purplehead. Good!

  • yeah its a lil bit stupid if your saying "this defines us as all blacks" and "silver fern"

  • aint anything against the polynesians, im one myself, from new zealand, and just came across this video. You know this is used by the all blacks of new zealand, aint no copyright issue over it either, but i think it is disrespectful to the maoris of new zealand, and havent you guys got anything original, like something of your own?

  • Why is everyone trippin on them doing the haka..it's all in unison dang...it's all about getting along learning eachother's culture and so what if it's the haka...don't hate because there not doing your or our culture...it's alway's got to be about race or who's culture...get with the program...dang...

  • If its Hawaiian and they wanna do it for the polys then why dont they do a Samoan or Tongan type war dance? The haka belongs to New Zealand and The Maori's, not the polys, totally different culture. Thats like saying Americans are like Swedish.

  • why the fuck are these people trying to preform something that doesn't even belong to them. i bet they don't even no what it means. and that white guy saying that his Samoan is getting better, its not even Samoan its Maori you fuck wit

  • I'm dragon and I'm a bitch, just like my mama. i FUCK my mama too....just luv it!!!

  • so what? its a tribute to the all blacks what ever happened to multi cultarlism eh?

  • wow another copyrighted rip off of the New Zealand All Blacks Haka....hawaii does not = Kiwi's stop fuckin taking other culture's haka and make your own...all of you don't even know what the words mean...you fuckers use it for wrong intentions...not supposed to be used as a thing to pump you up...it's for cultural reasons...i just wanna slap every single one of you in the face right now..fuck

  • why does every1 gotta do dat. UH means NO disrespect, almos all of dem isnt hawaiian so doin one hawaiian one is ALMOST, da same, and mos of da polyz on da team is sole or somethin. dey SHOULD, though, make dea own haka and not do da same one as da all blacks. but fo real, deaz no disrespect. Polyzz jus like rep polynesian culture, da haoles and popoloz like do um fo RESPECT it and das why dey ATTEMPT fo do um right. i mean no disrespect by writing dis, too. jus pointin stuff out.

  • Woo I'm was in school yesterday and My Team and my Team The Haka The Other Team got scared I Yelled JAYYGAAA JAYYGAAA GET OUT JAYGA BACKE NOM OAYGA BAKUMUM WHOOO

  • And coming soon!!! The University of Arkansas performs a Zulu Dance followed by the Temptations singing "O Danny boy". All this on St pattys day in Harlem. If your lucky might even see nazis singing "hava nagila" with a Irish Pow wow. God bless the U.S.A!!!

  • This is just appauling seeing these coconuts disrespect our cultutre. I your going to do the haka do it right

  • maybe you guys should compose your own haka because what you guys are saying in maori has nothing to do with hawaii.. you don't have silver ferns on your chest, and you don't wear all black.. talk about cultural insensitivity

  • actually we do wear all blacks on our uniform. but in american sports, you usually have to wear white to designate the road team. but i hear you're saying. our local boys mean no disrespect.

  • Yeah, what he said...except less explicit

  • Are you Hawaians too ashamed to do your Hula or culture? What a pack of misinformed and digustingly pathetic attempt of what we consider a very sacred act! My ancestors would've cut your heads off, bolied and pickled and sucked your eyeballs out for such insult! At least learn to say and do it correctly as whoever is showing you lot, should be given a kick in the ass because it is WRONG!!

  • Ae, tautoko.

  • They don't care if UH do a haka. In fact, more power to them for doing it. They just have a problem with UH doing a haka very similar, if not identical, to the All Blacks Haka. It will be better if UH created a more original war chant.

  • okay seriously idk wtf the big deal is on UH doing this haka, just because it's maori. there is other cultures in hawaii that dance hula or even speak hawaiian and you don't see us complaining about it. seriously get a life and move on.

  • Thats just it jes808. YOU DONT GET IT.

  • I just think that they need to create their own war dance just like countless rugby school teams have come up with their own. And yes their are some white guys in the All Blacks but they are from Aotearoa so their praising their country. I dont really know what ZionLion is talking about. It's their country too ya know.

  • I just think that they need to create their own war dance just like countless rugby school teams have come up with their own. And yes their are some white guys in the All Blacks but they are from Aotearoa so I dont really know what ZionLion is talking about. It's their country too ya know.

  • frickn hell man yes im maori bro born n raisd. we cant b hattin on each other man we all brothers n sisters if u u learn ur history we all were one we shuld being sharing our culture wit the rest of the world not holding it back frm theam. our cuzins in hawaii dnt mean no harm bro they luv our culture just az much az they luv there owen. yes its bade thhat they doing the all blacks haka but but they dnt no ne better so lets stop hattin up in hear ka pai tane gud job kia ora

  • That's a bloody rip-off not to mention disrespectful to the Maori culture. They probably don't even know what their saying or what it means. Don't they have their own Hawaiian or Native American war dance that they can perform? I mean, it's very flattering but don't they know that what their saying pretty much translates to giving thanks to Aotearoa (New Zealand), the All Blacks (NZ rugby team which they copied this from) and also the Silver Fern (native plant of New Zealand).

  • Funny that you pontificate about how UH makes a mockery of the haka by not knowing its meaning (apparently giving thanks to Aoetearoa) when a good percentage of the All Blacks is white, who have a much weaker connection to the Polynesian culture than most of the members of the UH football team. Aloha.

  • Haha, "pontificate"? Using fancy $6.00 words in an attempt to sound like you have a constructive argument "..a good percentage of the All Blacks is white" is lame.

It's what people do when they don't know what they're talking about.

A good % of the team is also, Samoan. Do you see them using the Samoan "Le Manu"? What about the Tongan "Sipi Tau"? No. Tonga, Samoa, Fiji, Tokelau, the Cook Islands all HAVE THEIR OWN HAKA.

Not a $2.50 knock-off of the ALL BLACK Haka.

  • Ripping off the All Blacks haka shows no PRIDE!

  • You fucking dumb islanders, learn your own culture - because they are all the same. Haka is not MAORI - it's polynesian. In fact if you wanna be technical maori was just the fruits that went the wrong way. Where did the maori come from, your culture says "Hawa Iki" - what does that sound like?

  • i was told maoris where the island rejects?

  • silver and black ah? thats the UH WARRIORS away uniforms colors. there you go KAPA O PANGO

  • Just watched the clip after replying to comments and I'm not sure whether UH r just pronouncn the words so poorly that it sounds Hamo or if it actually is a Hamo performance. It's likely Hamo have their own war dance (being a warrior people) but I'm not sure. I definately know that my people on Niue have haka but Hamo haka or Maori haka its still inappropriate for UH to be going about performn/constructn opinions re: what its about w/o tutelage from a learned Maori or Hamo.

  • Maorig,kai292 &avenger, guess u guys have nothing better to do then bring down another culture.. Hawaiian, Samoan, Maori ..we are all the same.."Us" as Polynesians should show more PRIDE than trying to bring down another Polynesian race. THE ALL BLACK are proud that other teams inmitate their unity and PRIDE!

  • Don't begin to assume you know what the All Blacks think and I am physically sick of hearing the phrase "The All Black Haka". They may perform it and well at that but credit must be given to the Iwi/Hapu/Whanau whose tale it relates. Hyneyez...the idiom "the oppressed in turn oppress" comes to mind when hearing your korero. Quit bullying your kinsman avenger and see cultural insensitivity for what it is

  • Geez Gulando, dont assume to know what i know or who i know. ur korero appears a little bullish to me. point taken. avenger -Kala mai ia'u.

  • I'm Hawaiian like it says in my post... I hope you don't think Hawaiians danced around like a bunch of queers in ancient times - like they do nowadays. No, the men did something similar to the haka. Ancient Hawaiian culture is dead - replaced by some bs crap made for tourists. I'm bringing down ignorant haole not polynesians.

  • eh avenger, did it sound like i was bullying u, as Gulando said? Kala mai ia'u. I agree w/ some of your post above, but our Hawaiian culture is not dead.. not as long a you and I are alive to say we're HAWAIIAN. As long as I can kukui ōlelo hea inoa o keiki. My culture lives. again, Kala mai ia'u. Aloha.

  • boii it is biting...that haka is MAORI...not hawaiin, juss stick 2 ur own culture...and tell them thats its maori not samoan..

  • haha for real... haka is maori not samoan. I'm Hawaiian, our ancient culture is pretty much lost... all we've got are our pufta dances that were designed to impress the damn tourist. Anyway, colt is an idiot, the UH team is lame... if someone is going to teach the haka, that person should teach them the history of it as well.

  • maorig kai292 and avenger, So what, For the UH team, the HAKA brings them together, UNITES them..oh and dont forget the HAKA was used to scare the enemy, to make them think that the MAORI people were crazy. why cant u guys just be proud that non-polynesians find "OUR" cultures worth learning about and embracing! eh Avenger, what kine Hawaiian u? u probably one part-haole and didnt get to play with the big boys!

  • Your argument lacks depth and insight Hyneyez. If the UH team want to feel united let them perform something that caters entirely to the needs of the Hawai'ian people and not a performance which is steeped in Maori spirituality. The haka embraces more notions than you could count on both your hands e hoa so do not begin to think you have the knowledge neccesary to reply.

  • Hui Gulando, got time on your hands?

  • Its not biting. Hawaiians and the people of New Zealand both came from the Marquasas at about the same time. How can it be copying when they share similar cultures.

  • He aha? Are you a budding anthropologist that you can make these claims. Saying that the University of Hawai'i has licence to make a mockery of Te Ao Maori because we share similar cultures is like saying Koreans can't steal from the Japanese because they're Asian peoples. I detect elements of the craniometric measurement studies in Australia conducted to support the notion of "one aboriginal people" in your argument Wassupbaby24. I am not in the least bit impressed.

  • Its not biting. Hawaiians and the people of New Zealand both came from the Marquasas at about the same time. How can it be copying when they share similar cultures.

  • thats lame, totally just copying the All Black's haka

dont Hawaiians have their own culture, gotta imitate Maori

  • bite on the ALL BLACKS KAPA O PANGO!!!SO STUPID ITS MAORI NOT SAMOAN...DAMN PALANGIS

  • and why are they using the all blacks haka man...KAPA O PANGO ...Ponga rä!

Kapa o Pango means silver fern team in black...u guys arnt the all blacks mean...juss kip it

  • u fool..its maori not samoan

  • I'm an Alabama fan and I hope they do the Haka! I've always enjoyed watching it.
